Chapter 6: The Shadow Behind the Door
When Darius returned home, Micah ran to him.
That simple action nearly brought him to his knees.
“Daddy!””
The little boy jumped into his arms.
A few weeks ago, Darius would have smiled, hugged him, and moved on.
Now he held on longer.
Because he understood something he never had before.
Children remember who makes them feel safe.
Not who buys them things.
Not who gives the biggest gifts.
Who stays.
“I missed you,” Micah said.
Darius kissed the top of his head.
“I missed you too.””
Micah looked over his shoulder.
“Did you find the bad person?””
Darius paused.
He looked at Naomi.
Then back at his son.
“We’re still finding answers.””
Micah frowned.
“Are they coming back?””
The fear was there again.
Small.
Quiet.
Waiting.
Darius knelt.
“I promise you this. No matter what happens, you are not alone.””
Micah studied him.
“You promise?””
Darius almost gave the old answer.
I promise I’ll never leave.
But he stopped.
Because Naomi had taught him something.
Promises mattered when they were honest.
“I promise I will keep showing up.””
Micah nodded.
That was enough.
That night, Darius reviewed every document Lena had given him.
Then he found something.
A name.
Buried in an old employment record.
Marcus Vale.
Former financial consultant.
Former advisor to the Cole family.
And someone Darius had fired three years earlier.
The reason?
Suspicious withdrawals.
At the time, Darius thought Marcus had simply been careless.
Now he wasn’t sure.
He called security.
“Find Marcus Vale.””
The response came quickly.
“We’re already looking.””
“Already?””
A pause.
Then:
“Sir, there’s something you need to see.””
A file appeared on his computer.
A photo.
Marcus.
Standing outside the Cole estate.
Yesterday.
Darius stared at the screen.
“How long has he been there?””
“We don’t know.””
That answer was unacceptable.
But before Darius could respond, another alert appeared.
Motion detected.
Inside the house.
Darius stood immediately.
The security team moved.
Naomi grabbed his arm.
“Don’t.””
He looked at her.
“What?””
“Think.””
She pointed toward the screen.
“If someone wanted to hurt you, they wouldn’t send one person into a house full of guards.””
Darius understood.
A distraction.
Someone wanted them looking in one direction.
While something else happened somewhere else.
Then he heard it.
A sound.
Upstairs.
A small voice.
“Daddy?””
His blood turned cold.
Micah.
He ran.
The hallway seemed longer than it had ever been.
When he reached the bedroom, Micah was standing beside the window.
The window was open.
A piece of paper sat on the floor.
Darius rushed to his son.
“Are you okay?””
Micah nodded, scared.
“I heard someone.””
Security flooded the room.
The paper was picked up carefully.
Only one sentence was written.
YOU CAN’T PROTECT HIM FROM EVERYONE.
Darius stared at the message.
Then he looked at Micah.
And something changed.
The fear he felt became something stronger.
Determination.
Whoever was behind this believed Darius could be controlled.
They believed threatening his son would make him weak.
They were wrong.
Because before, Darius Cole had fought to protect his empire.
Now he was fighting to protect his family.
And he was done playing defense.
The next morning, he made one call.
A call he never thought he would make.
To someone from his past.
Someone who knew every enemy Darius had ever made.
Someone who knew exactly who would want revenge.
And when that person answered, their first words were:
“Darius, I was wondering when you’d finally realize this wasn’t about the money.””
Darius gripped the phone.
“What is it about?””
A pause.
May you like
Then the answer:
“Your son.””
