Chapter 12: The Brother Who Came Back
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The man standing in the passage wore a dark suit and carried a small leather briefcase. His hair was silver, his face deeply lined, and his eyes were identical to my father's.
But unlike Lorenzo, he had a thin white scar running across his left palm.
The same scar my father had once told me belonged to his older brother.
“Daniel?”” Lorenzo whispered.
The man smiled.
“It's been a long time, little brother.””
My father stared at him as though the dead had walked out of their graves.
“You're alive.””
“Apparently.””
“Where have you been?””
Daniel looked toward the sealed vault.
“Waiting for Father to finish his little performance.””
Alessandro began pounding against the iron door again.
“Daniel! Get me out of here!””
Daniel didn't even look at him.
Instead, he approached the table and picked up the trust agreement.
“Still hiding everything beneath the floor, Lorenzo? You never did learn to trust people.””
My father stepped between him and the documents.
“What are you doing here?””
“Collecting what belongs to me.””
“The vineyard belongs to the trust.””
Daniel smiled.
“That's what the paperwork says.””
“And the paperwork is legitimate.””
“Of course it is. I wrote half of it.””
He opened his briefcase and removed a thick folder.
Inside were original share certificates, bank transfers, and a document bearing Alessandro's signature.
Daniel placed it beside the trust agreement.
“This is the original assignment of controlling shares. Father transferred them to me thirty years ago, before he disappeared.””
My father examined the document.
“Why didn't you come forward?””
“Because I was told you had died.””
“Who told you that?””
Daniel glanced at Richard.
Richard looked away.
Then Daniel answered.
“Your wife.””
I felt the floor shift beneath me.
“My mother?””
Daniel nodded.
“Eleanor contacted me shortly after the fire. She told me Lorenzo had died and that the vineyard had been sold. She begged me to stay away because Richard had threatened to kill both girls if I returned.””
My father looked toward my mother, who lay pale and trembling beside the table.
“Eleanor?””
She struggled to sit up.
“I thought you were dead, too.””
Daniel's expression softened.
“For a while, I was.””
He pulled a chair toward her.
“I spent years living under another name. I had no money, no documents, and no way to prove who I was. By the time I discovered the truth, Richard had already taken control of the estate.””
“Then why didn't you come back?”” I demanded.
Daniel turned toward me.
“Because I learned what your grandfather had done.””
He placed a second document on the table.
It was a bank record showing payments from a Valmont company to a series of offshore accounts. The dates stretched back decades.
“Your grandfather used the vineyard to move money for people who didn't want their names attached to it. Richard handled the auctions. Lorenzo made the wine. I was supposed to manage the business.””
He looked at my father.
“When I discovered the scheme, Father threatened to frame me for embezzlement. I disappeared before he could.””
Alessandro's voice thundered from behind the vault door.
“Lies!””
Daniel ignored him.
“I spent years gathering evidence. I knew the trust would eventually expose everything, but I couldn't activate it without both girls.””
I looked at Isabella.
She had gone pale.
“Then why did Richard tell me my mother was dead?””
Daniel sighed.
“Because he needed you to hate Lorenzo. If you believed your father had abandoned you, you would never help Evelyn reunite with him.””
Isabella's eyes filled with tears.
“He told me Lorenzo killed her.””
“He told you what he needed you to believe.””
She turned away, pressing both hands against her mouth.
My father approached her slowly.
“Isabella.””
She shook her head.
“Don't.””
He stopped.
“I know I failed you.””
“You let me grow up believing you didn't want me.””
“I thought you were dead.””
“You should have looked harder!””
Her voice broke.
My father bowed his head.
“Yes,” he whispered.
“I should have.””
Isabella began to cry.
I moved beside her and took her hand.
For the first time since we'd met, she didn't pull away.
Then Daniel cleared his throat.
“I'm sorry to interrupt the family reunion, but we have a problem.””
He pointed toward the ceiling.
A thin stream of water had begun dripping through the cracked stone.
“The cellar is destabilizing. That remote triggered the emergency demolition system. We need to get out before the remaining supports collapse.””
Richard scrambled to his feet.
“You can't leave me here!””
Daniel regarded him coldly.
“You've spent twelve years leaving everyone else behind.””
“I'm offering you a deal.””
“I'm not interested.””
Richard stepped closer.
“I know where the original hospital records are. I know where Isabella was taken. I know who signed the false adoption papers.””
Daniel stopped.
Richard smiled.
“Without me, you'll never prove what happened to the first daughter.””
Isabella turned toward him.
