Chapter 9: The Enemy Who Wore My Face

Arthur had spent his entire life believing he knew himself.

His choices.

His memories.

His values.

The person he was.

But Eleanor’s final word destroyed the last piece of certainty he had left.

“Arthur.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The name hung in the air like a confession.

Arthur stared at her.

Then he shook his head slowly.

“No.””

Eleanor’s eyes filled with sadness.

“I know.””

“No.””

His voice became harder.

“You’re saying I’m behind this?””

“I’m saying they used you.””

“That’s not what you said.””

She stepped closer.

“Arthur, listen to me.””

“No.””

He looked around the room.

At Daniel.

At Marcus.

At Leo.

Everyone was looking at him differently now.

And that hurt more than anything.

Because he had spent eleven years believing he was the victim.

Now he wondered if everyone had been afraid of him.

“What did I do?””

Eleanor’s face broke.

“You didn’t do anything.””

“Then why say my name?””

“Because Orion was never built around your family.””

She paused.

“It was built around you.””

Arthur felt the words settle.

Slowly.

Painfully.

“Explain.””

Daniel walked forward.

“Your grandfather created Orion because he believed the Vale bloodline had something unique.””

Arthur looked at him.

“And?””

“And Richard continued it because he believed you were the next stage.””

Arthur almost laughed.

“The next stage?””

Daniel nodded.

“They studied you from birth.””

A cold feeling moved through Arthur.

“My family studied me?””

“Yes.””

Eleanor looked away.

“I found the files when I was investigating Orion.””

Arthur looked at her.

“What files?””

“Your medical records.””

Arthur froze.

“Mine?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She hesitated.

“Because they weren’t normal records.””

Arthur’s expression hardened.

“What does that mean?””

Eleanor looked at Leo.

Then back at him.

“It means they were looking for something.””

“What?””

Daniel answered.

“Your ability to survive.””

Silence.

Arthur frowned.

“I don’t understand.””

“Your father believed you had a rare genetic trait.””

Arthur shook his head.

“This is insane.””

“I know.””

“But you believed it?””

Eleanor’s eyes filled with tears.

“I believed someone was willing to destroy our family because of it.””

Arthur looked away.

For years, he had fought against the idea that he was special.

He had built his own identity.

His own success.

He had never wanted to be Richard Vale’s son.

Now he discovered that even his own body had been part of a plan.

“What does Leo have to do with this?””

Eleanor’s expression changed.

“Everything.””

Arthur looked at her.

“He’s not an experiment.””

“I know.””

Her voice became firm.

“Never think that.””

She stepped toward him.

“Leo is our son.””

Arthur looked at the boy.

The child who had walked into his office carrying a ring.

The child who had called him dad before he even knew him.

The child who had changed everything.

“But they believe he inherited something from you.””

Arthur’s jaw tightened.

“And they want him.””

“Yes.””

A message suddenly appeared on Marcus’s tablet.

Everyone turned.

Marcus read it.

Then his face went pale.

“What?””

Arthur looked at him.

“Speak.””

“It’s from Ethan.””

“Where is he?””

Marcus hesitated.

“He’s still in the parking garage.””

“And?””

“He wants to speak with you.””

Arthur looked toward the elevator.

Eleanor grabbed his arm.

“Don’t go alone.””

Arthur looked at her hand.

Then at her face.

For a moment, he saw the woman he had lost.

Not the mystery.

Not the secret.

Just Eleanor.

The woman who loved him.

The woman who had been afraid.

He nodded.

“Together.””

The parking garage was colder than Arthur remembered.

The lights flickered above them.

The entire building felt abandoned.

Like everyone had already left.

Marcus moved ahead with security.

Arthur stayed beside Eleanor and Leo.

Daniel followed behind.

When the elevator doors opened, Arthur saw them.

Ethan.

And Richard.

His father.

Alive.

Older.

But unmistakable.

Richard Vale looked exactly like the memories Arthur tried to forget.

A powerful man.

A controlled man.

A man who never apologized.

Ethan looked different.

Tired.

Broken.

Like someone who had spent years carrying a secret too heavy to hold.

Richard looked at Arthur.

“My son.””

Arthur stopped.

He hated that those words still affected him.

“Don’t.””

Richard’s expression changed slightly.

“You’re angry.””

“You disappeared.””

Richard looked away.

“Yes.””

“You let me bury you.””

“Yes.””

“You let me believe Eleanor was dead.””

Richard closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

Arthur stepped forward.

“Why?””

Richard looked at him.

“Because I was trying to keep you alive.””

Arthur laughed.

Everyone said the same thing.

Everyone had an excuse.

“You all use that sentence.””

Richard’s expression hardened.

