Chapter 10: The Man Behind the Door
My mother's blood was warm against my hands.
“Mom, stay with me.”” I pressed both palms against the wound beneath her collarbone.
“Please. You can't leave me again.””
Her breathing came in shallow, broken gasps. Above us, the red emergency light flashed against the stone walls, turning the cellar into something out of a nightmare.
My father dropped beside us.
“Eleanor, look at me.””
My mother tried to smile.
“Took you long enough, Lorenzo.””
He let out a strangled laugh that sounded dangerously close to a sob.
“I know. I'm sorry.””
Behind them, Isabella stood frozen, her pistol pointed toward the darkness. The gunshot had echoed through the cellar, but I hadn't seen who fired it.
Then a familiar voice emerged from the shadows.
“Such a touching reunion.””
Richard Whitmore stepped into the red light, holding a smoking pistol.
Two men followed him.
But Richard wasn't the person who made my blood run cold.
The old man standing behind him wore a charcoal suit and carried a silver-headed cane. His hair was white, his posture unnaturally straight, and his eyes were the same dark brown as my father's.
I recognized him from the photograph inside the music box.
My grandfather.
Alessandro Valmont.
The man my family had spent decades believing was dead.
He looked down at my mother.
“Eleanor,” he said calmly.
“You should have stayed hidden.””
My father rose slowly.
“You shot her.””
Alessandro tapped his cane against the stone floor.
“She was warned.””
“You shot your own daughter-in-law!””
“She betrayed this family.””
My father moved toward him.
Richard raised his pistol.
“Don't.””
Lorenzo stopped.
Alessandro looked at me, then at Isabella.
“Both granddaughters, finally together. I must admit, I expected a more dignified reunion.””
I pressed harder against my mother's wound.
“Call an ambulance!””
Richard laughed.
“And invite the authorities into a private family matter? I don't think so.””
My mother caught my wrist.
“Evelyn,” she whispered.
“The second ledger.””
I leaned closer.
“What?””
“Vault seventeen. Beneath the floor.””
Her eyes drifted toward Alessandro.
“He doesn't know about the original.””
Alessandro's expression changed.
It was the smallest movement, a tightening around the eyes, but I saw it.
So did Isabella.
She raised her pistol toward him.
“You told me everything in the vault had been destroyed.””
Alessandro smiled.
“Everything that mattered.””
“Then why are you here?””
“Because your father has spent twelve years hiding from consequences. And because your sister has brought us the last piece of the puzzle.””
His gaze settled on the brass key in my hand.
“Give it to me, Evelyn.””
I closed my fist around it.
“No.””
Richard stepped toward me.
“Don't make this difficult.””
“Your father shot my mother.””
“Your mother is alive,” Alessandro interrupted.
“For the moment. That is more than she deserves.””
My father surged forward.
Richard struck him across the face with the pistol.
Lorenzo fell against the wall.
“Stop!”” Isabella shouted.
Her hands shook, but she didn't lower her weapon.
Alessandro regarded her with mild disappointment.
“You have your mother's emotional weaknesses.””
“You told me she was dead.””
“She was supposed to be.””
Isabella's face crumpled.
“You used me.””
“I raised you.””
“You kidnapped me!””
“I rescued you from a father who would have destroyed everything I built.””
“You stole twelve years of my life!””
Alessandro struck the floor with his cane.
“And what have you done with the life I gave you? Spent it chasing ghosts, believing every sob story your mother told you, and threatening the very man who secured your future?””
Isabella stared at him.
For the first time, I saw the little girl beneath her anger.
A child who had been taught to hate the people she wanted to love.
I reached for her hand.
“Isabella, he's lying to you.””
She looked at me.
“Don't tell me what to believe.””
“Then look at him. Ask him why he needed us separated.””
Alessandro smiled.
“Because the trust requires both daughters to stand together before it can be activated. Your grandfather's final act of sentimentality.””
I felt my heart pound.
“You knew about the trust.””
“Of course. I created it.””
“And you couldn't access it because Isabella and I weren't together.””
“Correct.””
Richard shifted uneasily.
“Alessandro, we don't need to discuss the trust here.””
The old man turned toward him.
“Silence.””
For the first time, Richard obeyed without hesitation.
I understood then that the balance of power had never been what I thought.
Richard owned the vineyard.
He controlled the lawyers, the auctions, and the public story.
But Alessandro controlled Richard.
And whatever was inside Vault 17 was valuable enough to frighten them both.
My mother gripped my sleeve.
“Evelyn. Listen.””
I bent toward her.
“The second ledger records every transfer. Every payment. Every name.””
“Where is it?””
“Under the floor. Your father hid it beneath the seventeenth stone.””
Her fingers tightened around mine.
“Don't let them take it.””
Alessandro had heard her.
He looked toward the iron door.
“Richard, retrieve the ledger.””
Richard hesitated.
“And the girls?””
Alessandro's smile returned.
“Bring them upstairs.””
Isabella raised her gun higher.
“Nobody moves.””
One of Richard's men lunged toward her.
She fired.
The bullet struck the stone wall beside his head, sending fragments flying. He ducked with a curse, and my father grabbed the man's arm, twisting it until the pistol clattered to the floor.
Everything erupted at once.
Richard shouted.
Alessandro stumbled backward.
I pulled my mother behind the heavy oak table beside the vault entrance.
Then I heard Isabella scream.
Richard had seized her from behind, his arm locked around her throat.
“Drop it!””
Her pistol fell to the floor.
My father froze.
Richard pressed his weapon against Isabella's temple.
“Now, Lorenzo. Give me the key.””
I looked at the brass key in my hand.
Then at the seventeenth stone beneath the vault's iron threshold.
A plan formed in the space between two heartbeats.
I threw the key.
Not toward Richard.
Toward the open vault.
It struck the stone floor, skidded beneath the iron door, and disappeared into the darkness.
Alessandro's face twisted with rage.
“Fool!””
He shoved past Richard and hurried toward the vault.
That was when the lights went out.
A mechanical alarm began screaming through the cellar.
Red emergency lamps flickered on along the corridor.
And from somewhere behind the stone wall, a woman's recorded voice rang through the speakers.
“If you are hearing this, Alessandro, then you have finally returned to the place where your crimes began.””
My grandfather stopped dead.
The voice continued.
“My name is Eleanor Valmont. This is my final testimony. And the man standing inside Vault 17 is responsible for the murder of Lorenzo Valmont's father.””
My father's face went white.
Alessandro slowly turned toward the hidden speaker.
For the first time that night, he looked afraid.
Then the recording spoke again.
“And if Alessandro is still alive, it means the man we buried twelve years ago was not the only innocent victim of his plan.””
The vault door slammed shut.
Alessandro was trapped inside.
And from the other side of the iron, he began pounding on the door.
Three knocks.
May you like
Then three more.
Exactly as my father had done twelve years earlier.
