Chapter 5: The Name on the Secret File
The words didn’t make sense.
Not at first.
My name.
My account.
My authorization.
It felt like someone had thrown a glass against the wall and expected me to understand the sound of it breaking.
“What?””
The question came out as a whisper.
Richard Hale looked at his phone again, as if reading it a second time would somehow change the answer.
“It says the request came from an employee profile registered under Maya Brooks.””
I shook my head immediately.
“No.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Maya, listen to me.””
“No.””
I looked around the table.
“No, I didn’t do that.””
Nobody accused me.
Nobody had to.
The suspicion itself was enough.
It was the same feeling I had known my whole life.
Standing in a room full of people who knew something I didn’t.
Being the last person to learn the truth about myself.
“I don’t even have access to that kind of system,” I said.
Richard nodded.
“I know.””
“Then how?””
Thomas Reed, the security director, moved closer.
“We need to check the logs.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Not here.””
Thomas looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because whoever used her account wants us to react.””
Silence followed.
Daniel looked at me.
“They wanted her name attached to this.””
My heart pounded.
“Why?””
He didn’t answer.
And that scared me more than anything.
Because I was beginning to understand something.
The truth wasn’t hidden because it was old.
It was hidden because someone was still protecting it.
Or protecting themselves.
Richard gestured toward a private conference room near the executive offices.
“We move now.””
Derek Collins, who had been standing several feet away watching everything unfold, suddenly spoke.
“Wait.””
Everyone turned.
His face had changed.
The arrogance was gone.
“I need to say something.””
I looked at him.
“About what?””
He hesitated.
For the first time since I met him, Derek looked nervous.
“This morning…”
He glanced around.
“I saw someone near Terminal C.””
Thomas narrowed his eyes.
“Who?””
Derek swallowed.
“I don’t know.””
“That’s not helpful.””
“I know.””
His voice became quieter.
“But they were asking about Maya.””
My body went still.
“What?””
Derek looked at me.
“They knew your name.””
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
“What did they look like?””
Derek looked uncomfortable.
“Male. Late forties, maybe early fifties. Dark jacket. He wasn’t dressed like a passenger.””
“Did you speak to him?””
“No.””
“Then how do you know he was asking about her?””
Derek looked down.
“Because he showed me her employee picture.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
Derek rubbed his forehead.
“He asked, ‘Is Maya Brooks working today?’”
Daniel’s face became unreadable.
“What did you tell him?””
Derek didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
My voice became cold.
“You told him.””
Derek looked at me.
“I didn’t think anything of it.””
“You gave a stranger information about me.””
“I thought he was family or someone who knew you.””
“Why?””
Derek looked away.
“Because he knew your full name.””
I laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because I couldn’t believe this was my life.
A few hours ago, I was cleaning floors.
Now my father was alive, my mother’s death might have been a murder, and strangers were using my identity to unlock secret files.
Richard opened the conference room door.
“Everyone inside.””
Derek started to follow.
Thomas stopped him.
“You stay here.””
Derek looked offended.
“I work here.””
“You are not part of this investigation.””
Derek glanced at me.
For a moment, I saw something on his face.
Guilt.
Real guilt.
But it didn’t erase what happened.
I walked away.
Inside the conference room, the blinds were closed.
For the first time all morning, I wasn’t surrounded by hundreds of strangers.
Only people connected to my past.
Which somehow felt worse.
Thomas opened a laptop.
“We need to determine how someone accessed the system.””
Richard nodded.
“Start with the account.””
Thomas typed quickly.
The screen filled with security records.
My name appeared.
Maya Brooks.
Access granted.
Time: 8:42 a.m.
I stared.
“That’s impossible.””
Thomas continued scrolling.
“There was a physical login.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means someone didn’t just steal your password.””
My throat tightened.
“They used my badge?””
Thomas shook his head.
“No.””
He turned the laptop toward us.
“They used your biometric profile.””
The room went silent.
I frowned.
“My what?””
“Brookfield uses identity verification for restricted systems. Fingerprint, employee credentials, and facial confirmation.””
