The Birthday Table / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6: The Brother Who Knew Too Much

Marcus did not answer immediately.

The coffee shop around him continued moving.

People laughed quietly at nearby tables.

A barista called out someone’s order.

A child outside chased a pigeon across the sidewalk.

Normal things.

But Marcus felt like his entire world had shifted.

His brother was calling.

The same brother Elena had warned him about.

The same brother whose name had been sitting in the middle of a sentence that changed everything.

Claire watched his face.

“Don’t say anything yet,” she whispered.

Marcus looked at the phone.

Daniel’s name continued flashing.

A part of him wanted to ignore it.

Another part needed answers.

After three rings, he answered.

“Daniel.””

A pause.

Then his brother’s voice.

“Marcus.””

The sound was familiar.

Too familiar.

Daniel had been there his whole life.

They had grown up sharing a bedroom.

They had played football in the street until their mother yelled at them to come inside.

They had stood beside each other at their father’s funeral.

And now Marcus was wondering if the person he trusted most had helped destroy his family.

“You wanted to talk,” Marcus said.

Daniel sighed.

“I heard about the party.””

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

“How?””

Another pause.

“Vanessa called me.””

Of course she did.

Marcus looked down at Elena’s letter.

“What did she tell you?””

“That you’re angry.””

“I am.””

“She said you found Elena’s picture in the trash.””

Marcus’s grip tightened.

“She told you that?””

“Yes.””

“And what did you say?””

Daniel was quiet.

That silence answered more than words.

Marcus leaned back.

“Daniel.””

“I told her she made a mistake.””

Marcus looked surprised.

“You told her that?””

“Yes.””

“Then why do you sound like you’re defending her?””

“I’m not.””

“Then explain why Elena wrote your name.””

The line went silent.

Not a normal pause.

A shocked pause.

Marcus felt his heartbeat change.

“You know about the letter.””

Daniel didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

“Where did you get that?””

Marcus stood.

Claire looked at him.

He stepped away from the table.

“You didn’t answer my question.””

Another pause.

Then Daniel said:

“Marcus, there are things you don’t understand.””

The exact words he feared.

Things you don’t understand.

People always said that before revealing something they wanted to control.

“What things?””

“I need to see you.””

“No.””

“Marcus.””

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“You need to answer me now.””

Daniel exhaled.

“You’re making this worse.””

Marcus almost laughed.

“Worse for who?””

Silence.

Then Daniel said:

“For everyone.””

Marcus froze.

Everyone.

Not just Vanessa.

Not just him.

Everyone.

“Where are you?””

“Marcus—”

“Where are you?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then gave him an address.

An old warehouse near the edge of town.

Marcus knew the place.

It belonged to one of Daniel’s old business partners.

A place with no cameras.

No witnesses.

That bothered him.

“I’ll be there in twenty minutes,” Marcus said.

“Come alone.””

The words made Marcus stop.

“Why?””

“Because if Claire is involved, she already knows too much.””

Marcus looked back at Claire.

His expression changed.

Daniel continued.

“Don’t trust anyone until you hear the whole story.””

The call ended.

The warehouse smelled like dust and old metal.

Marcus stepped inside.

Daniel stood near a table covered with papers.

He looked older than Marcus remembered.

Tired.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

“Thanks for coming.””

Marcus didn’t sit.

“Start talking.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You look just like Dad when you’re angry.””

“Don’t do that.””

“Do what?””

“Act like we’re brothers having a normal conversation.””

Daniel looked away.

Marcus stepped closer.

“You knew.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I knew some things.””

Marcus felt something inside him break.

“Some things?””

“You’re acting like I planned everything.””

“Did you?””

Daniel looked up quickly.

“No.””

The answer came too fast.

Marcus noticed.

“What did you do?””

Daniel rubbed his face.

“Marcus…”

“What did you do?””

Daniel walked to the table.

He picked up a folder.

“I met Vanessa before you did.””

Marcus stared.

There it was.

The truth.

Finally.

“How long before?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

“How long?””

“Six months.””

Marcus felt sick.

Six months.

Six months before Vanessa became part of their lives.

Six months before Marcus thought he had found someone who understood his pain.

“You introduced her to me.””

Daniel looked down.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

The question came out quieter than Marcus expected.

