Chapter 4: The Name on the Authorization

“According to our records, Mr. James, the person who authorized the transfer of Ariya’s scholarship funds was your wife.””

For a moment, my father didn't speak.

The sunlight pouring through my bedroom windows illuminated every detail of his face: the tightness around his eyes, the rigid line of his jaw, the hand gripping his phone.

Across the room, Vanessa looked as though she'd forgotten how to breathe.

My fingers tightened around the torn pieces of my diploma.

“I'm sorry,” my father finally said to the registrar.

“Did you say my wife authorized a transfer?””

“Yes, sir. The authorization was submitted through the school's financial aid portal. The funds were designated for Ariya's educational expenses.””

“How much money are we talking about?””

The registrar hesitated.

“Approximately forty-eight thousand dollars, including the scholarship disbursements and the education reserve associated with her student account.””

My knees nearly buckled.

Forty-eight thousand dollars.

I'd spent months working extra shifts because I thought my scholarship wouldn't cover all my expenses. I'd bought secondhand textbooks, skipped meals between classes, and declined a spring internship because I couldn't afford the transportation.

All that time, money intended for my education might have been sitting somewhere I didn't know about.

My father slowly turned toward Vanessa.

“Did you transfer forty-eight thousand dollars out of Ariya's scholarship account?””

Vanessa shook her head violently.

“No. Absolutely not. This is a misunderstanding.””

The registrar was still speaking through the phone.

“Mr. James, we have temporarily frozen the disputed transaction pending verification. However, the destination account is not registered under the student's name.””

My father closed his eyes for one brief second.

“Whose name is on it?””

“I can confirm that the account information is part of the financial review. We'll need the account holder's authorization before releasing certain details.””

“I'm her father.””

“Yes, sir. We understand. We'll need to verify the relevant documents before disclosing the full account information.””

Vanessa seized the opportunity.

“See?”” she said quickly.

“They don't even know what they're talking about. Someone entered incorrect information, and now you're accusing me of stealing from your daughter.””

My father raised his phone slightly.

“I'm not accusing you of anything. I'm asking you to explain why your name is attached to a transfer you say you never authorized.””

“I manage our household finances. My name is on hundreds of documents.””

“Then this should be easy to explain.””

She stared at him.

For once, there was no immediate comeback.

I moved toward the bed and sat down, placing the torn diploma on my lap.

“Dad, I never received forty-eight thousand dollars.””

His expression softened when he looked at me.

“I know, sweetheart.””

“No, you don't understand.”” My voice shook.

“I asked Vanessa for help buying my laptop last semester. She told me I was old enough to handle my own problems. I worked extra hours because I thought we couldn't afford it.””

Vanessa's face tightened.

“You have a perfectly good laptop.””

“It kept shutting down during exams.””

“Then you should have taken better care of it.””

My father turned toward her so sharply that she stopped talking.

“Enough.””

The single word silenced the room.

He returned to the call.

“Please preserve every document connected to this transaction. Don't delete anything. Send the verification request to my email, and tell me exactly what I need to do to protect my daughter's records.””

“Of course, Mr. James. We'll send the instructions shortly.””

“And one more thing. Has anyone requested a change to Ariya's graduation status?””

The registrar paused.

“Yes, sir.””

My stomach dropped.

“What change?”” I whispered.

My father held up a finger, asking me to wait.

The registrar continued.

“An administrative inquiry was submitted earlier this week questioning whether Ariya had fulfilled the requirements for her graduation honors. The inquiry included a request to review her final academic documentation.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She immediately looked away.

My father noticed.

“Who submitted that inquiry?””

“I can't disclose the individual's identity until we complete our verification process, but I can tell you that the request was submitted using credentials associated with a family contact.””

“Was it my wife?””

“I cannot confirm that at this stage.””

My father thanked her and ended the call.

The silence that followed felt heavier than anything Vanessa had said to me.

He placed his phone on the dresser and turned toward her.

“You told me Ariya was becoming irresponsible. You told me she was wasting opportunities. You told me she didn't deserve the attention she was getting.””

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“Because I was concerned about her future.””

“Then why is her scholarship money missing?””

“It's not missing!””

“Where is it?””

She opened her mouth, but nothing came out.

My father stepped closer.

“Where is the money, Vanessa?””

She looked at me, and the expression in her eyes frightened me more than her shouting ever had.

“You have no idea what your daughter has put this family through.””

I rose from the bed.

“What did I do?””

“You think everything should be handed to you because you got good grades.””

“I earned that scholarship!””

“You got opportunities because your father paid for everything!””

“I worked for it!””

“Stop screaming at me!””

Vanessa's voice cracked through the room.

My father moved between us.

“You don't get to destroy her achievement and then demand that she remain quiet.””

Vanessa's breathing grew uneven.

Then she looked toward the closet, where her expensive dinner gown lay crumpled on the floor.

“You're choosing her over me.””

My father didn't hesitate.

“I'm choosing the truth.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You promised we'd be a family.””

“We are a family. That's why this is so serious.””

She laughed bitterly.

“No. We're a family when Ariya gets what she wants. When Kayla needs something, suddenly there are conditions.””

Kayla, who had remained silent near the door, finally spoke.

“Mom, please stop.””

Vanessa turned on her.

“You stay out of this.””

“But you told me—”

“Kayla!””

My stepsister fell silent.

My father slowly turned toward her.

“What did your mother tell you?””

Kayla's face lost its color.

“Nothing.””

“Then why did you just say that?””

She glanced at Vanessa, then at me.

“I don't want to be involved.””

My father nodded once.

“That's your choice. But if you know where Ariya's money went, keeping it secret won't protect you.””

Kayla's eyes filled with tears.

Vanessa rushed toward her.

“Don't you dare let him frighten you.””

My father stepped into her path.

“I'm not frightening anyone. I'm giving her a chance to tell the truth.””

Kayla pressed her back against the wall.

“I didn't take the money,” she whispered.

I stared at her.

Nobody had accused her of taking it.

My father heard the distinction, too.

He lowered his voice.

“Kayla, nobody said you took anything. But you seem to know more than you're telling us.””

She shook her head.

“I can't.””

“Can't, or won't?””

Her gaze dropped to the floor.

Then she looked at me.

For one second, I saw something behind her usual smug expression. Something that looked almost like shame.

“Ariya,” she whispered, “I'm sorry.””

Vanessa lunged toward her.

“Don't say another word!””

Kayla flinched.

My father grabbed his phone from the dresser.

“That's enough. I'm contacting the bank and our attorney. Nobody is deleting messages, changing passwords, or moving any money until we know what happened.””

Vanessa's lips parted.

“You wouldn't do that to me.””

He looked at her steadily.

“I wouldn't have to if you had simply told the truth.””

Then Kayla's phone vibrated.

She looked at the screen.

Her expression changed instantly.

My father noticed.

“Who is messaging you?””

Kayla tried to hide the phone behind her back.

But I had already seen the name displayed across the screen.

*MOM.*

And beneath it, the message preview read:

*Don't tell them what happened to the original documents.*

My father held out his hand.

“Kayla, give me your phone.””

She stared at him, trembling.

Then she whispered the words that made my blood run cold.

“Dad, the money isn't the worst part.””

And before anyone could ask what she meant, she opened her messages and turned the screen toward us.

There were twenty-three messages from Vanessa.

The oldest was dated three months earlier.

And the first sentence read:

*If Ariya discovers what we did before graduation, we're finished.*
