The Birthday Table Betrayal / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9: The Night Everyone Lied

The phone felt impossibly heavy in my hand.

The entire garden disappeared.

The broken cake.

The scattered flowers.

The guests.

The people standing around me with years of secrets between us.

None of it mattered anymore.

Because one sentence had changed the shape of everything.

*The night Marcus chose to save Brielle… and leave you to take the fall.*

I looked at my husband.

He wasn’t confused.

He wasn’t angry.

He looked terrified.

And that was the answer before he ever spoke.

“Who is this?”” I asked again.

The man on the phone chuckled softly.

“You know exactly who I am.””

“No, I don’t.””

“You know my name.””

A silence followed.

Then Marcus whispered.

“Victor.””

The name traveled through the garden like a warning.

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Victor.

The person behind the missing money.

The person connected to Denise.

The person who had been pulling strings while my family destroyed itself.

“What do you want?”” I asked.

The voice became colder.

“I want the truth to come out.””

I almost laughed.

“The truth?””

I looked at Marcus.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Victor continued.

“Your husband has spent months trying to protect his reputation.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to him.””

I turned away from Marcus.

“Why?””

“Because he’s manipulating you.””

I looked at him.

“Is he lying?””

Marcus opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That silence hurt more than any answer.

Victor heard it.

“He can’t deny it.””

I gripped the phone tighter.

“What happened that night?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Evelyn.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“You don’t get to stop this.””

The garden was completely silent.

Even the guests who remained had stopped pretending they weren’t listening.

I looked at Marcus.

“What night?””

He lowered his head.

“The night everything changed.””

“What changed?””

He didn’t answer.

Victor did.

“The night your husband found out the investment wasn’t just failing.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Victor discovered someone had been stealing from him.””

I frowned.

“Someone?””

Marcus looked at Victor’s direction.

Even though he wasn’t there.

“You’re lying.””

Victor laughed.

“Am I?””

A pause.

“Ask Marcus who he met that night.””

I looked at my husband.

“Who did you meet?””

Marcus’s face tightened.

“Evelyn…”

“Who?””

He looked away.

That was enough.

I felt something inside me break.

Because after everything.

After all the documents.

After all the explanations.

The one thing I still wanted was for Marcus to look at me and tell me the truth.

But he still hesitated.

“I met Victor.””

The words came quietly.

“When?””

“The night of the accident.””

My breath caught.

“Accident?””

Nobody moved.

Rachel looked at Marcus.

Brielle looked terrified.

Even Caroline looked surprised.

“What accident?”” I asked.

Marcus closed his eyes.

“The car crash.””

I stared at him.

“What car crash?””

The silence became unbearable.

“Marcus.””

His voice was barely above a whisper.

“The crash that almost killed Brielle.””

Everything stopped.

I looked at Brielle.

She looked down.

“You told me she was in a minor accident.””

Marcus swallowed.

“It was worse than I said.””

“How much worse?””

“She was driving after leaving a meeting with Victor.””

My mind raced.

A meeting.

Victor.

Brielle.

Money.

Documents.

“Why didn’t I know this?””

Marcus looked ashamed.

“Because I asked you not to know.””

The words were so simple.

So painful.

I stepped back.

“You asked me not to know?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I was afraid.””

I shook my head.

“Of what?””

He looked at Brielle.

And I understood.

“Of losing her.””

Marcus’s eyes filled.

“She was my daughter.””

“And I was your wife.””

He looked devastated.

“I know.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t.””

My voice became quieter.

“You don’t know what it feels like to realize you weren’t the person your husband chose first.””

Brielle stepped forward.

“Evelyn…”

I looked at her.

“Did you know?””

She looked like she wanted to lie.

But she couldn’t.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt.

“How long?””

“Since the accident.””

“And you let me believe everything was normal?””

She cried.

“I was scared.””

Everyone was scared.

That was the excuse of the day.

Fear.

Fear had built this entire nightmare.

I looked at Victor’s papers.

The fake documents.

The insurance policy.

The missing money.

“What happened after the accident?””

Marcus sat down slowly.

Like he finally realized there was nowhere left to hide.

“Brielle wasn’t supposed to meet Victor.””

