The Boy They Tried to Erase / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8: The Car That Was Never Reported

Richard's briefcase slipped from his hand and struck the floor.

The sound was small.

The reaction was not.

Vanessa stepped backward into the dining table. A glass tipped over, sending water across the white tablecloth.

Nobody reached to save it.

Victor stared at his attorney.

“You told the detective you were home.””

“I was.””

Morgan remained calm.

“Your vehicle was recorded near the location where Angela's car was later found.””

“I had no reason to be there.””

“Then help us understand why it was.””

Richard's eyes moved toward the front door.

Officer Harris noticed and shifted position, ensuring the exit remained clear without touching him.

“Mr. Cole,” Harris said, “please remain where you are.””

Richard lifted both hands.

“I'm not going anywhere.””

Victor took a step forward.

“Did you follow my wife?””

“No.””

“Did you meet her that night?””

“No.””

“Did you know she was afraid?””

Richard's mouth tightened.

“Victor, you need to stop asking questions you don't understand.””

Victor stared at him.

“You have spent eleven years telling me that exact sentence whenever I got too close to something you didn't want me to see.””

Richard's face reddened.

“That's not fair.””

“Neither was making my son believe his mother abandoned him.””

Richard looked toward Noah.

For an instant, his expression seemed almost apologetic.

Then it disappeared.

“Children are impressionable,” he said.

“You cannot build an accusation on a child's recollection of something that happened two years ago.””

Noah recoiled.

Victor moved between them.

“Don't talk about him as though he's a problem to manage.””

Morgan raised a hand.

“Let's keep this focused. Mr. Cole, do you acknowledge that the vehicle was registered to you?””

“Yes.””

“Do you acknowledge that you knew Angela?””

“Of course. I was her attorney, too.””

“Then you understand why we're asking questions.””

Richard rubbed his forehead.

“I understand perfectly.””

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“Richard wasn't there.””

Everyone turned toward her.

She swallowed.

“He wasn't at the house that night. He was with me.””

Richard stared at her.

Victor felt the room tilt again.

“With you where?”” Morgan asked.

Vanessa pressed her lips together.

Richard's voice dropped.

“Vanessa, don't.””

She spun toward him.

“Don't what? You told me you would handle this!””

Morgan stepped between them.

“Mrs. Romano, please explain what you mean.””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“We met at a restaurant that evening.””

Richard closed his eyes.

Victor stared at his wife.

“You told me you were home.””

“I was going to explain.””

“When?””

She didn't answer.

Morgan continued.

“What restaurant?””

Vanessa named an upscale establishment across town.

“Was anyone else with you?””

“No.””

“Did you leave together?””

“No. Richard left first.””

Richard shook his head.

“That is not what happened.””

Vanessa turned on him.

“You said you'd protect me!””

“I said nothing of the kind.””

“You said the documents would make everything disappear!””

Officer Coleman moved closer.

“Please stop speaking over one another.””

Morgan looked at Victor.

“Do you know whether your wife and Mr. Cole were in contact around that time?””

Victor shook his head.

“They handled some estate matters together. Vanessa told me Richard was helping her organize household paperwork.””

Richard's face tightened.

“That's a normal arrangement.””

“Was the trust one of those matters?”” Morgan asked.

Richard hesitated.

“Yes.””

“Did you prepare the amended instructions?””

“I would need to examine the document.””

Morgan gave him a hard look.

“You've already said that twice. Yet you knew Angela was investigating the trust before she died.””

Richard said nothing.

Morgan turned toward Officer Harris.

“Please make a note of the vehicle information and preserve the existing evidence. We'll need to coordinate a formal review of the original collision file.””

Harris nodded.

Victor looked at the photograph of Angela.

The woman in the image had been afraid.

And he had been too busy to notice.

He approached the window and stared into the garden.

“Why would she go to that industrial road?”” he asked.

Morgan joined him.

“We don't know yet.””

“Was she meeting someone?””

“Possibly.””

“Could it have been the man Noah saw?””

“Possibly.””

Victor turned.

“You keep saying possibly.””

“Because I won't give you a false answer just to make the uncertainty easier to bear.””

The detective's honesty hurt, but Victor respected it.

Morgan continued.

“What I can tell you is that the original investigation left questions unanswered. We're reviewing those questions now.””

Victor looked toward Noah.

The boy had curled into Danielle's side, his small fingers wrapped around the napkin.

“Can I ask you something?”” Victor said.

“Of course.””

“If someone hurt Angela, would they come after Noah?””

Morgan took a moment before answering.

“I don't have evidence that anyone intends to harm your son. But given what we've learned today, I recommend that you treat his safety seriously and let the appropriate authorities help you make arrangements.””

Victor nodded.

“I will.””

Then Richard spoke from behind them.

“You're all acting as though Angela was innocent.””

