The Birthday Table Betrayal / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8: The Woman From His Past

The woman standing at the end of my driveway looked exactly like a memory I had tried not to revisit.

Older.

Different.

But unmistakable.

Caroline Reed.

Marcus’s first wife.

Brielle’s mother.

The woman I had spent thirty years trying to respect from a distance.

She held a thick brown file against her chest.

A file with my name written across the front.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Not Marcus.

Not Brielle.

Not even Caroline.

It was as if the entire garden had been waiting for her arrival.

Then Marcus whispered the words that confirmed everything.

“Caroline.””

Her eyes moved toward him.

And the expression on her face wasn’t surprise.

It was disappointment.

“You knew I would come eventually.””

Marcus looked away.

“I didn’t know.””

Caroline walked closer.

Her heels clicked against the stone patio.

Every step felt like a countdown.

Brielle stared at her mother.

“Mom?””

Caroline stopped.

For a moment, the hardness disappeared from her face.

She looked at her daughter.

Then at Marcus.

Then at me.

“Evelyn.””

My name sounded strange coming from her mouth.

Like she had said it many times before.

Maybe in conversations I wasn’t part of.

Maybe in judgments I never heard.

I tightened my grip on the insurance papers.

“You have something with my name on it.””

She looked at the folder.

“Yes.””

“What is it?””

Caroline glanced at everyone around the garden.

Then she looked at Marcus.

“Before I answer that, I need to know something.””

Her voice became colder.

“Did you tell her everything?””

Marcus said nothing.

Caroline nodded slowly.

“I thought so.””

I stepped forward.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

“No more conversations where I’m standing here while people decide what I deserve to know.””

My voice was calm.

But inside, everything was shaking.

“Open the file.””

Caroline studied me.

Then she handed it over.

I took it.

It was heavier than it looked.

Not because of the paper.

Because of what it represented.

Another secret.

Another person who had been carrying information about my life.

I opened the folder.

The first page was a legal document.

The second was a financial report.

The third stopped me.

A photograph.

Marcus.

Denise.

And another man I didn’t recognize.

They were standing outside a building.

The date was printed underneath.

Three months earlier.

I looked at Marcus.

“Who is that?””

His face changed.

“I don’t know.””

Caroline laughed quietly.

“Of course you don’t.””

Marcus turned toward her.

“Caroline.””

“No, Marcus.””

Her voice sharpened.

“You don’t get to pretend anymore.””

Brielle looked confused.

“What is happening?””

Caroline looked at her daughter.

“I wish I knew.””

The pain in her voice was real.

And for the first time, I saw something beyond the anger.

A mother who was also betrayed.

“What is this?”” I asked.

Caroline looked at me.

“That man is Victor Hale.””

The name meant nothing to me.

It clearly meant something to Marcus.

His face went pale.

Daniel noticed.

“You know him.””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Marcus.””

Finally, Marcus spoke.

“He was my business partner.””

The garden went silent.

“You told me the investment failed,” I said.

“It did.””

“No.””

I looked at the photograph.

“This is not just a failed investment.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“No.””

“Then what is it?””

Caroline answered.

“A fraud investigation.””

The word hit harder than I expected.

Fraud.

A serious accusation.

A new layer beneath everything.

I looked at Marcus.

“Were you involved?””

His eyes immediately met mine.

“No.””

The answer was instant.

But this time, I heard something different.

Not guilt.

Fear.

“I made bad decisions,” he said.

“I trusted the wrong people.””

I looked at the photograph.

“Like Denise?””

Nobody answered.

Caroline opened another section of the file.

“Denise wasn’t just helping him.””

My stomach tightened.

“What do you mean?””

“She was helping Victor.””

The air disappeared from my lungs.

“No.””

Caroline looked at me.

“I know it’s difficult to believe.””

“She’s my friend.””

“I know.””

“She would never…”

I stopped.

Because I had said those exact words about everyone else.

Marcus.

Rachel.

Brielle.

Every betrayal started with a sentence like that.

They would never.

Until they did.

Daniel took the photograph.

“Where did you get this?””

Caroline looked at him.

“From Victor’s former assistant.””

Daniel studied the image.

“When?””

“Yesterday.””

“Why give it to you?””

Caroline looked toward Marcus.

“Because Victor wanted something.””

“What?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me.

“What did he want?””

Caroline looked at me.

“You.””

