Chapter 7: The Choice Daniel Made
Marcus stared at the message.
*“Ask your brother what he did after Elena died.””*
The words felt heavier than they should have.
Because they weren’t a threat.
They were a reminder.
A reminder that Vanessa still had something.
Something she believed could protect her.
Marcus slowly turned his phone toward Daniel.
“Explain.””
Daniel looked at the screen.
The color drained from his face.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
His voice was calm.
That was what scared Daniel.
“When we were kids, you used to tell me the truth before anyone else.””
Daniel looked down.
“Don’t.””
“Don’t what?””
“Don’t make this about that.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“It is about that.””
The warehouse suddenly felt smaller.
“You were my brother.””
“I still am.””
“Then why am I finding out about your involvement from Vanessa?””
Daniel looked away.
Because there was an answer.
Marcus could see it.
And he hated that he could see it.
“Tell me what you did after Elena died.””
Daniel sat down heavily.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then:
“I made a mistake.””
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“Everyone keeps using that word.””
Daniel looked up.
“Because it’s true.””
“No.””
Marcus shook his head.
“A mistake is forgetting a meeting. A mistake is making a bad investment.””
His voice lowered.
“This was my family.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I know.””
“Do you?””
The question hurt.
Daniel looked at the floor.
“After Elena died, you were not yourself.””
Marcus didn’t respond.
Because that part was true.
He remembered.
The hospital.
The funeral.
The empty bedroom.
The nights when Noah cried because he wanted his mother.
The mornings when Marcus stood in the kitchen and forgot why he walked in there.
“I was trying to help you,” Daniel said.
Marcus laughed quietly.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because I was.””
“By bringing Vanessa into my life?””
Daniel looked at him.
“She seemed like someone who understood grief.””
Marcus stared.
“Because she told you she did?””
“Yes.””
“And you believed her?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Marcus nodded slowly.
“That’s what she does.””
“What?””
“She tells people exactly what they need to hear.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You don’t understand.””
“No, Daniel.””
Marcus pointed at the laptop.
“I understand perfectly.””
He picked up the flash drive.
“She was already planning this.””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“I didn’t know.””
“But you knew enough.””
Silence.
That was the answer.
Marcus walked away from him.
“Tell me everything.””
Daniel looked nervous.
“What?””
“Everything you know.””
“I can’t.””
Marcus turned.
“Can’t?””
Daniel swallowed.
“There are things that could destroy people.””
Marcus stared.
“You mean people who helped Vanessa?””
Daniel said nothing.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“The lawyer.””
Marcus froze.
“The family attorney?””
Daniel nodded.
“How?””
Daniel rubbed his hands together.
“Vanessa had access to information she shouldn’t have had.””
“What information?””
“Your finances. Elena’s medical records. The house documents.””
Marcus felt anger rise.
“How?””
Daniel looked at him.
“I helped her.””
The silence afterward was unbearable.
Marcus stared.
“You.””
Daniel nodded.
“I gave her information.””
“Why?””
“I thought she needed to understand your situation.””
Marcus’s voice became cold.
“You gave a stranger my private information.””
“I trusted her.””
“You didn’t trust her.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“You wanted to believe she was good.””
Daniel looked away.
Because that was exactly it.
He hadn’t been protecting Marcus.
He had been protecting his own decision.
“I was wrong,” Daniel whispered.
Marcus shook his head.
“Wrong doesn’t cover this.””
Daniel nodded.
“I know.””
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Daniel said:
“There’s something else.””
Marcus looked at him.
“What?””
Daniel reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“I found this with the recording.””
Marcus stared.
“Another letter?””
Daniel nodded.
“From Elena.””
Marcus took it carefully.
The envelope was old.
The edges were worn.
His name was written on the front.
But underneath it were three words.
*“Read after truth.””*
Marcus frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked at him.
“I think Elena knew you wouldn’t believe everything at once.””
Marcus opened the envelope.
Inside was a single page.
He began reading.