“What are you talking about?””
Richard looked directly at her.
“Your birth certificate was altered. The woman who raised you after you were taken from the hospital wasn't your adoptive mother.””
My stomach tightened.
“Then who was she?””
Richard smiled.
“Your grandmother.””
Alessandro's pounding stopped.
Even Daniel looked startled.
Richard continued.
“Your grandfather didn't just steal Isabella. He arranged for her to be raised by a woman who would teach her to obey him. He intended to use her as the legal heir while keeping her under his control.””
Isabella stared at the vault door.
“Is that true?””
Alessandro's voice came through the iron.
“You were my granddaughter. I gave you everything.””
“You stole my childhood.””
“I protected you.””
“You stole my mother!””
Alessandro slammed his cane against the metal.
“Enough!””
The force of his voice made the chamber echo.
“You want the truth? Fine. Your mother was never supposed to raise either of you.
Eleanor was a temporary inconvenience. Lorenzo was a weak boy who couldn't accept that the family needed discipline.””
My father stepped toward the door.
“You murdered your own son.””
Alessandro laughed.
“Which one?””
The words froze everyone.
Daniel's face hardened.
“What does that mean?””
Alessandro fell silent.
Then he spoke slowly.
“The man who died in the cellar twelve years ago wasn't a stranger. He wasn't a servant. He wasn't some unfortunate victim of the fire.””
My father gripped the edge of the table.
“Who was he?””
Alessandro's voice became almost gentle.
“Your brother.””
Daniel staggered backward.
“No.””
“You were supposed to inherit everything. But when you disappeared, I needed someone who looked like you. Someone whose death would close the books and eliminate the final obstacle to the trust.””
I stared at Daniel.
Then at Lorenzo.
The family resemblance was suddenly horrifying.
Alessandro continued.
“Your brother returned to the estate the night of the fire. He wanted his shares back. Richard brought him to the cellar, and the argument became violent.””
Daniel's hands began to tremble.
“You killed him.””
“No,” Alessandro said.
“Richard did.””
Richard's smile vanished.
Alessandro's voice sharpened.
“And you helped bury the truth.””
The cellar fell silent except for the dripping water.
My father slowly turned toward Richard.
“You killed Daniel?””
Richard backed away.
“I did what I was told.””
“You killed my brother!””
“He was going to destroy everything!””
Lorenzo lunged.
Daniel caught him before he could reach Richard.
“Not here,” Daniel said.
“Not like this.””
Richard looked toward the exit.
Isabella moved to block it.
“Don't even think about running.””
He raised his hands.
“I can explain.””
“You've had twelve years to explain.””
A heavy crash shook the cellar.
Part of the ceiling collapsed near the passage.
Daniel grabbed the documents.
“We have to go. Now!””
My father lifted my mother into his arms. I took the trust agreement and ledger, while Isabella recovered the pistol from the floor.
We hurried toward the western corridor.
Behind us, Alessandro shouted through the iron door.
“Daniel! You cannot leave me here!””
Daniel stopped at the threshold.
For a moment, I thought he might turn back.
Instead, he looked at the sealed vault and spoke quietly.
“You taught us that family was everything, Father.””
He stepped into the passage.
“You just forgot that we were part of it.””
We reached the outer cellar moments before another section of ceiling collapsed.
Cold night air struck my face.
Sirens wailed somewhere beyond the vineyard gates.
Daniel had contacted the authorities before entering the cellar. He had also sent copies of the ledger to federal investigators, the estate trustee, and three major newspapers.
Richard was arrested before dawn.
Alessandro was pulled from the vault alive, though badly injured.
My mother was rushed to the hospital.
For the first time in twelve years, I believed we might survive the night.
Then a federal agent approached Daniel beside the ambulance.
“Mr. Valmont,” she said, holding a sealed evidence bag.
“We found this in Richard Whitmore's vehicle.””
Inside the bag lay a hospital identification bracelet.
The name printed on it was Isabella Valmont.
But the date of birth was three years earlier than the one on my sister's official records.
Daniel stared at it.
Then he looked at Isabella.
“There's something else you need to know.””
My sister's face drained of color.
Daniel took a breath.
“The woman who gave birth to Isabella wasn't Eleanor.””
He looked at me.
“And the baby Eleanor brought home twelve years ago wasn't the daughter she delivered.””
I couldn't speak.
My mother, pale on the ambulance stretcher, began to cry.
May you like
Then Daniel said the words that shattered the last piece of certainty I had left.
“Evelyn, you and Isabella aren't biological sisters.””
