Chapter 7 - WHAT WAS BENEATH THE FOUNDATION

We discovered the answer beneath the original foundation building.
There was an underground archive.
My father had built it decades earlier.
Inside were boxes.
Maps.
Property deeds.
Photographs.
And one enormous ledger.
The ledger contained the history of the Monroe family.
The foundation owned land across the city.
Hospitals.
Clinics.
Research centers.
Schools.
But beneath those properties were mineral rights and development rights worth billions.
Victor hadn't wanted the charity.
He wanted the land.
He wanted to sell the properties to developers.
My father had stopped him.
That was the real reason he was targeted.
I turned to Arthur.
“Why didn't Dad sell?”
Arthur smiled.
“Because your father believed some things shouldn't be measured in money.”
Charlotte touched the ledger.
“He protected all of this.”
“Yes.”
Then we found something unexpected.
A page listing future beneficiaries.
Not people.
Projects.
Children's hospitals.
Scholarship funds.
Research centers.
Emergency housing.
My father had planned everything.
The wealth wasn't meant to create rich heirs.
It was meant to create opportunities.
I started crying.
He had known.
He had always known what the family would become.
He had built a way to stop it.
That evening, I stood outside the hospital my foundation had funded.
Children were walking through the doors.
Parents carried babies.
Doctors hurried down hallways.
I watched them.
This was what my father had wanted.
Not mansions.
Not yachts.
Not power.
Lives saved.
Arthur stood beside me.
“You understand now?”
“Yes.”
“What?”
“My father didn't leave me a fortune.”
He smiled.
“He left you a responsibility.”
I nodded.
Then Charlotte took my hand.
“We can do it together.”
I looked at her.
My sister.
The family secret I never knew I had.
May you like
I smiled.
“Yes.”