The garden went still.

I frowned.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Her eyes moved to the folder in my hands.

“Because you are the only person who doesn’t know where the money went.””

I felt cold.

“I don’t understand.””

Caroline sighed.

“Marcus wasn’t just trying to hide debt.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Don’t.””

She ignored him.

“He was trying to find out where the money disappeared.””

I looked at Marcus.

“Your money?””

He nodded.

“The investment money.””

“And?””

His voice was low.

“Some of it was moved.””

“By who?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Denise’s empty chair.

The answer was becoming clearer.

But I didn’t want it to be.

Caroline continued.

“Victor used people close to Marcus.””

“Who?””

She looked at me.

“People who had access.””

My heart sank.

“Denise.””

Caroline nodded.

“And others.””

I looked at Rachel.

She looked devastated.

“Rachel?””

Rachel shook her head immediately.

“No.””

Caroline looked at her.

“Not intentionally.””

Rachel froze.

“What does that mean?””

“It means someone used your help.””

Rachel looked confused.

“My help?””

Caroline nodded.

“You gave them access.””

Rachel’s face went pale.

“When?””

“Six months ago.””

The same time.

The same period.

Everything always returned to that time.

When I was sick.

When everyone said they were helping.

When everyone was making choices for me.

Rachel covered her mouth.

“No.””

Caroline softened slightly.

“They needed someone trustworthy.””

Rachel looked at me.

“I didn’t know.””

I believed her.

And somehow that hurt too.

Because innocent people could still cause damage.

I looked at Marcus.

“What about the insurance policy?””

Caroline looked down.

“That was never about replacing you.””

I frowned.

“Then what was it about?””

She looked at Brielle.

Brielle immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Caroline’s expression changed.

“Brielle.””

“I didn’t know.””

“I know.””

Brielle’s eyes filled.

“Then why are you looking at me like that?””

Caroline took a breath.

“Because Victor wanted access to the money if something happened to Marcus.””

A terrible silence followed.

“What?””

Daniel looked up.

“Meaning?””

Caroline opened another document.

“The beneficiary change was a distraction.””

I stared.

“A distraction?””

“Yes.””

“From what?””

Caroline looked directly at Marcus.

“From the fact that someone was trying to make Marcus appear responsible for missing funds.””

Nobody spoke.

I looked at the documents.

The fake signature.

The beneficiary change.

The debt.

The investigation.

Everything suddenly felt connected.

Someone had created chaos around us.

But why?

Caroline handed me one final page.

“This is why I came.””

I looked down.

It was a bank transfer record.

A large transfer.

The account receiving the money was hidden.

But the sender was visible.

Marcus Reed.

My heart dropped.

I looked at him.

“You sent this?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

“Then why is your name here?””

“I don’t know.””

Daniel took the paper.

His expression changed.

“This isn’t a transfer authorization.””

“What is it?””

“A copied record.””

He looked at Caroline.

“Where did you get this?””

“From Victor.””

Daniel went quiet.

And that worried me.

“Daniel?””

He looked at me.

“This means someone has been fabricating evidence.””

I looked around the garden.

At the people I loved.

At the people I trusted.

At the people who had lied.

A terrifying thought entered my mind.

If someone could fake my signature…

If someone could fake Marcus’s records…

If someone could manipulate documents…

Then maybe the biggest betrayal wasn’t the one we had discovered.

Maybe it was the one we hadn’t.

Caroline suddenly looked toward the driveway.

Her face changed.

“What is it?”” I asked.

She didn’t answer.

She was staring at a black SUV parked across the street.

The same SUV that had been following her.

Daniel noticed too.

“We need to move.””

Marcus frowned.

“Why?””

Caroline’s voice became barely audible.

“Because Victor knows I’m here.””

A second later, my phone rang.

Everyone froze.

I looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

For a moment, there was only silence.

Then a man’s voice spoke.

Calm.

Confident.

Familiar enough to scare me.

“Evelyn Reed?””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Yes?””

The man laughed softly.

“I’ve been waiting years for you to finally ask the right questions.””

I looked at Marcus.

He was already afraid.

“Who is this?””

The voice answered.

“The person who knows why your husband never told you the truth about the night he met me.””

My breath stopped.

“What night?””

The man paused.

May you like

Then said the one sentence that changed everything.

“The night Marcus chose to save Brielle… and leave you to take the fall.””
