Chapter 6: The Truth Eleanor Was Afraid to Tell Me
Arthur had prepared himself to hear many things.
That his father had lied.
That his brother had betrayed him.
That his company was built on secrets.
That his entire life had been carefully manipulated by people he trusted.
But one thing he had not prepared for was this:
Eleanor was not hiding from the people who destroyed her.
She was hiding from him.
The words echoed in the archive.
*She’s hiding from you.*
Arthur stared at Ethan.
For the first time in his life, his brother looked afraid.
Not nervous.
Not guilty.
Afraid.
“Explain.””
Ethan didn’t move.
“Arthur—”
“Explain.””
The room felt smaller.
Marcus stood near the door, watching everyone.
Daniel looked ready to speak, but Arthur raised a hand.
“No.””
His eyes stayed on Ethan.
“Not him.””
Arthur’s voice dropped.
“I want to hear it from you.””
Ethan swallowed.
“You don’t understand.””
Arthur laughed quietly.
A bitter sound.
“I’ve spent eleven years not understanding anything.””
He stepped closer.
“My wife disappeared.””
His voice cracked slightly.
“My son grew up without me.””
His eyes hardened.
“And every person around me decided I wasn’t allowed to know why.””
Ethan looked down.
Arthur had never seen that before.
His brother avoiding eye contact.
Not because he was angry.
Because he was ashamed.
“Start talking.””
Ethan took a slow breath.
“After the accident, Eleanor survived.””
Arthur’s jaw tightened.
“I know.””
“No.””
Ethan looked at him.
“You know she survived. You don’t know what happened afterward.””
Arthur said nothing.
Ethan continued.
“When she woke up, she didn’t remember everything.””
The room became silent.
Arthur frowned.
“What?””
“She had injuries. Trauma. She remembered pieces.””
“Pieces?””
“Yes.””
Ethan looked at the floor.
“She remembered the crash. She remembered someone forcing the car off the road. She remembered someone pulling her out.””
Arthur’s expression changed.
“Who?””
Ethan hesitated.
Then looked at Daniel.
“Daniel.””
Arthur turned.
Daniel nodded slowly.
“I found her.””
“You found her?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you bring her to me?””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“Because when I found her, someone was already looking for her.””
“Who?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Ethan did.
“Your father.””
Arthur stared.
“You just said he was trying to help.””
“He was.””
The answer confused him.
Arthur hated that.
“You’re telling me my father was both involved and trying to stop it?””
Ethan nodded.
“Because that’s the truth.””
Arthur looked around the archive.
Everything was becoming more complicated.
More impossible.
“Then tell me the whole truth.””
Ethan was quiet for a moment.
Then he walked toward the table.
“The Vale family foundation was never just a charity.””
Arthur frowned.
“The Orion Project.””
Ethan looked surprised.
“You saw the files.””
“Yes.””
Ethan nodded.
“Orion started as a research program.””
“For what?””
Ethan looked at Leo.
“For identifying inherited medical risks.””
Arthur waited.
“And?””
“And it became something else.””
Daniel spoke quietly.
“They started collecting information.””
Arthur looked at him.
“About people?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Control.””
The word hung in the air.
Ethan continued.
“The people behind Orion realized information was more valuable than money. They collected medical records, family histories, personal weaknesses.””
Arthur’s face darkened.
“That’s insane.””
“No,” Ethan said.
“That’s business.””
Arthur looked at him.
The calmness in his voice was disturbing.
“You knew.””
Ethan looked away.
“I found out later.””
“When?””
“Before Eleanor disappeared.””
Arthur felt anger rising again.
“You knew before she vanished?””
“I knew something was wrong.””
“That’s not an answer.””
Ethan looked at him.
“I was trying to protect you.””
Arthur stepped forward.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
His voice became louder.
“Everyone keeps using those words like they erase everything.””
Ethan didn’t respond.
Arthur pointed toward Leo.
“Look at him.””
Ethan did.
“This boy spent seven years not knowing his father.””
Silence.
Arthur continued.
“He had to walk into a building wearing a torn sweater because the adults around him failed.””
Ethan closed his eyes.
Arthur saw the pain.
But he didn’t care.
Not yet.
“You don’t get to call that protection.””