I stared at him.
“That’s impossible.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Why?””
“Because I’ve never accessed those systems.””
Thomas looked serious.
“That’s the problem.””
He pointed at the screen.
“The system believes you did.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Someone copied my identity.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Samuel quietly said:
“Not copied.””
Everyone looked at him.
Samuel’s face was pale.
“Recreated.””
Daniel turned.
“What do you mean?””
Samuel looked at me.
“When Elena was alive, she was working on something.””
“What?””
He hesitated.
“Identity protection technology.””
Richard frowned.
“Mr. Brooks…”
Samuel ignored him.
“She believed criminals would eventually find ways to manipulate digital identities.””
My eyes narrowed.
“And?””
Samuel looked at the laptop.
“And she created a system designed to prove who someone really was.””
I felt a strange connection forming.
My mother.
The airport.
My stolen identity.
“Why would someone use it on me?””
Samuel didn’t answer.
Daniel did.
“Because you are the key.””
I looked at him.
“To what?””
Before he could respond, Thomas suddenly stopped typing.
His expression changed.
“What?””
Richard noticed.
“What did you find?””
Thomas leaned closer to the screen.
“There’s another file attached to the access request.””
“What file?””
Thomas clicked it.
A document opened.
At the top was a name.
Not mine.
Not Daniel’s.
Elena Brooks.
My mother.
The file was dated twenty-two years ago.
I stepped closer.
“What is it?””
Thomas scrolled.
“It’s a recording transcript.””
“From what?””
He looked at me.
“An interview.””
“With who?””
Thomas’s face became serious.
“With Elena Brooks.””
My breath caught.
My mother.
A recording.
After twenty-two years.
I reached toward the screen.
“Play it.””
Richard looked uncertain.
“Maya, are you sure?””
“Yes.””
My voice didn’t shake.
“I need to hear her.””
Thomas connected the audio.
Static filled the room.
Then a woman’s voice came through.
A voice I hadn’t heard in twenty-two years.
But one I knew instantly.
My mother.
“Elena Brooks speaking. Date: March 14th.””
My hand covered my mouth.
Tears filled my eyes.
She sounded exactly the way I remembered.
Warm.
Gentle.
Alive.
The recording continued.
“If this message is being played, it means someone has found Maya.””
Everyone became still.
My mother knew.
She knew this moment would happen.
Her voice trembled slightly.
“I need whoever is listening to understand one thing.””
A pause.
Then:
“Maya was never the target.””
I looked at Daniel.
He looked confused.
The recording continued.
“The target was always the person who would protect her.””
The room went silent.
Then my mother said something that made Daniel suddenly stand.
“Because the person who betrayed us was someone we trusted completely.””
A sharp breath escaped Samuel.
The recording continued.
“I am leaving this message because I don’t know who will survive.””
My heart raced.
“And if Maya ever hears this…”
Another pause.
Then my mother spoke the words that shattered everything I believed.
“Your father did not abandon you.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“He saved you.””
I looked at him.
Then the recording continued.
“But there is one person you must never trust.””
Static crackled.
Thomas tried adjusting the audio.
The final sentence came through faintly.
Barely audible.
But clear enough.
“Because the person who destroyed our family…”
The recording cut.
Everyone froze.
Thomas stared at the screen.
“The file was corrupted.””
“No,” Daniel whispered.
He wasn’t looking at the computer.
He was looking at me.
Because he knew.
He knew what my mother was about to say.
“What?””
Daniel’s face turned pale.
“Maya…”
“What was she going to say?””
He didn’t answer.
Samuel did.
And his voice broke.
“She was going to name the person.””
The lights in the conference room suddenly flickered.
Then every screen went black.
Thomas immediately stood.
“What happened?””
A second later, the emergency system activated.
A message appeared on the dark monitor.
One sentence.
Written in red.
*STOP SEARCHING FOR THE TRUTH, MAYA.*
Underneath it was a name.
A name I recognized.
May you like
A name that made my blood run cold.
*— Elena Brooks*.