“Why would you do that?””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“Because I thought I was helping you.””

Marcus stared.

“You thought bringing a stranger into my life after my wife died was helping?””

“I didn’t know she was dangerous.””

“Then what did you know?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“She knew things.””

“What things?””

“About Elena.””

Marcus went still.

“What about Elena?””

Daniel swallowed.

“She knew Elena was sick before most people did.””

“How?””

“I don’t know.””

“That’s not good enough.””

“I’m telling you the truth.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Daniel opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Photos.

Notes.

Marcus looked closer.

His stomach tightened.

They were pictures of Vanessa.

Taken before she met him.

At restaurants.

Outside buildings.

Talking to people.

“This is surveillance?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

“Records.””

Daniel pointed to one photo.

“That’s Vanessa meeting a lawyer.””

Marcus looked.

“When?””

“Two months before Elena died.””

The room became quiet.

“What lawyer?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Your family attorney.””

Marcus stepped back.

“No.””

“I know.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Marcus, I wish it was.””

The family attorney.

The person who handled their wills.

Their finances.

Their private documents.

Someone who knew everything.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Because I was afraid.””

Marcus stared.

“Afraid of what?””

“That you would hate me.””

The answer surprised him.

Daniel sat down.

“I made a mistake.””

Marcus didn’t speak.

“I thought Vanessa was good for you.””

Daniel looked at the papers.

“She knew exactly what to say. She knew you were lonely. She knew Noah needed someone.””

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“She used my son.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

The word was painful.

Marcus looked away.

“Why now?””

Daniel reached into the folder.

He pulled out a small flash drive.

“Because I found this.””

Marcus took it.

“What is it?””

“Something Elena left.””

Marcus looked confused.

“Where?””

“Your old house.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Before you sold it after Elena died, I went back there.””

Marcus remembered.

The old house.

The place where Noah took his first steps.

The place where Elena spent her final days.

“What did you find?””

Daniel looked toward the door.

“Something Vanessa didn’t know existed.””

Marcus held the flash drive.

“What’s on it?””

Daniel hesitated.

“A recording.””

“Of what?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Vanessa.””

Marcus felt cold.

“When?””

“The week before Elena died.””

A thousand thoughts rushed through his mind.

Elena.

Vanessa.

The hospital.

The missing page.

The key.

The photograph.

Everything connected.

“Play it.””

Daniel looked nervous.

“Marcus…”

“Play it.””

Daniel connected the drive to an old laptop.

A file appeared.

No title.

Just a date.

The date was three days before Elena died.

Marcus pressed play.

At first, there was only static.

Then a voice.

A woman’s voice.

Vanessa.

Marcus stopped breathing.

“Your husband doesn’t know, does he?””

A second voice answered.

Elena.

Weak.

But clear.

“You need to leave my family alone.””

Marcus’s eyes widened.

Daniel looked at him.

The recording continued.

Vanessa laughed softly.

“You still think you can stop me?””

Elena’s voice trembled.

“You won’t get what you want.””

Then Vanessa said something that made Marcus’s blood turn cold.

Something that proved Elena had been right all along.

“I already have.””

The recording crackled.

Then Elena whispered:

“Marcus will find out.””

Vanessa replied:

“No, he won’t.””

A pause.

Then:

“Because by the time he realizes what happened, he’ll already be married to me.””

Marcus stepped back from the laptop.

The room spun.

Daniel stopped the recording.

Neither brother spoke.

Because there was no explanation left.

No misunderstanding.

No innocent mistake.

Vanessa had known exactly what she was doing.

And she had been planning it before Elena died.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“Where is the rest of the recording?””

Daniel’s face changed.

“What?””

“This file ends too early.””

Daniel looked nervous.

“Marcus…”

“Where is the rest?””

Daniel was silent.

And Marcus realized something.

Daniel wasn’t afraid of Vanessa.

He was afraid of what came next.

Finally, Daniel whispered:

“The rest of the recording is on a second drive.””

“Where?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Vanessa has it.””

Marcus felt his phone vibrate.

A new message.

From Vanessa.

Only five words.

*“I know what you found.””*

Marcus stared at the screen.

May you like

Then another message appeared.

*“Ask your brother what he did after Elena died.””*
