Chapter 6: The Shadow Behind the Secret
The room stayed silent long after the final sentence was read.
*I was trying to protect her from someone who wanted her gone.*
The words seemed impossible.
Evelyn stared at the letter.
Then at Claire.
Then back at the letter.
Her mind searched through forty-three years of memories, trying to find the missing piece.
A conversation.
A strange phone call.
A moment when Robert seemed worried.
Anything.
But nothing appeared.
Because Robert had been good at hiding fear.
He had always been the calm one.
When their roof leaked during a storm, he climbed onto the roof himself.
When their son was sick, he sat awake all night beside the bed.
When Evelyn cried after losing her sister, he held her without saying a word.
Robert had always been the person who made the world feel safe.
And now she was learning he had spent years afraid.
“Who was it?”” Evelyn asked.
Her voice was low.
Claire looked down.
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
Claire shook her head.
“My father never told me the name.””
Evelyn looked confused.
“Why would he hide it from you?””
Claire took a breath.
“Because he thought knowing would put me in more danger.””
The answer made Evelyn angry.
Not at Claire.
At Robert.
“Everyone kept secrets to protect everyone else,” Evelyn said.
Her voice trembled.
“But nobody protected me from the truth.””
Claire looked at her.
“I’m sorry.””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
She wanted to be angry.
She wanted to blame someone.
But looking at Claire made it difficult.
Because Claire had been hurt too.
Both of them had been left with pieces of a story they never asked to inherit.
Daniel quietly stood near the door.
“Mrs. Brooks?””
Evelyn opened her eyes.
“Yes?””
“There’s something else.””
She looked at him.
“What?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Before Mr. Brooks passed away, he asked me to do something.””
“What?””
“He asked me to watch for anyone asking questions about the Evelyn Brooks Legacy Collection.””
Evelyn frowned.
“Questions?””
“Yes.””
“Who would ask?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“I don’t know.””
Claire suddenly looked up.
“Wait.””
Everyone turned toward her.
“What?””
Claire’s face had changed.
Like she remembered something she had tried to forget.
“My mother received letters.””
Evelyn looked at her.
“What kind of letters?””
Claire’s hands tightened.
“Threatening ones.””
The room became still.
“When?””
“When I was younger.””
“How young?””
Claire swallowed.
“Ten.””
Evelyn’s expression softened.
“You were only ten.””
Claire nodded.
“My mother didn’t show me at first. She hid them.””
“Do you remember what they said?””
Claire looked away.
“Some of them.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“What did they say?””
Claire hesitated.
Then:
“They said Robert needed to forget us.””
Evelyn felt a chill.
“Who sent them?””
“We never knew.””
“Did Robert know?””
Claire nodded.
“Yes.””
“When?””
“When I was sixteen.””
Evelyn looked at her.
“That was when your mother told you about him?””
“Yes.””
Claire touched the old photograph.
“She told me because she was scared.””
“Scared of what?””
Claire looked at Evelyn.
“That someone had found us again.””
The words hung in the room.
Evelyn slowly sat down.
Suddenly, the bracelet made sense.
The secrecy.
The instructions.
The hidden accounts.
Robert wasn’t hiding Claire because he was ashamed.
He was hiding her because someone else was searching.
But who?
Daniel walked toward the conference table.
“I need to make a call.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“To whom?””
“The private security team.””
“Security?””
“Yes.””
“Daniel, this is my husband’s secret. Not a crime scene.””
Daniel’s expression was serious.
“Mrs. Brooks, your husband was one of the most careful people I knew.””
He pointed toward the letter.
“He didn’t create this much protection because of family drama.””
Claire looked nervous.
“What are you saying?””
Daniel answered quietly.
“I’m saying your father believed someone was dangerous.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Claire’s phone rang.
The sound was sharp in the quiet room.
She looked at the screen.
Her face changed.
Evelyn noticed.
“Who is it?””
Claire didn’t answer.
The phone kept ringing.
Finally, she turned the screen toward them.
No name.
No number.
Just:
*UNKNOWN CALLER*
Daniel immediately stood.
“Don’t answer.””
Claire looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because whoever this is may know exactly where you are.””
The ringing stopped.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then a message appeared.
Claire looked at the screen.
She shouldn’t have.
Everyone knew it.
But she did.
Her eyes scanned the words.
Then her face went pale.
“What does it say?”” Evelyn asked.
Claire didn’t respond.
“Claire.””
Slowly, Claire handed her the phone.
Evelyn read the message.
And her heart dropped.
*You should have stayed hidden.*
A second message appeared.
*Your father failed to protect you.*
Evelyn’s hands began shaking.
Then a third message.
*Now we finish what he started.*
The room changed instantly.
Daniel took the phone.
“We need to leave.””
Claire stood.
“Who is this?””
“I don’t know.””
“Then how do they know where I am?””
Nobody answered.
Because that was the question everyone was afraid of.
How?
Daniel moved quickly.
“Mrs. Brooks, did anyone know you were coming here?””
Evelyn shook her head.
“Only Diamond House.””
Daniel looked toward the door.
“And the attorney.””
Claire looked terrified.
“Are you saying someone inside knows?””
“I’m saying we don’t know who knows.””
They left the conference room.
The receptionist looked up.
Daniel gave her a serious look.
“Did anyone ask about Mrs. Brooks today?””
The woman hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
“Someone called earlier.””
Evelyn stopped.
“Who?””
The receptionist looked nervous.
“I don’t know.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“What did they ask?””
She swallowed.
“They asked if Claire Bennett had arrived.””
Claire froze.
The world seemed to tilt.
“They knew my name?””
The receptionist nodded.
“Yes.””
Evelyn looked at Claire.
Then Daniel.
Someone was watching.
Someone knew Claire was coming.
Someone knew about Robert’s secret.
As they rushed toward the exit, Evelyn noticed something on the reception desk.
A small envelope.
Her name written across it.
She stopped.
“Wait.””
Daniel turned.
“What?””
She pointed.
“That wasn’t there before.””
Nobody moved.
The envelope sat quietly.
Waiting.
Like it had been placed there moments ago.
Daniel approached carefully.
“Don’t touch it.””
But Evelyn already knew.
She knew Robert’s handwriting.
Even from a distance.
Her face changed.
“That’s from him.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Mrs. Brooks…”
She stepped closer.
The envelope had only three words written on it.
Not her name.
Not Claire’s.
Just a warning.
*Do not trust him.*
Evelyn stared.
“Who is ‘him’?””
Nobody answered.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
He checked the screen.
His expression changed.
“What?””
A pause.
Then his face turned serious.
“Are you sure?””
Evelyn watched him.
“What happened?””
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
His voice was barely above a whisper.
“The security footage.””
“What about it?””
Daniel looked at Claire.
“Someone entered the Diamond House private office last night.””
Evelyn felt cold.
“Who?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then he said:
“It was someone with authorized access.””
A silence followed.
Because that meant only one thing.
The person who had been searching for Claire…
May you like
Was not a stranger.
It was someone close enough to open every locked door.
