Chapter 7: The Person Behind the Locked Door

Nobody spoke.

The words stayed between them.

*Someone with authorized access.*

It should have been impossible.

Diamond House had strict security.

Private accounts were protected.

The legacy collection was hidden behind layers of procedures that only a few trusted people could bypass.

But someone had walked into the private office.

Someone who knew exactly where to look.

Someone who knew Claire was coming.

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

“Who has access?””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“There are only a handful of people.””

“Names.””

He hesitated.

Evelyn noticed.

“Daniel.””

The manager took a breath.

“Senior management. Private account directors. Legal representatives.””

Claire stepped closer.

“And my father?””

Daniel nodded.

“Of course.””

Her expression changed.

“He’s dead.””

“Yes.””

“So someone else has access.””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

Evelyn looked at the envelope on the desk.

*Do not trust him.*

The message felt heavier now.

Not because of the words.

Because of the possibility that Robert had known exactly what would happen.

“He left this for me,” Evelyn whispered.

Daniel looked at the envelope.

“Maybe.””

She turned.

“Maybe?””

“Mrs. Brooks, if someone else placed this here…”

He didn’t finish.

He didn’t need to.

Because everyone understood.

The warning might not have come from Robert.

Someone could be using Robert’s handwriting.

Someone could be manipulating them.

Someone could be trying to control what they believed.

Claire looked terrified.

“What do we do?””

Evelyn looked at her.

For the first time, she saw Claire not as a secret.

Not as a reminder of Robert’s betrayal.

But as a woman who had spent her whole life running from something she couldn’t name.

“We find the truth,” Evelyn said.

Claire stared.

“You’re not angry?””

Evelyn was quiet.

“I am.””

The honesty surprised Claire.

“I’m angry at your father.””

A pause.

“Not at you.””

Claire’s eyes filled.

Evelyn continued.

“You were a child. You didn’t create this.””

Claire looked down.

“I still feel like I’m the reason everyone got hurt.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice became firmer.

“Secrets hurt people. Children don’t.””

The sentence stayed with Claire.

Maybe because nobody had ever said it to her before.

Daniel took the envelope carefully.

“We need to know where this came from.””

He examined it.

“No fingerprints we can see.””

“Can we trace it?”” Claire asked.

“Possibly.””

Daniel looked toward the exit.

“But we shouldn’t stay here.””

They moved quickly.

The city outside felt different now.

Before, it had been normal.

Now every passing car felt suspicious.

Every stranger walking by seemed like someone watching.

Evelyn sat in the car beside Claire.

Neither woman spoke for several minutes.

Finally, Claire broke the silence.

“Do you hate him?””

Evelyn looked out the window.

“Robert?””

Claire nodded.

The question was difficult.

Because the answer wasn’t simple.

“I don’t know.””

Claire looked surprised.

Evelyn continued.

“I loved him for forty-three years.””

She touched her wedding ring.

“That doesn’t disappear because I learned something painful.””

Claire looked down.

“But he lied.””

“Yes.””

“And you can still love someone who lied?””

Evelyn gave a sad smile.

“Yes.””

“Doesn’t that make it easier for people to hurt you?””

Evelyn looked at her.

“No.””

She paused.

“It makes me human.””

Claire looked away.

A tear slipped down her cheek.

“I spent my whole life wondering why he didn’t choose me.””

Evelyn’s expression softened.

“And now?””

Claire wiped her face.

“Now I wonder why he thought he couldn’t choose both.””

Evelyn understood that pain.

Because she had the same question.

Why did Robert believe love required silence?

Why did he carry a burden alone?

Why did he decide for everyone else what they could handle?

The car stopped outside Daniel’s private office.

Inside, he immediately began reviewing records.

Claire sat at the table.

Evelyn stood near the window.

She watched the city below.

A world full of people who were all carrying hidden stories.

“Mrs. Brooks.””

She turned.

Daniel held a file.

“I found something.””

Claire stood immediately.

“What?””

Daniel placed the file down.

“The person who accessed the private office.””

Evelyn walked closer.

“Who?””

Daniel opened the document.

The answer was there.

A name.

A name that none of them expected.

Claire frowned.

“I don’t know him.””

Daniel looked at her.

“That’s because he wasn’t looking for you.””

The room went quiet.

Evelyn looked at the name.

“Then who was he looking for?””

Daniel turned the page.

“The records show he accessed your husband’s personal files.””

Evelyn felt a chill.

“My husband’s files?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Instead, he removed another document.

“This was attached.””

It was an old account transfer record.

Evelyn looked at it.

The date was twenty-seven years earlier.

Her eyes widened.

“That’s the year Robert opened the legacy account.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Claire leaned closer.

“What does it mean?””

Evelyn read the page.

Then she froze.

Because there was a second name listed.

A name connected to the account.

A name she recognized.

But not from her life with Robert.

From somewhere else.

“Impossible.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What?””

Evelyn pointed.

“This person…”

Her voice became quiet.

“I know this name.””

Claire looked at the document.

“Who is it?””

Evelyn stared at the paper.

A memory surfaced.

A man standing at her wedding reception.

A man Robert introduced as an old friend.

A man who always smiled too easily.

A man who disappeared from their lives years ago.

“His name is Thomas Vale.””

Daniel looked shocked.

“You know Thomas Vale?””

“Robert knew him.””

Claire frowned.

“Who is he?””

Evelyn slowly sat down.

“He was Robert’s business partner.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Was?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

Evelyn’s face darkened.

“Robert accused him of stealing from the company.””

Claire looked confused.

“And?””

“And Thomas denied it.””

“What happened after?””

Evelyn looked at the document.

“Robert cut ties with him.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“How long ago?””

“Twenty-seven years.””

Silence.

The exact same year the legacy account was created.

The exact same year Robert began protecting Claire.

A pattern was forming.

One nobody wanted to see.

Daniel flipped through the records.

“Mrs. Brooks…”

“What?””

“There’s something else.””

He placed another page in front of her.

A recent access log.

Someone had opened the file again.

Yesterday.

The day before Claire arrived.

Evelyn looked at the timestamp.

Then at the name.

Her heart dropped.

Because the person who accessed Robert’s files yesterday wasn’t Thomas Vale.

It wasn’t a stranger.

It wasn’t an outsider.

It was someone currently inside Diamond House.

Someone she had met that very day.

Claire noticed her expression.

“Who is it?””

Evelyn slowly pushed the paper toward them.

Daniel read it.

Then his face changed.

Claire looked down.

And her breath caught.

Because the name on the record belonged to the person who had apologized to Evelyn only hours earlier.

The person who had stood beside the bracelet display.

The person who had claimed to understand her mistake.

*Tara Carter.*

Nobody spoke.

Because the woman they thought had only made a cruel mistake…

May you like

Might have been searching for the same secret that had been hidden for decades.

And now they had to find out why.