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

Arthur shook his head.

“People who love someone don’t destroy their life and call it protection.””

Richard looked at Leo.

“You have no idea what I prevented.””

Arthur moved instantly.

He stepped between them.

“Don’t look at him.””

Richard studied him.

“That’s exactly why they chose you.””

Arthur frowned.

“Who?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked at Eleanor.

“You told him.””

Eleanor’s voice was cold.

“He deserved the truth.””

Richard sighed.

“No.””

He looked at Arthur.

“He deserved a chance to live without it.””

Arthur stared.

“What are you talking about?””

Richard reached into his coat.

He removed a small device.

Marcus immediately raised his weapon.

Richard ignored him.

“Do you know why Orion survived all these years?””

Arthur said nothing.

“Because everyone thought it was about money.””

Richard held up the device.

“It wasn’t.””

A pause.

“It was about identity.””

Arthur frowned.

Richard continued.

“They created a system.””

“What system?””

“A way to predict human behavior.””

Daniel spoke quietly.

“Using genetic data and psychological patterns.””

Richard nodded.

“Yes.””

Arthur looked disgusted.

“You turned people into calculations.””

“No.””

Richard looked at him.

“They turned themselves into calculations.””

Arthur froze.

The wording bothered him.

“They?””

Richard looked toward Ethan.

Then Eleanor.

Then Arthur.

“Because Orion wasn’t controlled by one person.””

A pause.

“It was controlled by a board.””

Arthur felt cold.

“A board?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Richard looked at him.

“People you trust.””

Arthur’s stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Richard pressed the device.

A screen appeared on the wall behind him.

A list.

Names.

Executives.

Investors.

Family members.

Arthur scanned the list.

Then stopped.

Because one name was highlighted.

A name he knew.

A name that had been in every major decision of his company.

A name he had defended publicly.

A name he had invited into his home.

The name at the top of Orion’s leadership list.

*Arthur Vale.*

His own name.

The world went silent.

“No.””

Richard looked at him.

“That’s what I said.””

Arthur stared.

“I’m not part of this.””

“I know.””

“Then why is my name there?””

Richard looked at Eleanor.

“Because they built the entire operation around making you believe you were in control.””

Arthur looked at the list.

Every decision.

Every acquisition.

Every major move in his company.

Had he been manipulated?

Had his choices been guided?

Had he spent his life building something he didn’t understand?

Eleanor stepped closer.

“Arthur.””

He looked at her.

“I don’t remember.””

Her expression softened.

“I know.””

“What does that mean?””

Richard answered.

“They altered your memories.””

Arthur stared.

The words were impossible.

“No.””

“They didn’t erase everything.””

Richard stepped closer.

“They only removed what they needed.””

Arthur looked at Ethan.

His brother looked away.

“You knew.””

Ethan whispered:

“I found out six years ago.””

Arthur felt betrayed all over again.

“And you didn’t tell me?””

Ethan looked at him.

“Because the moment you remembered…”

A pause.

“They would know.””

“Who?””

Ethan looked toward the security cameras.

Then his expression changed.

“Too late.””

Everyone turned.

The cameras in the garage activated.

Every screen showed the same image.

A woman.

Standing somewhere inside the building.

Arthur recognized her.

Victoria Hale.

But this time, she wasn’t afraid.

She was smiling.

A message appeared beneath her face.

*Thank you for bringing everyone together.*

Arthur stared.

Then another line appeared.

*Now I can finally finish what I started.*

Eleanor grabbed Leo.

Arthur looked at the screens.

“Where is she?””

Marcus checked his tablet.

His face drained of color.

“Sir…”

“What?””

“She’s not inside the building.””

Arthur frowned.

“Then where?””

Marcus looked at the location data.

“She’s at the old Vale property.””

Arthur froze.

The cabin.

The photograph.

The place where Eleanor had hidden.

A final message appeared.

*Come home, Arthur.*

Then the screen went black.

Eleanor whispered:

“She has Leo’s files.””

Arthur turned.

“What files?””

Eleanor’s face was filled with fear.

“The ones that prove why they wanted him.””

Arthur looked at Leo.

Then at the dark screens.

And he understood.

This was never about the past.

Never about revenge.

Never about secrets.

It was about a child.

His child.

And somewhere in the mountains, someone was waiting for them.

Someone who knew Arthur better than anyone.

Because she had spent eleven years studying him.

Victoria Hale.

The woman who had declared his wife dead.

The woman who had protected Orion.

The woman who knew the truth about Leo.

Arthur stepped toward the elevator.

This time, nobody stopped him.

Because everyone understood.

May you like

The final secret was waiting.

And this time, Arthur was going to face it.
