The Boy They Tried to Erase / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3: The Voice Victor Recognized

“Are you certain Victor won't suspect anything?””

The man's voice came through the recorder again.

Victor's hand tightened around Noah's shoulder.

He knew that voice.

He knew the measured pauses between words, the slight rasp at the end of a sentence, the almost imperceptible breath before a difficult question.

It belonged to someone he trusted.

Someone who had sat across from him at his office desk less than four hours earlier.

Officer Harris held the recorder near his chest.

“Should I continue playing it, Mr. Romano?””

Victor stared at the device.

“Yes.””

Vanessa suddenly moved toward him.

“No. This is private. You cannot use some stolen recording to destroy my marriage.””

Officer Coleman stepped between her and Victor.

“Ma'am, please stay where you are.””

“You don't understand!”” Vanessa snapped.

“You have no idea what that child is capable of.””

Noah pressed his face against his father's jacket.

Victor felt the boy trembling.

He looked at Vanessa.

“Every time you speak about him, you make him more afraid.””

“Because he knows what he's done!””

“What has he done?””

Vanessa's lips parted.

She glanced at the guests, at Danielle, at the officers, and finally at the recorder.

For the first time since Victor had met her, she appeared to have no prepared answer.

Officer Harris pressed PLAY again.

The man's voice returned.

“Are you certain Victor won't suspect anything?””

Vanessa's recorded response followed.

“He suspects whatever I tell him to suspect. That's the beauty of it.””

A guest near the buffet gasped.

The real Vanessa shook her head.

“That's been edited.””

Officer Coleman looked at her.

“We haven't established that.””

“Then you shouldn't be playing it!””

“Ma'am, you're free to raise concerns through the appropriate process. Right now, we are preserving potential evidence.””

Victor barely heard them.

He was listening to the recording.

The man spoke again.

“What about Noah?””

Vanessa answered without hesitation.

“By the time Victor realizes what's happening, Noah will already be gone.””

Victor's face went rigid.

Danielle brought a hand to her mouth.

Noah looked up.

“Daddy?””

Victor immediately crouched.

“I'm here, buddy.””

“Am I going to be gone?””

The question broke something inside him.

“No,” Victor said.

“You are not going anywhere without people making sure you're safe.””

Noah's eyes searched his face.

“Promise?””

Victor took both of his hands.

“I promise I'll do everything I can to protect you.””

He didn't say the words lightly.

For months, he had accepted Vanessa's explanations about his son.

Noah was difficult. Noah was spoiled. Noah was struggling with grief after losing his mother. Noah needed stricter rules.

Every time Victor questioned something, Vanessa supplied a reasonable explanation wrapped in concern.

She had learned exactly which fears to touch.

And he had let her.

The realization made him feel sick.

He looked at Danielle.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

His sister's eyes filled.

“I tried.””

“When?””

“Three weeks ago. I called you after I found Noah eating crackers in the laundry room.””

Victor frowned.

“You said he was playing.””

“No. Vanessa told you that. I told you he said he wasn't allowed in the kitchen.””

Victor remembered the call.

He remembered Vanessa sitting beside him on the couch afterward, her head resting against his shoulder while she explained that Danielle had always been overprotective.

He had believed his wife.

Danielle wiped her cheek.

“I should have pushed harder. I know that. But I never thought she'd go this far.””

Vanessa let out a sharp laugh.

“Wonderful. A family reunion where everyone gets to rewrite history.””

Officer Coleman turned toward her.

“Ma'am, we need you to stop interrupting.””

Vanessa's hands trembled at her sides.

Then she noticed Marcus Bell standing beside the dining-room entrance.

“You,” she said.

Marcus straightened.

“What?””

“You were outside with Victor. You saw nothing.””

“I heard Noah crying.””

“You heard a child crying at a party. That doesn't make you an expert on my household.””

“No,” Marcus replied.

“But I watched you try to grab that recorder.””

Vanessa stared at him.

Marcus continued.

“And I watched you tell your husband that his son was manipulating everyone. I don't know what else is on that device, but I know what I saw.””

Vanessa looked around the room.

One by one, the guests lowered their eyes or turned away from her.

Her carefully maintained public image was collapsing in real time.

Yet Victor could not stop thinking about the voice on the recording.

Officer Harris rewound the audio slightly.

“Let's identify the speaker.””

The man's voice played again.

“Are you certain Victor won't suspect anything?””

Victor closed his eyes.

It was unmistakable now.

“Stop,” he said.

Officer Harris paused the recording.

“Do you recognize the voice?””

Victor swallowed.

“Yes.””

“Can you tell us who it belongs to?””

Before Victor could answer, Vanessa spoke.

“You don't need to involve him.””

Victor turned slowly.

“What did you say?””

She pressed her lips together.

“Whoever that is, it has nothing to do with Noah's food.””

“Nothing to do with Noah?””

“Victor, you're upset. You're hearing fragments of a conversation and inventing a conspiracy.””

“Then explain the conversation.””

“I can't explain something I didn't say.””

Officer Harris glanced at the device.

“The recording appears to contain your voice.””

