Chapter 8: The Memory He Buried

The human mind is strange.

Sarah knew that from years of working with victims.

Sometimes memories protected people.

Sometimes they punished them.

Sometimes the brain locked away the worst moments until the person was strong enough to survive them.

Noah sat in the interview room with a blanket around his shoulders.

The lights were low.

The door was open.

Sarah wanted him to know he could leave.

He wasn’t trapped.

Not anymore.

“Noah,” she said softly.

He looked up.

“I need to ask you something.””

“About Rick?””

“Yes.””

The boy looked down.

“I don’t want to remember.””

Sarah’s heart hurt.

“I know.””

“What if it’s bad?””

Sarah leaned forward.

“Then we face it together.””

He looked at her.

“You promise?””

“I promise.””

Noah took a deep breath.

Then he closed his eyes.

“At first, Rick was nice.””

Sarah listened.

“He brought me toys.””

A pause.

“He called me his little man.””

Noah’s fingers tightened around the blanket.

“Then my mom started crying.””

“Why?””

“Because she found papers.””

“What papers?””

“I don’t know.””

Sarah glanced at Martinez.

He was recording everything.

“She said Rick had another name.””

Noah opened his eyes.

“Marcus.””

Sarah nodded.

“Keep going.””

“She told me we had to leave.””

“When?””

“The night before.””

Noah swallowed.

“She packed bags.””

Sarah felt the tension building.

“But Rick came home.””

The boy’s voice got smaller.

“He knew.””

“How?””

“I don’t know.””

“Then what happened?””

Noah stared at the floor.

“He got angry.””

“Did he hurt you?””

The boy shook his head.

“He didn’t hit me.””

Sarah waited.

“He did something worse.””

The room became silent.

“He told my mom nobody would believe her.””

Noah’s voice trembled.

“He said he knew how people worked.””

Sarah felt cold.

“He said everyone believed the person who looked normal.””

Martinez looked away.

Because they both knew.

That was exactly how Rick survived.

Noah continued.

“He locked me downstairs.””

“How long?””

“I don’t know.””

“Days?””

He nodded.

Sarah’s chest tightened.

“And then?””

“He told me my name was Noah.””

“Why?””

“Because Elijah was gone.””

Sarah froze.

“What do you mean?””

“He said Elijah died.””

Noah looked confused.

“But I was Elijah.””

The pain in his voice was unbearable.

“I knew I was.””

Sarah moved closer.

“You survived.””

Noah nodded.

“Then my mom came back.””

Sarah looked up.

“She came back?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“I don’t know.””

Noah rubbed his eyes.

“She opened the door.””

Sarah stopped.

“What door?””

“The basement.””

Everyone went still.

“She said we had to run.””

Sarah leaned forward.

“Did you?””

Noah shook his head.

“Rick found us.””

The room felt heavier.

“What happened?””

Noah looked terrified.

“He took my mom away.””

Sarah’s voice softened.

“Where?””

“The river.””

A silence followed.

Sarah knew.

Danielle’s accident.

The river.

The missing woman.

The official story.

All of it.

A lie.

Noah whispered:

“She told me to hide.””

“Where?””

“In the blue house.””

Sarah felt tears forming.

“He left me there.””

“But you escaped.””

Noah nodded.

“Someone found me.””

“Who?””

The boy looked confused.

“I don’t know.””

Sarah looked at Martinez.

That detail wasn’t in any report.

“Someone helped you?””

Noah nodded.

“A woman.””

“What woman?””

Noah closed his eyes.

Then whispered:

“Danielle.””

Sarah stopped breathing.

“What?””

“My mom.””

Martinez stared.

“That’s impossible.””

Noah shook his head.

“She wasn’t dead.””

The room went silent.

A missing mother.

A false death record.

A child erased.

Sarah stood slowly.

Because suddenly the entire case changed.

Danielle Brooks hadn’t disappeared because Rick destroyed the evidence.

She disappeared because she was still hiding.

And if Noah was right…

Then Danielle might still be alive.

At that exact moment, Martinez’s phone rang.

He answered.

Then his face changed.

Sarah immediately knew.

“What?””

He looked at her.

“We cracked the flash drive.””

“And?””

He swallowed.

“There’s one video file.””

Sarah stepped closer.

“Play it.””

The screen turned on.

Static.

Then an image appeared.

A woman sitting in a dark room.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Danielle Brooks looked directly into the camera.

And whispered:

“If you found this, Rick knows.””

She took a shaky breath.

“My son is alive.””

Sarah felt her heart stop.

Danielle continued:

“And the man pretending to be Noah’s father is not the only person involved.””

The video flickered.

Then Danielle said the words that changed everything.

May you like

“Rick had help.””

The screen went black.
