Chapter 5: The Witness Who Disappeared

The photograph shook in my hand.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I recognized the person standing beside my wrecked vehicle.

And for the first time that night, I had no idea what to believe.

The ballroom remained frozen.

Hundreds of eyes watched me.

Everyone wanted the answer.

Everyone wanted to know who had been standing beside my car on the night my life changed forever.

I stared at the photograph again.

The image was grainy.

Taken from a distance.

But there was no mistaking the person.

My brother.

Robert Hale.

The man who had spent the last two years believing I was a broken version of myself.

The man who had looked at me with disappointment instead of concern.

The man who had just stood in this room and acted shocked by Vanessa’s betrayal.

He was there.

At the accident scene.

“Marcus: Robert.””

His name came out like a whisper.

The room turned toward him.

Robert’s face drained of color.

“No.””

One word.

But it carried everything.

Denial.

Fear.

A memory he had tried to bury.

“Robert: That’s not what you think.””

I looked at him.

The same sentence everyone says when the truth is exactly what it looks like.

I walked closer.

The photograph stayed between us.

“Marcus: Then tell me what I’m looking at.””

Robert opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Vanessa stepped back.

For once, she wasn’t the center of attention.

She was watching someone else fall apart.

Daniel looked annoyed.

Not surprised.

Annoyed.

That detail mattered.

Because Daniel wasn’t shocked that Robert was in the picture.

He already knew.

“Marcus: You knew.””

I looked at Daniel.

His eyes narrowed.

“Daniel: Knew what?””

I laughed quietly.

“Marcus: Don’t insult me.””

I held up the photograph.

“You knew Robert was there.””

Silence.

That was enough.

Robert looked at Daniel.

And I saw something I had missed before.

Fear.

Not of me.

Of him.

“Marcus: How long have you been controlling everyone?””

Daniel smiled slightly.

“Daniel: You always did love dramatic questions.””

I ignored him.

My eyes stayed on Robert.

“Marcus: Why were you there?””

Robert looked away.

“Marcus: Look at me.””

Slowly, he did.

His eyes were wet.

“Robert: I didn’t hurt you.””

The words came quickly.

Too quickly.

“Marcus: I didn’t ask if you hurt me.””

A pause.

“I asked why you were there.””

Robert looked around the room.

At the guests.

At the people watching.

Then at me.

“Robert: Because Daniel called me.””

My chest tightened.

“Marcus: Why?””

Robert swallowed.

“Robert: He said there was a problem.””

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“Daniel: Robert, stop.””

That was the first time I had seen Daniel lose control.

Not anger.

Panic.

Small.

Almost invisible.

But real.

Robert noticed too.

And something changed.

For years, Daniel had convinced people he was untouchable.

But now someone was finally saying no.

“Robert: No.””

His voice became stronger.

“I’m done protecting you.””

The room shifted.

Daniel stared at him.

“Daniel: Be careful.””

Robert laughed bitterly.

“Robert: That’s what you always say.””

He looked at me.

“Robert: You want the truth?””

I nodded.

“Robert: I went to the crash site because Daniel told me Marcus had been drinking.””

My face hardened.

“Marcus: I don’t drink and drive.””

“I know.””

The answer came immediately.

Robert lowered his head.

“I knew.””

The pain in his voice was worse than anger.

“I knew you.””

He wiped his face.

“But Daniel showed me messages. He showed me fake records. He told me you were becoming reckless.””

I looked at Daniel.

He didn’t deny it.

“Robert: He said if something happened to you, I needed to be prepared.””

My hands tightened.

“Marcus: Prepared for what?””

Robert looked at me.

“To take over.””

The room went silent.

There it was.

The reason.

Not revenge.

Not survival.

Power.

Daniel had been arranging pieces on the board.

And every person around him was just another piece.

I turned toward Vanessa.

“You knew about Robert?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

For once, I believed her.

Not because she deserved trust.

Because her reaction was different.

She looked genuinely surprised.

Daniel noticed.

And smiled.

“Daniel: See? Even now, she doesn’t understand everything.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel ignored her.

I stepped forward.

“Marcus: You used all of us.””

Daniel smiled.

“Marcus: Vanessa thought she was going to inherit my company.””

He glanced at her.

“She was.””

Vanessa froze.

Then she understood.

“What?””

Daniel continued calmly.

“But she was never going to control it.””

Her face changed.

“Daniel: You were always going to be a temporary owner.””

The ballroom erupted with whispers.

Vanessa stared at him.

“Vanessa: You promised me.””

Daniel shrugged.

“I promised you a future.””

A pause.

“I never promised you power.””

For the first time, I felt something close to sympathy for Vanessa.

Not forgiveness.

Never that.

But understanding.

She had betrayed me because she thought she was winning.

She didn’t realize she was just another victim.

“Marcus: So what was the real plan?””

Daniel looked at me.

“You.””

I frowned.

“Marcus: Me?””

He walked closer.

“Daniel: Everything was about making you disappear.””

His voice became colder.

“You built something too big. Something nobody could take from you while you were standing.””

A pause.

“So we made sure you couldn’t stand.””

The words hung in the air.

I looked at my wheelchair.

The symbol everyone thought represented my weakness.

But now I saw it differently.

That chair wasn’t proof that they won.

It was proof that I survived.

“Marcus: You failed.””

Daniel smiled.

“No.””

He reached into his coat.

The guests moved backward.

Security stepped forward.

But Daniel simply pulled out a small device.

A phone.

He tapped the screen.

Then turned it toward me.

A video started playing.

My blood froze.

It showed my hospital room.

Two years earlier.

After the accident.

I was unconscious.

Machines surrounded me.

And standing beside my bed…

Was David.

My assistant.

Talking to someone on the phone.

The audio was low.

But clear enough.

“David’s recorded voice: He survived.””

A pause.

“David’s recorded voice: Yes, but he won’t know the truth.””

I looked at David.

His face collapsed.

Because he knew what came next.

The video continued.

David’s voice.

“David’s recorded voice: If Marcus ever finds out, we’re finished.””

The screen went black.

Nobody moved.

I turned slowly toward David.

He looked like a man watching his entire life disappear.

“Marcus: What else did you hide from me?””

David didn’t answer.

“Marcus: What else?””

His lips trembled.

Then he whispered:

“David: The accident wasn’t the worst thing that happened that night.””

A cold silence filled the room.

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

David looked at Daniel.

Daniel looked away.

And that was when I knew.

There was another secret.

Something worse than the crash.

Something everyone had agreed to hide.

The officer who brought the photograph stepped forward.

“Officer: Mr. Hale…”

I turned.

He held another document.

“Officer: We found the original emergency report.””

My heartbeat slowed.

Because I already knew.

Whatever was written there would change everything.

The officer handed me the paper.

I unfolded it.

And read the first line.

*Patient status: Not alone at the time of impact.*

My eyes moved lower.

Then I saw the name.

The name of the person who had been inside my car when it crashed.

May you like

The name of the person who had disappeared that night.

The name nobody wanted me to remember.