“It could be anyone.””

“You just said it was private.””

Vanessa froze.

Officer Coleman made a brief note on her tablet.

Victor looked at his wife for a long moment.

“You've contradicted yourself four times in five minutes.””

“Because you're interrogating me in front of strangers!””

“I'm trying to understand why someone is planning to remove my son from my family.””

Vanessa's eyes hardened.

“Your son was already destroying this family before I ever arrived.””

The room went still.

Victor stood.

“Get out.””

She stared at him.

“What?””

“You heard me. You will not stand in front of my child and tell him he's responsible for your behavior.””

“You cannot throw me out of my own home!””

“This is my home, too.””

“And I am your wife!””

“You keep saying that as if it excuses everything.””

Her mouth trembled, but her eyes remained cold.

“After everything I've sacrificed for you?””

Victor shook his head.

“I don't even know what you've sacrificed.””

For a moment, Vanessa seemed ready to scream.

Instead, she looked toward the recorder.

“Ask him about the documents.””

Victor frowned.

“What documents?””

She gave a bitter little smile.

“Ask your trusted friend why he was so interested in your son's legal status.””

Officer Harris looked up.

“Which friend?””

Vanessa said nothing.

Victor felt the room tilt around him.

The man on the recording was not a stranger. He was not some mysterious voice from outside the family.

He was a man who had helped Victor navigate the most painful years of his life.

A man who had reviewed the papers following his first wife's death.

A man who knew every detail of the family trust.

A man who had once promised that Noah would never have to worry about money, education, or security.

Victor looked at Officer Harris.

“The voice belongs to my attorney, Richard Cole.””

Danielle's eyes widened.

“Richard? Your personal attorney?””

Victor nodded.

Richard had represented him for eleven years. He had handled property acquisitions, estate planning, and the guardianship arrangements following the death of Noah's mother.

Victor had trusted him with information he had never shared with anyone else.

Officer Coleman wrote down the name.

“Do you know where Mr. Cole is right now?””

Victor glanced at his watch.

“He was supposed to join us this afternoon.””

Vanessa looked down.

Too quickly.

Victor saw it.

“You knew he was coming.””

“I knew several people were invited.””

“Did you arrange to meet him here?””

“No.””

“Then why do you look frightened?””

“Because you're accusing me of a crime in front of everyone I know!””

Victor stepped back.

Officer Harris raised the recorder again.

“We should preserve the original file and avoid making assumptions until it has been examined.””

He turned the device over and inspected a small label on its back.

“There's a timestamp here.””

Victor moved closer.

“What time?””

“Yesterday evening. Approximately 8:40 p.m.””

Danielle frowned.

“Yesterday? But Vanessa told us she was at a charity committee dinner.””

Vanessa immediately looked at her.

“I was.””

Danielle shook her head.

“No, you weren't. I called you at eight. You said you were home preparing for today's party.””

Vanessa's face tightened.

“That was after the dinner.””

“You told me you hadn't left the house.””

“I don't remember every conversation I've had with you.””

Victor looked at Officer Harris.

“Can we hear the rest?””

The officer nodded.

He pressed PLAY.

There was a brief burst of static, then Vanessa's recorded voice.

“Once Victor signs the papers, that boy is out of this family for good.””

Richard's voice answered.

“And if he refuses to sign?””

“He won't.””

“How can you be certain?””

“Because he trusts me.””

Victor's stomach twisted.

The recording continued.

Richard spoke more quietly.

“And the original arrangement?””

Vanessa replied.

“It's already taken care of.””

“What about the other person?””

“I told you. Nobody will know.””

A chair scraped across the recorded floor.

Then Richard asked the question that made Victor's blood run cold.

“And if Noah remembers what happened that night?””

The real Vanessa lunged forward.

“Turn it off!””

Officer Coleman caught her arm before she could reach the device.

“Ma'am, step back.””

Vanessa struggled once, then stopped.

Victor could barely hear his own breathing.

He turned toward his son.

Noah had gone completely still.

His eyes were fixed on the recorder.

His lips moved, but no sound emerged.

Victor knelt beside him.

“Noah? What is it?””

The boy shook his head.

“Nothing.””

“Buddy, you can tell me.””

Noah looked at Vanessa.

Then at the police officers.

Then at his father.

“Daddy,” he whispered, “I remember that night.””

Victor felt every muscle in his body tighten.

“What night?””

Noah's eyes filled with tears.

“The night she told me not to tell you what I saw.””

Vanessa stopped struggling.

For the first time, genuine fear crossed her face.

Victor held his son's trembling hands.

“What did you see, Noah?””

The boy opened his mouth.

Then the front door slammed shut somewhere down the hallway.

Footsteps approached.

A man's familiar voice called from the entrance.

“Victor? I'm sorry I'm late.””

Richard Cole had arrived.

And when he stepped into the bright dining room and saw the police, the recorder, and Noah clinging to his father's jacket, he stopped dead in the doorway.

His eyes went straight to Vanessa.

She stared back at him.

Neither spoke.

But Victor saw the answer in their faces before either of them said a word.

*They had both been expecting this day.*
