Chapter 6: The Children Nobody Remembered

The search of Rick Carter’s property lasted all night.

By morning, Sarah felt like she had aged ten years.

Every room revealed another piece of a nightmare.

Not the kind people imagined.

Not something obvious.

That would have been easier.

Rick’s world was built on normal appearances.

A clean house.

A respectable job history.

A polite smile.

The kind of image neighbors defended.

Until they saw what was behind the walls.

The basement wasn’t the only hidden place.

There was a storage area behind a false wall in the garage.

Inside were boxes.

Photographs.

Documents.

Bracelets.

Names.

Sarah stood there staring at the evidence.

Children reduced to paperwork.

Lives turned into files.

Martinez walked beside her.

“We’re going to need more investigators.””

Sarah nodded.

“How many?””

He looked at the boxes.

“I don’t know.””

That answer scared her more than any number.

Because it meant they had only found the beginning.

A forensic team worked quietly around them.

Sarah returned to the station just before noon.

Noah was waiting.

The second he saw her, he stood.

“Did you find Lily?””

Sarah nodded.

“Yes.””

His shoulders dropped.

“She’s okay?””

“She’s safe.””

For the first time, Noah smiled.

A real smile.

Small.

But real.

“She was scared.””

“I know.””

“She doesn’t like dark rooms.””

Sarah sat down.

“Neither do you.””

Noah looked away.

“I used to.””

The words caught Sarah.

“What changed?””

He was quiet for a moment.

“Rick told me I wasn’t supposed to be afraid.””

Sarah frowned.

“What did he say?””

“That fear meant I was weak.””

Sarah looked at the child in front of her.

A child who had run through a storm barefoot.

A child who remembered things adults tried to bury.

“Noah.””

He looked up.

“You were never weak.””

His eyes watered.

“My mom said that.””

Sarah felt something tighten in her chest.

“What else did your mom say?””

Noah thought.

“She said people who hurt others always make themselves look innocent.””

Sarah nodded slowly.

Danielle Brooks had known.

She had been trying to fight.

And she had failed.

But she had left her son something important.

The truth.

Later that afternoon, Sarah and Martinez sat through the first official evidence review.

The list was devastating.

Multiple identities.

Multiple locations.

Multiple missing children connected to Rick Carter.

But there was one problem.

They still couldn’t prove everything.

Rick had prepared for that.

The documents were incomplete.

The records were damaged.

The evidence was scattered.

“He planned this,” Martinez said.

Sarah looked at the files.

“Yes.””

“He knew how to disappear.””

Sarah shook her head.

“No.””

Martinez looked at her.

“He didn’t disappear.””

She pointed at the evidence.

“He stayed.””

That was the part that frightened her most.

Rick didn’t run because he believed he could still control the story.

He had spent years convincing people he was the victim.

That he was the protector.

That children were the problem.

Sarah’s phone rang.

She answered.

“Mitchell.””

A man’s voice came through.

“Officer.””

Sarah recognized it immediately.

Rick.

Her entire body went still.

“How did you get this number?””

A quiet laugh.

“You’re asking the wrong question.””

“Where are you?””

“Safe.””

Sarah tightened her grip.

“You’re done.””

“No.””

Rick’s voice was calm.

“You’re finally seeing the beginning.””

Sarah looked around the room.

“Why are you calling me?””

A pause.

Then:

“Because Noah remembers.””

Sarah didn’t speak.

Rick continued.

“And because he remembers where Danielle hid the real evidence.””

Her heart dropped.

“What evidence?””

Silence.

Then Rick whispered:

“The evidence that proves I didn’t take those children.””

Sarah stared at the phone.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“I expect you to ask Noah what he forgot.””

The call ended.

Sarah slowly lowered the phone.

Martinez looked at her.

“What did he say?””

Sarah looked toward the room where Noah was sitting.

For the first time, she wondered if Rick was lying.

Or if he was telling the truth in the only way a dangerous person could.

By mixing it with another lie.

She walked toward Noah.

Because there was one question she needed answered.

A question that could change everything.

“What did your mother hide from Rick?”” she asked.

Noah looked confused.

Then afraid.

“I don’t know.””

Sarah sat beside him.

“Try to remember.””

The boy closed his eyes.

For a long moment, nothing happened.

Then his face changed.

And he whispered:

“She hid it where the river ends.””

Sarah felt her breath catch.

Because she knew exactly what that meant.

The river.

The blue house.

May you like

The missing evidence.

And somewhere out there, Rick Carter was waiting for them to find it.