*Marcus,*
*If you are reading this, then I was right to be afraid.*
His chest tightened.
*But please do not let anger become the thing that controls you. The people who hurt us often want us to destroy ourselves afterward.*
Marcus stopped.
That sounded like Elena.
Always trying to protect him.
Even when she was the one in danger.
*There is something I need you to understand. Vanessa is not the only person responsible for what happened.*
Marcus looked up.
Daniel watched him carefully.
He continued.
*People like Vanessa rarely work alone. They look for doors that are already open. They look for people who are willing to ignore warning signs.*
Marcus slowly lowered the paper.
The meaning was clear.
Elena wasn’t only talking about Vanessa.
She was talking about Daniel.
And maybe others.
He kept reading.
*Marcus, I need you to ask yourself one question. Who benefits most if our family breaks apart?*
A chill moved through him.
The house.
The money.
The inheritance.
The business.
Everything.
*I never wanted Noah to grow up surrounded by anger. If something happens to me, promise me one thing. Do not fight because you miss me. Fight because Noah deserves the truth.*
Marcus closed his eyes.
Noah.
Everything always came back to Noah.
He folded the letter.
Then looked at Daniel.
“Where is Vanessa now?””
Daniel hesitated.
“I don’t know.””
Marcus stared.
“You’re lying.””
“I’m not.””
“Daniel.””
Daniel looked away.
“She contacted me before she contacted you.””
Marcus went still.
“What?””
“She asked me to convince you to let this go.””
Marcus felt his stomach tighten.
“She knew you found the letter.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Marcus’s eyes narrowed.
“Daniel.””
“I called her.””
The words landed.
“You called her?””
“After I saw the video from the party.””
Marcus stepped back.
“You warned her.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I called because I wanted answers.””
“And you told her I was investigating.””
Daniel didn’t deny it.
Marcus looked at him with disappointment more than anger.
That hurt Daniel more.
“I’m sorry.””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“I believe you’re sorry.””
Daniel looked surprised.
“But I don’t know if I can trust you.””
The words broke something.
Daniel looked down.
“I understand.””
Marcus picked up the laptop.
“I need the original recording.””
“You already have it.””
“No.””
Marcus looked at him.
“The full version.””
Daniel was silent.
Then:
“I can get it.””
“From Vanessa?””
“Yes.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
Daniel looked confused.
“No?””
“If she knows you’re helping me, she’ll hide it.””
“Then what do we do?””
Marcus looked at the clock.
He thought about Noah.
He thought about Elena.
He thought about the person who had been manipulating his family from the beginning.
“We stop reacting.””
Daniel waited.
“We find out what she’s protecting.””
That evening, Marcus returned home.
The house was dark.
Too dark.
“Noah?””
No answer.
His heart jumped.
He moved quickly through the rooms.
Then he found Noah upstairs.
Sitting on the floor.
Holding something.
Marcus stopped.
“What happened?””
Noah looked up.
“I found this.””
Marcus walked closer.
In Noah’s hands was an old photo.
A photo Marcus had never seen before.
It showed Elena.
Marcus.
Noah.
And someone else.
Someone standing behind them.
Someone Marcus recognized.
His face changed.
Because the person in the photograph was not supposed to be there.
“Noah,” Marcus whispered.
“Where did you find this?””
Noah pointed toward the closet.
“Vanessa’s room.””
Marcus picked up the picture.
On the back was a date.
A date from before Vanessa ever met him.
And beneath it, a handwritten note:
*“The first meeting.””*
Marcus stared.
Because the photograph proved one thing.
Vanessa had been watching his family long before she entered it.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
Marcus answered.
A woman’s voice whispered:
“Marcus, if you want to know why Elena was really afraid, come alone.””
He froze.
“Who is this?””
The voice paused.
Then said:
“I’m the person Vanessa has been trying to silence for three years.””
The call ended.
And for the first time, Marcus realized something terrifying.
May you like
Vanessa was not running from the truth.
She was running from someone else who knew it.
