Chapter 8: The Man Who Owned the Shadows

Marcus stared at the message.

The screen glowed in his massive hand.

One photo.

One sentence.

One threat.

And one name missing from the picture.

His own.

Because whoever took Jay didn’t need to say Marcus was next.

They already knew he would come.

That was the problem.

They knew him.

They knew his heart.

They knew exactly what buttons to push.

Darius stood beside him.

“Don’t go alone.””

Marcus didn’t answer.

“Marcus.””

Still nothing.

Darius stepped in front of him.

“I know what you’re thinking.””

Marcus finally looked up.

“No, you don’t.””

Darius swallowed.

“You’re thinking you can trade yourself for Jay.””

Marcus said nothing.

“That’s what Isaiah would have done.””

The words stopped him.

Only for a second.

But Darius noticed.

Marcus looked away.

“Don’t compare me to him.””

Darius’s voice softened.

“I’m not.””

A pause.

“I’m reminding you that your brother was willing to lose everything for his family.””

Marcus looked down at the bracelet in his hand.

A small piece of silver.

A piece of proof that twenty years of pain had been built on missing information.

Not missing love.

Marcus closed his fist.

“I’m bringing Jay back.””

Isaiah stepped forward.

“No.””

Marcus looked at him.

The anger returned instantly.

“You don’t get to tell me no.””

“I know.””

Isaiah took a breath.

“But I know them.””

Marcus stared.

“Then tell me.””

Isaiah looked toward the dark road.

“The person behind this doesn’t want money.””

“Then what?””

“He wants control.””

Marcus frowned.

“Of what?””

Isaiah looked at him.

“People.””

The answer felt too simple.

Too small.

But Marcus knew better.

The most dangerous people were often the ones who didn’t need obvious things.

Isaiah continued.

“Twenty years ago, Clara found evidence that the Viper Circle wasn’t just moving children.””

Marcus listened.

“They were collecting information.””

“Information?””

“About families.””

Marcus’s expression tightened.

Isaiah nodded.

“They studied people. Their weaknesses. Their connections.””

Darius looked confused.

“Why?””

Isaiah looked at him.

“Because a person’s greatest weakness isn’t fear.””

A pause.

“It’s love.””

Nobody spoke.

Marcus looked at the photo again.

Jay sitting beside Leon.

The boy looked terrified.

But alive.

That was enough.

“We go now.””

Isaiah grabbed his arm.

“Marcus.””

Marcus turned.

“What?””

Isaiah hesitated.

Then said:

“I’m coming with you.””

For a moment, Marcus looked like he might refuse.

Then he looked at his brother.

Really looked.

The scars.

The tired eyes.

The man who had carried twenty years of secrets alone.

“Fine.””

Isaiah nodded.

“But you follow my lead.””

Marcus almost laughed.

After everything, his brother was still trying to give orders.

“You haven’t changed.””

Isaiah gave a faint smile.

“Neither have you.””

It was the first moment that felt like the old days.

Almost.

Then the sound of an approaching vehicle cut through the night.

Everyone turned.

A dark sedan rolled into the parking lot.

The driver’s door opened.

A woman stepped out.

She looked to be in her forties.

Calm.

Well dressed.

Completely out of place.

She walked toward them without fear.

Marcus immediately stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

The woman looked at Isaiah.

Then Marcus.

“My name is Claire.””

Isaiah froze.

Marcus noticed.

“You know her.””

Isaiah didn’t answer.

Claire stopped a few feet away.

“You look exactly like him.””

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

“Like who?””

She looked at him.

“Your father.””

The words changed the atmosphere instantly.

Marcus stared.

“My father?””

Claire nodded.

“He was the first person who tried to expose them.””

Isaiah looked angry.

“Why are you here?””

Claire ignored him.

“Because you’re running toward a trap.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Where is Jay?””

Claire looked at him.

“Alive.””

“That wasn’t my question.””

“I know.””

Marcus’s voice lowered.

“Where is he?””

Claire reached into her coat.

Darius immediately moved.

But Marcus raised a hand.

She pulled out a small envelope.

Not a weapon.

A letter.

She held it toward Isaiah.

“He wanted you to have this.””

Isaiah stared.

“Who?””

Claire looked at Marcus.

“Your father.””

The world seemed to stop.

Marcus didn’t move.

“My father died when I was sixteen.””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then how?””

“Because he left things behind.””

Marcus took the envelope.

The paper looked old.

Very old.

His fingers tightened.

He opened it.

Inside was a handwritten note.

Only a few sentences.

Marcus read silently.

Then his expression changed.

Isaiah watched him.

“What?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Darius looked concerned.

“Marcus.””

Finally, Marcus spoke.

“My father knew.””

Isaiah stepped closer.

“Knew what?””

Marcus handed him the paper.

Isaiah read it.

And his face changed.

Because the letter explained everything.

Their father had discovered the organization years before.

He had tried to stop them.

But he failed.

The final line was what mattered.

*The person who sits beside you may not be your enemy. The person who guides you may not be your friend. Watch the one who believes they own your loyalty.*

Isaiah looked up.

“That’s him.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Who?””

Isaiah’s face hardened.

“The man who created all of this.””

Claire spoke quietly.

“The man who took Jay.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Name.””

She hesitated.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Name.””

Claire looked at Isaiah.

Then finally said:

“Victor Kane.””

The name meant nothing to Marcus.

But Isaiah reacted instantly.

And that reaction was enough.

Marcus noticed.

“You know him.””

Isaiah nodded slowly.

“He was my mentor.””

Silence.

Marcus stared.

“Your mentor?””

Isaiah looked away.

“After the crash, when I couldn’t come home, he was the person who helped me disappear.””

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

“And you trusted him?””

Isaiah’s face filled with regret.

“Yes.””

A pause.

“Until I learned what he really was.””

Marcus looked at the road.

“Where is he?””

Claire answered.

“An abandoned factory outside the city.””

Darius immediately shook his head.

“It’s too easy.””

Everyone looked at him.

Darius continued.

“A man like that doesn’t invite you somewhere unless he already planned every move.””

Marcus nodded.

“Exactly.””

Isaiah looked at him.

“So what do we do?””

Marcus stared into the darkness.

The old Marcus would have charged in.

The angry Marcus would have burned everything down.

But twenty years had taught him something.

Sometimes patience was stronger than force.

“We don’t give him what he wants.””

Claire frowned.

“He wants you emotional.””

Marcus looked at her.

“He wants me alone.””

Isaiah nodded.

“He knows your biggest weakness.””

Marcus looked at the bracelet.

“No.””

He closed his hand around it.

“He thinks he does.””

The group prepared to leave.

But before Marcus climbed onto his motorcycle, his phone buzzed again.

Another message.

This time, no photo.

Only words.

He opened it.

And everyone watched his face change.

Because the message wasn’t from Victor.

It wasn’t from Leon.

It wasn’t from anyone they expected.

It was from Jay.

Three words.

*Don’t trust him.*

Marcus froze.

Isaiah stepped closer.

“Who?””

Marcus slowly turned the phone around.

The message had one more line.

A name.

*Don’t trust my father.*

Everyone looked at Isaiah.

The man who had spent twenty years protecting his son.

The man who had returned from the dead.

The man Marcus had just started to believe again.

Isaiah stared at the screen.

And for the first time all night…

he looked afraid.

May you like

Because Jay wasn’t warning Marcus about Victor Kane.

He was warning him about Isaiah.
