Chapter 9: The Sister Hidden From the World
The screen stayed black.
But the message remained burned into my mind.
*SUBJECT TWO: LILY BROOKS.*
I read it again.
And again.
As if the letters would rearrange themselves into something that made sense.
They didn’t.
Because there was only one thing I understood.
There was someone else.
Someone who shared my parents.
Someone who had existed before I ever knew there was a missing part of my family.
I looked at my mother.
“Who is Lily?””
Elena didn’t answer.
That scared me more than anything.
Because my mother had survived twenty-two years of hiding.
She had faced the person who destroyed our family.
She had walked into a room full of secrets.
But now she looked terrified.
“Mom.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Maya…”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“Don’t do this.””
She flinched.
“Don’t look at me like everyone else has.””
I shook my head.
“Then tell me the truth.””
Daniel looked at Elena.
“Tell her.””
Elena closed her eyes.
For a moment, she looked exhausted.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like she had carried this one secret longer than all the others combined.
“Lily was your sister.””
The words were quiet.
But they changed everything.
My knees weakened.
“My sister?””
Elena nodded.
“She was born three years before you.””
I stared.
Three years.
There had been another child.
Another little girl.
Another person who should have been in my life.
“Where is she?””
Nobody answered.
My heart started beating faster.
“Where is she?””
Elena looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“We don’t know.””
The answer felt impossible.
“How can you not know?””
Elena’s eyes filled.
“Because Victor took her.””
The room became silent.
I looked at Daniel.
He looked broken.
“What?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Lily disappeared before you were born.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
He looked down.
“She was the reason we knew Victor was dangerous.””
I stared at him.
“Explain.””
Daniel sat down slowly.
The confidence I had seen earlier was gone.
The protective father.
The man who had spent years searching.
He looked like someone reliving the worst day of his life.
“When Lily was three years old, Victor started spending more time around our family.””
Elena nodded.
“He told us he wanted to help.””
Her voice became bitter.
“He said he wanted to be the uncle who was always there.””
I looked at the photograph.
The same man standing beside my family.
Smiling.
Pretending.
“We trusted him.””
Daniel continued.
“One night, Lily disappeared from our home.””
My breath caught.
“What did the police say?””
Daniel laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was painful.
“They said there was no evidence.””
Elena looked away.
“Victor had already planned everything.””
I frowned.
“How?””
“He made it look like we were unstable parents.””
“What?””
“He created records. False reports. Fake concerns.””
My hands tightened.
“He made people believe you couldn’t be trusted.””
Daniel nodded.
“By the time we realized what was happening, Lily was gone.””
“And then?””
Elena looked at me.
“Then we found out why.””
The room waited.
“Victor wasn’t trying to hurt Lily.””
I frowned.
“Then what was he doing?””
Elena whispered:
“He was testing his system.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What system?””
“The identity technology.””
Thomas looked confused.
“Are you saying he used Lily as an experiment?””
Elena nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Nobody spoke.
The horror of that sentence filled the room.
My sister wasn’t just missing.
She had been part of someone’s plan.
Someone’s obsession.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Elena looked at me.
“Because when you were born, we were already afraid.””
She reached toward me.
I didn’t move away.
Not because everything was okay.
Because I needed to understand.
“We changed everything.””
Daniel continued.
“Your name. Your records. Your location.””
“Why?””
“Because Victor had already proven he could erase a person.””
The words hurt.
Because I understood now.
My entire life had been built around hiding.
Not because I wasn’t loved.
Because I was.
And someone had wanted to take that away.
I looked at Elena.
“Why did you let me believe I was alone?””
Her face broke.
“I didn’t want you to grow up looking for ghosts.””
I swallowed.
“But I did.””
A tear fell down her cheek.
“I know.””
The room stayed quiet.
Then Richard spoke.
“There’s something we need to consider.””
Everyone looked at him.
“The message from Victor.””
He pointed toward the screen.
“Why reveal Lily now?””
Thomas nodded.
“That’s what I was thinking.””
Daniel stood.
“He wants something.””
Elena’s face changed.
“Yes.””
“What?””
She looked at the door.
“He wants Maya to find her.””
A chill moved through me.
“Why?””
Elena didn’t answer.
Because she didn’t have to.
We all knew.
Because I was the missing piece.
Because Lily was connected to me.
Because Victor had waited twenty-two years.
“He knows where she is.””
Daniel looked at Elena.
“You think she’s alive?””
Elena looked at him.
“I know she is.””
Everyone froze.
“How?””
Elena walked to the old desk.
She opened a drawer.
Inside were dozens of files.
She pulled one out.
The label on it made my heart stop.
LILY BROOKS.
“I found this six months ago.””
Daniel stared.
“You knew?””
“I couldn’t tell you.””
“Why?””
“Because Victor was watching.””
She opened the file.
Inside were photographs.
A young woman.
Maybe in her twenties.
Dark hair.
A familiar smile.
My hands trembled.
“That’s…”
Elena nodded.
“Your sister.””
I touched the photograph.
I didn’t know her.
But somehow, I recognized her.
The shape of her eyes.
The curve of her smile.
A face that belonged to my family.
“Where is she?””
Elena pulled out another document.
“She works at a research company.””
Thomas looked at it.
“Which company?””
Elena handed it over.
His expression changed.
“What?””
Richard looked.
Then went silent.
“What is it?””
Thomas slowly turned the paper around.
The company logo was printed at the top.
A company I recognized.
Because I had seen it on airport documents.
On contracts.
On security reports.
The same organization connected to the fraud investigation Daniel had been working on.
Victor’s work.
Victor’s network.
Victor’s empire.
“She’s been near us the entire time,” Daniel whispered.
Elena nodded.
“But she doesn’t know who she is.””
My chest tightened.
“What?””
“She was raised believing she was someone else.””
The same thing.
The same nightmare.
A stolen identity.
A stolen life.
My sister wasn’t dead.
She wasn’t gone.
She was hidden.
Just like me.
Before anyone could speak, Thomas’s phone buzzed.
He looked at the screen.
Then immediately stood.
“No.””
Richard noticed.
“What happened?””
Thomas looked at me.
“The company where Lily works just reported a security incident.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Is she okay?””
Thomas didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“What happened?”” Elena asked.
Thomas swallowed.
“Someone broke into their system.””
Richard frowned.
“Was anything stolen?””
Thomas looked at the report.
“No.””
“Then what?””
Thomas turned the phone toward us.
The screen showed one message.
A message sent from Lily’s employee account.
But it wasn’t written by Lily.
It was addressed to me.
*MAYA, IF YOU FOUND THIS, HE ALREADY KNOWS.*
My heart stopped.
Then another line appeared.
*DO NOT TRUST THE MAN WHO SAVED YOU.*
I looked up.
Daniel.
Everyone looked at Daniel.
His face went pale.
“What?””
A final message loaded.
The sender’s name appeared.
*LILY BROOKS.*
