Chapter 7: The Man Behind the Door
Patricia's words made everyone turn.
Marcus moved first.
He spun toward the hallway, but the person standing behind us had already stepped into the shadows.
“Who's there?”” Marcus shouted.
No answer.
The old building creaked around us.
Vanessa backed toward the conference table.
“Patricia, what did you mean?””
Patricia was trembling.
“The original confession. Your father gave me a copy before he died. I kept it separate from the documents Richard has.””
Vanessa stared at her.
“Where is it?””
“Somewhere you can't reach.””
“You have no idea what you're doing.””
Patricia shook her head.
“No, Vanessa. I've spent eleven years knowing exactly what I'm doing. I've spent eleven years keeping quiet because I was afraid of the people involved.””
Marcus stepped between them.
“Enough. Who stole the confession?””
A metallic sound came from the hallway.
Then a man's voice answered.
“Someone who should have destroyed it years ago.””
The conference room door swung open.
A tall man stepped inside.
His hair was gray at the temples. He wore a charcoal coat and carried a leather briefcase.
Marcus stared at him.
The man's face was older, thinner, but unmistakable.
“Daniel?””
For a moment, the man said nothing.
Then he smiled sadly.
“Hello, little brother.””
Marcus stumbled backward.
“No.””
Daniel took another step.
“Marcus.””
“You're dead.””
“I know what they told you.””
Marcus grabbed the edge of the table.
“Your funeral. The police report. The burial.
Mom crying for months. You're telling me all of that was a lie?””
Daniel looked down.
“I'm sorry.””
Marcus lunged forward and grabbed his brother's coat.
“Sorry?””
Daniel didn't resist.
“You let me believe you were dead!””
“I couldn't come back.””
“Why?””
Daniel glanced at Vanessa.
“Because I knew what would happen if I did.””
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“Don't.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You've had eleven years to tell him.””
“Daniel, stop.””
Marcus released his brother and turned toward her.
“You knew?””
Vanessa said nothing.
“You knew my brother was alive?””
Her silence answered him.
Marcus looked as if someone had punched him.
“Were you seeing him behind my back?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Not like that.””
Daniel gave a bitter laugh.
“That's convenient.””
I stepped forward.
“Can someone explain what is happening?””
Daniel turned toward me.
“Claire, your father trusted you more than anyone. That's why he used your name.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Used my name for what?””
“To create a company that could receive the stolen money without immediately connecting it to Harper Development.””
“Are you saying Dad stole from his own company?””
Daniel shook his head.
“No. He created Northbridge as a trap.””
Patricia nodded slowly.
“He wanted to see who would try to move the money.””
Daniel opened his briefcase.
Inside were several folders, a photograph, and a small audio recorder.
“Northbridge was supposed to hold the evidence until the investigation was complete. But someone discovered the arrangement and started moving money through it.””
Marcus frowned.
“Who?””
Daniel looked directly at Vanessa.
“She knows.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I didn't know the full arrangement.””
Daniel placed a document on the table.
“You signed the first transfer.””
“I was following instructions.””
“Whose instructions?””
She looked at Marcus.
“I was protecting him.””
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“By framing my mother?””
Vanessa began crying.
“I didn't know what else to do.””
I stepped toward her.
“You put a fifteen-thousand-dollar bracelet in a sixty-eight-year-old woman's handbag. You watched her cry in front of thirty people. You let our son stand up for her while you called him a liar.””
Vanessa looked down.
“I didn't have a choice.””
I stared at her.
“You always had a choice.””
Daniel opened another folder.
“There's something else.””
He removed a photograph.
It showed my father standing outside a bank with Daniel and another man.
The third man wore a dark suit.
Marcus leaned closer.
“Who is that?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Your father's business partner.””
Marcus frowned.
“Dad never had a business partner.””
“He did. His name was Robert Miller.””
Vanessa's head snapped up.
“Don't.””
Daniel ignored her.
“Robert was the person who introduced your father to Northbridge. He handled the company's financial arrangements.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Robert Miller?””
She nodded faintly.
“My father.””
Marcus stared.
“Your father was involved in Dad's company?””
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
“He was a consultant.””
Daniel laughed without humor.
“He was the person moving the money.””
Vanessa turned toward him.
“You don't know that!””
“I have his signature on every transfer.””
Daniel placed the final document on the table.
Robert Miller's name appeared beneath the authorization.
Marcus stared at it.
“Where is he now?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
Daniel closed the folder.
“Dead.””
The word fell heavily.
I looked at Vanessa.
“When?””
“Six months ago,” she whispered.
Marcus shook his head.
“And you never told me?””
Vanessa's voice cracked.
“He left me something.””
Daniel's expression changed.
“What?””
She reached into her handbag and pulled out a small brass key.
“My father said this would protect me if anyone came looking for the original account records.””
Daniel stared at the key.
Then he looked at Patricia.
“That's the key to the second safe.””
Patricia nodded.
“Where is it?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Vanessa, where is the safe?””
She looked at Marcus.
Then she said something that made him go pale.
“Your father didn't just leave financial records.””
She held up the key.
“He left a letter explaining why he chose Claire instead of you.””
Marcus stared at her.
“What letter?””
Vanessa's eyes moved toward me.
“It's in the safe.””
Daniel closed his briefcase.
“Then we're going to find it.””
But before anyone could move, Patricia's phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her expression changed.
“It's Richard Cole.””
She answered.
“Richard?””
His voice came through loudly enough for all of us to hear.
“Patricia, listen carefully. Someone just broke into my office.””
Marcus grabbed the phone.
“What did they take?””
Richard paused.
May you like
Then answered:
“The second envelope.””
