Chapter 7: The Enemy He Never Saw

Darius Cole had spent his life learning how to recognize threats.

He could read a dishonest investor from across a conference table. He could tell when a business partner was preparing to betray him. He knew the difference between someone asking for help and someone looking for an opportunity.

But the one person he never suspected was the person who knew exactly where to hide.

“Say that again,” Darius said into the phone.

The voice on the other end belonged to Andre Whitmore.

Celeste’s younger brother.

Years ago, Andre had worked as one of Darius’s financial advisors. He had been intelligent, ambitious, and hungry for recognition. But he had also been reckless.

Darius remembered the day he fired him.

Andre had approved several questionable transactions and blamed everyone around him when the numbers didn’t add up.

“You think this is about money,” Andre said.

“That’s always been your problem.””

Darius walked toward the window of his office.

“My son was threatened.””

“I know.””

The answer made his blood run cold.

“You know?””

A pause.

Then Andre sighed.

“Darius, you really didn’t see it, did you?””

“See what?””

“How easy it was to get close to you.””

Darius tightened his grip on the phone.

“Where are you?””

“I’m not the one you should be asking about.””

“Then who?””

Andre was quiet.

And that silence told Darius everything.

There was someone else.

Someone bigger.

Someone who had been moving pieces while everyone else was distracted.

“I’m listening,” Darius said.

Andre took a breath.

“Celeste was never trying to steal from Micah’s account.””

Darius frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

“She was using the money as a cover.””

The room seemed to grow colder.

“What cover?””

“To create a pattern.””

Darius said nothing.

Andre continued.

“Every caregiver who left. Every incident report. Every complaint about Micah’s behavior.

It wasn’t just about money. Someone was building evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

“That you were an unfit father.””

The words hit harder than Darius expected.

Andre explained that the false records, the caregiver replacements, and the emotional manipulation were creating a story.

A story that painted Darius as a powerful man who neglected his child.

A man who was too distracted by business to notice what happened at home.

A man who needed someone else to take control.

Darius felt sick.

“Someone wanted custody.””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Andre hesitated.

Then he said the name.

“Vivian Cole.””

Darius froze.

His own sister.

For a moment, he said nothing.

The memories came rushing back.

Vivian had always believed Darius got lucky.

She had told him for years that their family name belonged to everyone, not just him.

When their parents died, Darius built the company from nothing.

Vivian believed she deserved more.

But wanting money was one thing.

Targeting his son was something else.

“No,” Darius whispered.

Andre’s voice became quieter.

“I know what you’re thinking.””

“She wouldn’t hurt Micah.””

“Maybe not physically.””

Darius closed his eyes.

Because that was the frightening part.

The people who caused the deepest wounds didn’t always use violence.

Sometimes they used words.

Sometimes they used trust.

Sometimes they convinced a child that nobody loved him.

Darius ended the call and immediately contacted security.

“Find my sister.””

Within an hour, they had an answer.

Vivian was not hiding.

She was attending a charity event downtown.

Smiling.

Giving speeches.

Acting like nothing was wrong.

That angered Darius more than if she had run.

Because it meant she believed she had done nothing wrong.

When he arrived, cameras flashed.

People recognized him immediately.

The powerful businessman.

The billionaire.

The man everyone admired.

But Darius wasn’t there for appearances.

He found Vivian near the entrance.

She looked surprised.

“Darius.””

Her smile faded when she saw his expression.

“What happened?””

“You tell me.””

She looked around.

“Not here.””

“No.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“You wanted this, didn’t you?””

Vivian’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””

“You used Celeste.””

“She worked for you.””

“You convinced her to manipulate my son.””

Vivian’s eyes hardened.

“I convinced her to protect him.””

Darius stared.

“Protect him?””

“Yes.””

She stepped closer.

“You think money fixes everything. You think hiring people fixes everything. You built an empire and forgot the most important thing.””

“My son.””

“Yes.””

Her voice sharpened.

“You were never there.””

The words hurt because they came from family.

But Darius refused to let them become an excuse.

“You could have talked to me.””

“And would you have listened?””

He didn’t answer.

Because maybe once upon a time, he wouldn’t have.

Vivian saw his silence and continued.

“I watched you become exactly like our father.””

That sentence stopped him.

“You were so afraid of being poor again that you forgot people aren’t businesses.””

Darius looked at her.

“And your solution was to destroy my son’s trust?””

Vivian looked away.

“I didn’t know Celeste would go that far.””

The admission was enough.

Darius stepped back.

Because there it was.

Not denial.

Not shock.

Guilt.

“You knew.””

Vivian’s eyes filled with emotion.

“I wanted you to understand what it felt like to lose control.””

Darius shook his head.

“You used a child to punish me.””

“I wanted you to wake up.””

“No.””

His voice lowered.

“You wanted me to suffer.””

The silence between them said everything.

Security approached.

Vivian looked at him.

“You’re really going to do this?””

Darius looked toward the street.

For years, he had protected his family’s image.

Covered mistakes.

Kept problems private.

But Micah had spent years suffering because adults cared more about appearances than truth.

“No more secrets,” Darius said.

And for the first time, Vivian looked afraid.