Victor turned slowly.

“What did you say?””

Richard's jaw worked.

“She wasn't the helpless victim everyone remembers. She was making plans that could have damaged the company, the trust, and your future.””

Morgan faced him.

“What plans?””

Richard looked at Vanessa.

She shook her head, almost imperceptibly.

But he had already begun.

“Angela discovered that funds were being moved between accounts. She believed the transfers were unauthorized. She threatened to report them.””

Victor's voice hardened.

“Were they unauthorized?””

“I can't answer that without reviewing the records.””

“Did you move the money?””

“No.””

“Did Vanessa?””

Richard looked away.

Vanessa gave a sharp cry.

“Don't you dare put this on me!””

Morgan raised his voice just enough to command the room.

“Both of you, stop.””

The room fell silent.

He looked at Richard.

“Who had authority over the accounts?””

“Victor had ultimate authority. I managed the legal structure. Certain expenses could be approved through the family office.””

“And Vanessa?””

“She was not a trustee.””

Victor frowned.

“Then why did she have access to the documents?””

Richard didn't answer.

Danielle spoke from beside Noah.

“Because Vanessa kept telling Victor that she was helping him.””

Vanessa rounded on her.

“You know nothing about our marriage!””

“I know what I saw today.””

Richard suddenly bent to retrieve his briefcase.

Officer Harris stepped forward.

“Leave it where it is, please.””

Richard straightened.

“I need my phone.””

“You may request it through the officers handling the matter.””

“This is ridiculous.””

Morgan's expression remained flat.

“Mr. Cole, no one is preventing you from seeking legal advice. But you will not remove potentially relevant materials while we're documenting the situation.””

Richard's hands curled into fists.

Then he did something unexpected.

He looked directly at Victor.

“Do you remember the night you signed the original trust?””

Victor frowned.

“Yes.””

“Do you remember what Angela asked you to include?””

Victor thought back.

The office. The rain against the windows. Angela sitting beside him with a stack of papers.

He remembered signing documents after a long day, trusting Richard to explain the technical details.

“She wanted Noah protected,” Victor said.

Richard nodded.

“Specifically, she wanted any change to his guardianship or beneficial interest to require your direct consent and independent legal review.””

Victor's stomach tightened.

“Then why did you prepare a document that could transfer his guardianship?””

“Because the circumstances changed.””

“What circumstances?””

Richard looked at Vanessa.

She whispered, “Don't.””

He ignored her.

“Angela had included a clause that made it difficult for anyone to change the trust without independent verification. After her death, we reviewed the arrangements.””

Victor stared.

“You told me nothing needed changing.””

“I said the existing arrangements were adequate.””

“Then why was a new document created?””

Richard's face darkened.

“Because someone wanted control of the trust.””

Vanessa's voice rose.

“Richard!””

Morgan stepped toward her.

“Mrs. Romano, stay where you are.””

Victor looked at Richard.

“Who?””

Richard opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

His eyes moved toward the hallway.

The same hallway through which the guests had entered earlier.

Victor followed his gaze.

“What are you looking at?””

Richard whispered, “He wasn't supposed to be here.””

Morgan turned immediately.

“Who wasn't?””

Before Richard could answer, a man's voice came from the entrance.

“Is everyone all right?””

A tall Black American man in a dark jacket stood inside the front doorway.

He looked to be in his forties. His expression was calm, almost friendly, and he carried a slim leather folder under one arm.

Victor didn't recognize him.

But Noah did.

The boy made a strangled sound and scrambled backward, knocking his chair against the wall.

“No!””

Danielle grabbed him before he could fall.

Victor rushed to his son.

“What's wrong, buddy?””

Noah pointed at the stranger with a shaking hand.

“That's him!””

The man's expression changed.

“I'm sorry?””

Noah clung to Victor.

“That's the man outside Mommy's window!””

Every officer in the room moved at once.

Morgan stepped toward the stranger.

“Sir, stop where you are and keep your hands visible.””

The man obeyed.

“Of course, Detective.””

Victor stared at him.

“You know Detective Morgan?””

The stranger smiled faintly.

“We've met.””

Morgan's face hardened.

“Not here to my knowledge.””

The man looked toward Richard.

Then Vanessa.

Then Victor.

“My name is Adrian Shaw,” he said.

“I'm here regarding the Romano family trust.””

Victor's blood ran cold.

“Who sent you?””

Adrian opened his folder.

“Your late wife's instructions.””

He placed a single sheet of paper on the entrance table.

At the top was Angela's name.

Beneath it was a handwritten sentence.

*If Adrian comes to the house, do not let Richard leave with the documents.*

Richard lunged toward the paper.

Officer Harris blocked him.

May you like

Adrian's friendly expression disappeared.

And for the first time, Victor understood that the stranger who had frightened his son might not have been the person Angela feared most.
