Chapter 7: The Secret Evelyn Carried
The gun was pointed toward the floor.
But nobody cared.
Because the person holding it was the last person anyone expected.
Evelyn.
The old woman who had begged for leftovers.
The grandmother who had trembled when she asked for help.
The woman who had looked at Jay like he was the only thing keeping her alive.
Marcus stared at her.
His mind refused to accept what his eyes were seeing.
“Evelyn.””
Her hand shook.
Not from weakness.
From fear.
“Marcus…”
He looked past her.
The kitchen doorway was empty.
Jay was gone.
His voice became dangerously quiet.
“Where is he?””
Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Where is Jay?””
Isaiah moved beside him.
“Marcus, wait.””
Marcus turned.
“No.””
His eyes never left Evelyn.
“Not this time.””
The words hurt.
Because Isaiah knew exactly what Marcus meant.
Too many secrets.
Too many people making decisions for him.
Too many years stolen.
Marcus looked back at Evelyn.
“You knew.””
The old woman lowered the gun.
“I was trying to protect him.””
Marcus shook his head.
“Everybody says that.””
His voice grew heavier.
“Everybody says they’re protecting someone while they destroy everything around them.””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“I never wanted this.””
Isaiah stepped forward.
“You should have told him.””
Evelyn looked at him.
Her face broke.
“I was afraid.””
Marcus stared.
“Afraid of what?””
She looked at Isaiah.
Then at the empty doorway.
“Afraid that if Marcus knew the truth, he would do exactly what he’s doing now.””
Marcus frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Isaiah answered quietly.
“It means he would come after them.””
Marcus looked at his brother.
“Of course I would.””
Isaiah nodded.
“That’s why I stayed away.””
The words landed harder than Marcus expected.
“You stayed away because you thought I couldn’t handle it?””
Isaiah looked down.
“No.””
A pause.
“I stayed away because I knew you would die trying to save us.””
Marcus went silent.
For a moment, he looked like he wanted to argue.
But he couldn’t.
Because Isaiah knew him.
Better than anyone.
Evelyn slowly walked toward the table.
She placed the gun down.
“I need to tell you everything.””
Marcus didn’t answer.
But he listened.
And Evelyn knew that was the only chance she had.
“Twenty years ago, when Isaiah disappeared, Clara was already being watched.””
Marcus’s eyes softened slightly at the mention of her.
Evelyn noticed.
“She knew something was wrong.””
Isaiah looked away.
“She found records.””
“About the Viper Circle?”” Marcus asked.
Evelyn nodded.
“But not just them.””
The room became quiet.
“Clara discovered someone inside your organization was helping them.””
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“Black Ridge.””
Evelyn nodded.
“But she didn’t know who.””
Marcus looked at Darius.
Then Ray.
Then the other bikers.
Everyone looked uncomfortable.
Everyone had questions.
Evelyn continued.
“After the crash, Isaiah survived. But he knew they would come after Jay.””
Marcus looked toward the kitchen.
“Where is my nephew?””
Evelyn’s face changed.
“He’s safe.””
“Where?””
She hesitated.
Marcus’s patience disappeared.
“Evelyn.””
“He’s with Clara’s sister.””
Marcus froze.
“Clara had a sister?””
Evelyn nodded.
“An older sister.””
“Why didn’t I know?””
“Because nobody was supposed to know.””
Marcus looked at Isaiah.
His brother looked away.
The betrayal was visible.
“You knew.””
Isaiah nodded.
“Yes.””
Marcus laughed quietly.
“Of course.””
He stepped back.
“You all knew.””
Isaiah moved closer.
“Marcus.””
“No.””
His voice broke.
“You don’t get to say my name like everything is okay.””
Isaiah stopped.
Marcus looked at him.
“You were alive.””
The words came out softer.
“You were alive all these years.””
Isaiah looked down.
“Yes.””
“And I was mourning you.””
Isaiah swallowed.
“I know.””
“No.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You don’t.””
His voice cracked.
“You don’t know what it feels like to lose someone who is still breathing.””
Nobody spoke.
Because nobody could.
Isaiah looked like he wanted to reach for his brother.
But he didn’t.
He knew he had no right.
Finally, Marcus asked the question that had been burning inside him.
“Why now?””
Isaiah looked at him.
“Because they found Jay.””
Marcus looked around.
“At the diner?””
Isaiah nodded.
“They knew you would help him.””
Marcus frowned.
“How?””
Isaiah looked toward the broken window.
“Because they know everything.””
A cold feeling moved through Marcus.
“Everything?””
Isaiah nodded.
“Your routines.””
“Your people.””
“Your businesses.””
“Your club.””
Marcus’s eyes narrowed.
“Who is feeding them information?””
Isaiah didn’t answer.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Who?””
Isaiah looked at Darius.
Then at Ray.
Then away.
Marcus noticed.
“You know.””
Isaiah sighed.
“I know who started it.””
The entire room froze.
“Who?””
Isaiah looked directly at Marcus.
“The person who taught me how to ride.””
Marcus blinked.
The answer came slowly.
“No.””
Isaiah nodded.
“Yes.””
Marcus’s face changed.
“That’s impossible.””
“I wish it was.””
Marcus looked around the room.
His eyes moved from one face to another.
Then stopped.
Because there was one person missing.
One person who had been with them earlier.
One person who had disappeared during the chaos.
Darius noticed too.
“Where’s Leon?””
Everyone looked around.
Nobody answered.
Marcus’s stomach tightened.
“Find him.””
The bikers moved immediately.
Darius grabbed his phone.
“No signal.””
Ray looked toward the back exit.
“The kitchen door is open.””
Marcus walked toward it.
Slowly.
Outside, behind the diner, the night air was cold.
Footprints marked the dirt.
Small ones.
A child’s footprints.
And beside them…
A second set.
Adult.
Marcus followed them.
The trail led behind the broken fence.
Then stopped.
On the ground was Jay’s silver bracelet.
Marcus picked it up.
His hand tightened.
Isaiah came beside him.
“He took him.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Who?””
Isaiah’s face became pale.
“Leon.””
The name hung there.
Marcus stared.
“Leon?””
Isaiah nodded.
“He was the one.””
Marcus looked back toward the diner.
The man who joked with them.
The man who sat at their table.
The man who ate beside them.
The man they called brother.
Isaiah continued.
“Leon wasn’t working for the Viper Circle.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Then who?””
Isaiah’s answer came quietly.
“He was working for someone who makes the Viper Circle look small.””
A phone buzzed.
Everyone turned.
Marcus looked down.
The message was from an unknown number.
One photo.
Nothing else.
Marcus opened it.
His face changed.
Because the picture showed Jay.
Alive.
Sitting in the backseat of a car.
And beside him…
Leon.
But the message underneath wasn’t a ransom demand.
It wasn’t a threat.
It was something much worse.
*You wanted the truth, Marcus. Come alone.*
A second message appeared.
*Bring the bracelet.*
Marcus stared at the screen.
Then Isaiah saw the final line.
And his face went completely pale.
May you like
Because the sender had added one more sentence.
*Your brother already failed to save you once. Don’t make him watch it happen again.*