Ethan nodded slowly.
“You’re right.””
Arthur paused.
The admission surprised him.
Ethan looked at Leo.
“I made choices.””
Leo stared back.
“Bad ones?””
Ethan’s expression broke slightly.
“Yes.””
The child’s answer was simple.
Honest.
Arthur almost forgot how young he was.
Almost.
Then Leo asked:
“Is my mom coming back?””
Nobody answered.
That silence hurt more than any accusation.
Arthur looked at Ethan.
“You know where she is.””
Ethan didn’t deny it.
“Where?””
“I don’t know exactly.””
Arthur’s eyes narrowed.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I know where she was going.””
“Where?””
Ethan looked at the photograph from the box.
The one showing Eleanor alive.
“The old Vale property in Montana.””
Arthur froze.
The cabin.
The place in the photograph.
“Why would she go there?””
“Because that’s where your father hid the original Orion files.””
Arthur stared.
“Original?””
“The copies were destroyed.””
“By who?””
Ethan looked at him.
“By the person who now controls Orion.””
Arthur felt a chill.
“Who?””
Ethan didn’t answer.
Instead, he reached into his coat and removed a phone.
He placed it on the table.
“There’s one message.””
Arthur looked at the screen.
A text.
No name.
Only a number.
*You opened the box.*
Arthur stared.
The message continued.
*Now she knows you found the truth.*
Another message appeared.
Everyone watched the screen.
*She will not come back.*
Arthur’s blood ran cold.
Then another message.
*Because she remembers what you did.*
The room went silent.
Arthur looked at Ethan.
“What does that mean?””
Ethan didn’t answer.
Arthur’s voice sharpened.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Arthur—”
“No.””
He looked at everyone.
“No more secrets.””
Ethan looked exhausted.
“Eleanor doesn’t remember everything from the accident.””
Arthur frowned.
“What are you saying?””
“She remembers seeing someone at the scene.””
“Who?””
Ethan’s eyes met his.
“Someone she believed was you.””
Arthur felt the words hit him.
“No.””
Ethan continued.
“Her memory was damaged. Confused. But she believed you were there.””
Arthur shook his head.
“I wasn’t.””
“I know.””
“But she doesn’t?””
Ethan said nothing.
Arthur felt suddenly cold.
For eleven years, Eleanor had believed something that wasn’t true.
She thought he had betrayed her.
She thought he had been involved.
That was why she stayed away.
That was why she hid Leo.
That was why she never came home.
Arthur looked down at his hands.
Hands that had held her.
Hands that had buried her.
Hands that had spent eleven years waiting for forgiveness from someone who was alive but believed he was her enemy.
“Who was at the crash?”” Arthur whispered.
Daniel answered.
“A person wearing your coat.””
Arthur looked up.
“My coat?””
Daniel nodded.
“The person wanted Eleanor to believe it was you.””
Arthur’s mind raced.
Someone had planned everything.
The crash.
The hospital records.
The funeral.
The disappearance.
And somehow, they had used Arthur’s own image against him.
A loud noise suddenly came from the hallway.
Marcus turned.
“What was that?””
The archive lights flickered again.
Then the emergency system activated.
Red lights flashed.
Marcus checked his radio.
“Security breach.””
Arthur looked at him.
“Where?””
Marcus’s face changed.
“Main entrance.””
“Who?””
Marcus looked toward Leo.
Then slowly said:
“Sir…”
A pause.
“The woman from the security footage.””
Arthur stood.
“Victoria?””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
Arthur waited.
Marcus’s voice lowered.
“It’s Eleanor Vale.””
The room froze.
Arthur couldn’t move.
Couldn’t breathe.
Eleven years.
Eleven years of wondering.
Eleven years of grief.
Eleven years of believing she was gone.
And now—
She was here.
Alive.
But before Arthur could take a single step, Ethan grabbed his arm.
“Arthur.””
He turned.
Ethan’s face was pale.
“Listen to me.””
Arthur pulled away.
“What?””
Ethan looked toward the door.
“If Eleanor came here…”
A pause.
“She didn’t come back because she forgave you.””
Arthur felt his chest tighten.
“Then why?””
May you like
Ethan whispered:
“She came back because someone is trying to kill your son.””