“Then why did she?””

Brielle wiped her face.

“Because I wanted answers.””

Everyone looked at her.

She continued.

“When Dad lost the investment money, he blamed himself.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Brielle.””

“No, Dad.””

Her voice shook.

“You never told her because you were trying to protect me.””

She looked at me.

“But I knew something was wrong.””

She took a breath.

“I found messages between Dad and Victor.””

“What kind of messages?””

“Threats.””

The word hung there.

“Victor was threatening him?””

Brielle nodded.

“He said Dad would take responsibility for everything if he didn’t cooperate.””

Marcus looked down.

“He was scared.””

I looked at him.

“And you went to Victor?””

He nodded.

“I wanted to negotiate.””

“And Brielle came with you?””

“No.””

Brielle interrupted.

“I followed him.””

Marcus looked at her.

“I told you not to.””

“I know.””

The pain between them was obvious.

A father and daughter who had both made terrible choices trying to protect each other.

But their love had destroyed everyone around them.

“What happened at the meeting?””

Brielle looked away.

“He wanted Dad to sign documents.””

“What documents?””

“The same ones that later appeared.””

My heart tightened.

“The insurance documents?””

She nodded.

“And the property papers.””

I looked at Marcus.

“You didn’t sign them?””

“No.””

“Then why did they exist?””

Nobody answered.

Then Caroline spoke.

“Because Victor had someone inside.””

Everyone looked at her.

She held the file tighter.

“I spent years thinking Marcus was careless.””

She looked at him.

“I was wrong.””

Marcus looked surprised.

“Caroline.””

“I thought you ruined everything because you were arrogant.””

Her voice softened.

“But you were trying to cover up someone else’s crime.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Who was the inside person?””

Caroline hesitated.

Then looked toward the driveway.

Everyone followed her eyes.

The black SUV was still there.

Waiting.

“She doesn’t know.””

The voice came from behind us.

Everyone turned.

A woman stood near the garden entrance.

My heart stopped.

Because I knew that voice.

I knew that face.

It was Denise.

She slowly walked toward us.

Nobody spoke.

She looked different.

Not physically.

But the confidence was gone.

The woman who had smiled beside my birthday cake now looked exhausted.

“Denise.””

My voice was barely a whisper.

She stopped.

“I’m sorry.””

I stared at her.

“No.””

She flinched.

“No?””

“You don’t get to start with sorry.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I know.””

“Do you?””

My voice shook.

“Because I spent years telling people how lucky I was to have you.””

She looked down.

“I know.””

“You were the person I called when Marcus and I fought.””

“I know.””

“You knew everything.””

“Yes.””

“And you used it.””

Her silence answered.

Daniel stepped closer.

“You were working with Victor.””

Denise looked at him.

“I was trying to stop him.””

I laughed bitterly.

“By helping him?””

“I had no choice.””

“There is always a choice.””

Her face collapsed.

“Not when someone has your family trapped.””

Everyone froze.

“What did you say?””

Denise looked at Brielle.

Then Marcus.

Then me.

“Victor didn’t start this because of money.””

The garden went silent.

“He started this because he wanted revenge.””

“Against who?””

Denise looked directly at Marcus.

“Your husband.””

Marcus frowned.

“Why?””

Denise’s eyes filled with guilt.

“Because twenty years ago, Marcus took something from Victor.””

I stared.

“What?””

Denise looked at me.

“The truth about who caused the accident that changed all of their lives.””

Marcus went completely still.

“What are you talking about?””

Denise whispered the words nobody expected.

“The crash that killed Brielle’s mother.””

Brielle gasped.

Caroline covered her mouth.

Marcus looked like he had been punched.

“No.””

Denise stepped closer.

“Yes.””

Her voice broke.

“Victor wasn’t trying to steal your money.””

She looked at me.

“He was trying to expose the secret Marcus buried for twenty years.””

I looked at my husband.

And for the first time all day…

he looked like a man who was afraid of what I would discover.

Not because he had lost everything.

Because I was finally about to learn what he had hidden.

Marcus whispered:

“Evelyn…”

May you like

I stared at him.

“What happened twenty years ago?””
