Chapter 6: The Passenger Nobody Remembered

The name on the paper felt impossible.

For two years, I had replayed the night of my accident thousands of times.

The sound of twisting metal.

The smell of gasoline.

The cold rain hitting the windshield.

The pain.

The hospital lights.

The doctors telling me I was lucky to be alive.

But there was one thing I never remembered.

A passenger.

The official story was always the same.

I was driving alone.

A tragic accident.

A terrible moment.

A single man fighting to survive.

But the emergency report said something else.

*Patient status: Not alone at the time of impact.*

And below that line was a name.

A name that made the entire room disappear.

*Elijah Hale.*

My father.

I stopped breathing.

For a moment, I was no longer standing in my mansion.

I was twenty years old again.

Sitting across from my father in his old office.

Listening to him tell me that trust was the most expensive thing a person could give away.

My father had died fifteen years before my accident.

At least, that was what everyone believed.

I slowly looked up.

“Marcus: This is impossible.””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone in that room knew the truth.

They had all known something I didn’t.

I turned toward Robert.

“Marcus: My father was in the car?””

Robert’s face collapsed.

He looked older suddenly.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like he had been carrying a weight that finally became too heavy.

“Robert: Marcus…”

“Marcus: Answer me.””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The word broke something inside me.

“Marcus: You knew?””

Robert nodded slowly.

“I knew he was alive.””

The room erupted.

Guests whispered.

People stepped back.

Vanessa stared at Robert like she was seeing him for the first time.

Even Daniel looked uncomfortable.

That surprised me.

Because Daniel had always looked like the person with all the answers.

But now he looked like someone who had lost control.

“Marcus: My father was alive?””

Robert looked down.

“Robert: After the accident.””

My hands shook slightly.

Not from weakness.

From trying to understand.

“My father died fifteen years ago.””

Robert looked at me.

“No.””

A pause.

“He disappeared.””

The sentence hit harder.

Because death gives people an ending.

Disappearance leaves questions forever.

I looked at Daniel.

“Marcus: You knew.””

Daniel remained silent.

That was all the confirmation I needed.

I stepped closer.

“Marcus: You knew my father was alive.””

Daniel finally spoke.

“Daniel: Yes.””

The guests gasped.

Vanessa looked furious.

“Vanessa: You never told me.””

Daniel ignored her.

I stared at him.

“Marcus: Why?””

His expression changed.

Not guilt.

Something else.

Pain.

For the first time, I saw a crack in Daniel’s perfect control.

“Daniel: Because your father knew the truth.””

“Marcus: About what?””

Daniel looked at Robert.

Then David.

Then me.

“Daniel: About all of us.””

The answer made no sense.

“Marcus: Explain.””

Daniel walked toward the fireplace.

The confidence in his steps was gone.

“Daniel: Your father wasn’t just your father, Marcus.””

I waited.

“He was the reason your company existed.””

I frowned.

Everyone knew my father had helped me when I was young.

But that wasn’t a secret.

“Marcus: He invested in me.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“He built the foundation.””

A silence followed.

“Daniel: Before you were old enough to understand business, your father created a network. Investments. Properties. Partnerships.””

He paused.

“And then one day, he disappeared.””

I looked at Robert.

“Marcus: Why?””

Robert answered quietly.

“Because someone betrayed him.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel said:

“Your father was investigating someone inside the company.””

I looked around.

“Marcus: Who?””

Daniel’s eyes moved toward David.

And David immediately stepped back.

“No.””

That reaction told me everything.

“Marcus: David.””

He shook his head.

“No, Marcus. You don’t understand.””

“Marcus: Then help me understand.””

David looked terrified.

Not because he was exposed.

Because he knew what was coming.

“David: Your father found out Daniel was moving money.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“Daniel: Be careful.””

David ignored him.

“He found accounts. Hidden transfers. Shell companies.””

The room became silent.

“David: He was going to expose him.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Marcus: And you stopped him.””

Daniel stared at me.

“No.””

His voice was colder.

“Someone stopped him.””

I narrowed my eyes.

“Marcus: Who?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked at Vanessa.

She immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Daniel smiled slightly.

“Daniel: You should tell him.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Vanessa: I don’t know anything.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You know more than you think.””

I looked between them.

“Marcus: What is he talking about?””

Vanessa said nothing.

And that silence was becoming familiar.

Everyone had pieces of my life.

Everyone knew secrets.

Except me.

Finally, Vanessa whispered:

“Vanessa: Your father contacted me.””

The room went completely still.

“When?””

She looked at the floor.

“Vanessa: Before I married you.””

My chest tightened.

“Marcus: Why?””

She swallowed.

“He wanted me to watch you.””

I stared at her.

The woman who betrayed me.

The woman who destroyed my trust.

The woman who had been lying from the beginning.

But now there was something else.

Something I hadn’t expected.

Fear.

“Marcus: Watch me for who?””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

Then she said:

“For your father.””

A chill moved through me.

“Marcus: My father was alive.””

She nodded.

“And he knew everything.””

I took a step back.

The room spun.

For years, I thought my accident was the beginning of the mystery.

It wasn’t.

It was the middle.

A piece of a much larger game.

“Marcus: Where is he?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Robert.

Then David.

Then Daniel.

Finally Vanessa.

“Marcus: Where is my father?””

Daniel’s expression changed.

He looked toward the entrance.

Like he was expecting someone.

That scared me.

Because Daniel was never afraid.

Then the mansion lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

The large screen above the fireplace suddenly turned on by itself.

Everyone turned.

A video appeared.

An old man sitting in a dark room.

Gray hair.

Tired eyes.

A face I had not seen in fifteen years.

My father.

Elijah Hale.

Alive.

The room froze.

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t speak.

Then the video began.

His voice filled the ballroom.

“Elijah: Marcus, if you are watching this…”

He paused.

And looked directly into the camera.

“…then they finally failed to keep you quiet.””

My heart pounded.

“Elijah: I need you to listen carefully.””

The image shook slightly.

“Elijah: The people standing around you tonight are not the only ones who betrayed you.””

Everyone looked at each other.

My father continued.

“Elijah: The person who ordered your accident…”

The screen glitched.

The video froze.

Then came back.

My father’s final words appeared.

“…is the person you trust most.””

The screen went black.

Nobody moved.

Because everyone understood the meaning.

The person I trusted most.

The person who knew me better than anyone.

The person who had protected me for years.

Slowly…

May you like

Every eye in the room turned toward one person.

Robert.
