Chapter 12 - THE FOUNDATION'S FUTURE

Five years passed.
The foundation became one of the largest children's health organizations in the country.
Charlotte became head of research funding.
Arthur retired from active business.
My mother lived quietly.
I became chairwoman.
But I refused to call myself an owner.
The foundation didn't belong to me.
It belonged to everyone it helped.
One afternoon, a little girl visited our headquarters.
She had survived a rare illness after receiving treatment at one of our centers.
Her mother brought her to meet me.
The girl handed me a small drawing.
It showed a hospital.
A woman.
And hundreds of stars.
“This is for you,” she said.
I smiled.
“Why?”
“Because you helped save me.”
I looked at the drawing.
“No.”
I handed it back.
“Doctors saved you.”
She shook her head.
“You paid them.”
I laughed.
“Fair enough.”
She hugged me.
And I realized that this was the inheritance my father had wanted.
Not money.
May you like
Not control.
A future.
