Chapter 9: The Uncle Who Never Died

Marcus stared at the laptop.

“That's him.””

Richard nodded.

“David Harper has been using the name David Miller for at least ten years.””

Vanessa grabbed the edge of the desk.

“No.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“You recognize him?””

She shook her head.

But her reaction betrayed her.

Richard enlarged the photograph.

“According to public business filings, David Miller is the registered director of Miller Family Consulting.””

Marcus looked at the ledger.

“Robert worked for his own brother?””

Daniel nodded.

“Robert wasn't the mastermind. He was the accountant.””

I felt sick.

“So my father was investigating his own brother?””

Mom looked down.

“He discovered the connection shortly before the accident.””

Marcus paced around the room.

“Why did we have a funeral for Uncle David if he was alive?””

Daniel answered.

“Because the family never saw his body.””

Marcus stopped.

“What?””

“The funeral was closed-casket. Your father was told David had died overseas.””

Richard opened another document.

“The death certificate was issued through a private medical facility in Florida. The identity records were later amended.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Did you know?””

She finally spoke.

“I met David Miller once.””

Marcus turned sharply.

“When?””

“After my father died.””

“Where?””

“At a hotel in Boston.””

Daniel gave a bitter laugh.

“Of course.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“He told me my father had made mistakes. He promised to help me protect the family.””

“By framing Evelyn?””

Vanessa lowered her head.

“He said Claire was going to destroy everything if she discovered the truth.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Why would I destroy anything?””

“Because your father left you the company.””

I stepped toward her.

“That's not an answer.””

She began crying.

“David told me you were dangerous. He said you would take control of the company and send everyone to prison.””

I stared at her.

“So you decided to frame my mother to protect a criminal?””

“I didn't know everything!””

Marcus laughed.

“You knew enough to put a bracelet in her handbag.””

Vanessa looked away.

Daniel closed the ledger.

“We need to find David before he disappears again.””

Richard checked the company filings.

“He has a residence in Naples, Florida. The property is registered under his current name.””

Marcus took out his phone.

“I'm calling the police.””

Richard shook his head.

“Not yet.””

Marcus stared at him.

“Why?””

“Because the documents prove financial fraud, but they don't establish who arranged your father's accident. We need the original recording and the person who can authenticate the transactions.””

Daniel nodded.

“I know where David is.””

Everyone turned.

“You do?”” Marcus asked.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Your father told me before he died.””

Vanessa stepped backward.

“Don't.””

Daniel continued.

“He said David was planning to leave the country. He was going to meet someone at a private airfield.””

Richard frowned.

“When?””

“Tonight.””

I checked the clock.

It was already 4:30 PM.

Marcus grabbed his jacket.

“Then we're going.””

Mom reached for his arm.

“Marcus, please be careful.””

He hugged her.

“I've already lost eleven years. I'm not losing another day.””

I wanted to go with them, but Marcus insisted I take Mom home.

“Claire, someone needs to make sure she's safe.””

I nodded reluctantly.

Before leaving, Daniel approached me.

“Your father would be proud of you.””

I looked at him.

“You knew Dad was protecting me?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn't you come back?””

His expression darkened.

“Because David threatened to destroy Marcus if I did.””

I swallowed.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel glanced toward his brother.

“Ask him what happened the night of the accident.””

Marcus turned.

“Daniel.””

His brother hesitated.

Then he spoke.

“You weren't supposed to be at that restaurant.””

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

“The person you met that night wasn't me.””

I looked at my husband.

“Who was it?””

Daniel answered.

“David.””

Marcus's face went pale.

“He was pretending to be you?””

Daniel nodded.

“He used my name to get you to the restaurant. He needed you away from your father.””

Marcus backed away.

“But I saw you.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You saw someone wearing my coat. Someone who looked enough like me from a distance.””

Marcus covered his mouth.

Then he whispered:

“I heard a crash on the road that night.””

Mom looked at him.

“What crash?””

Marcus's eyes filled.

“I thought it was a truck hitting a barrier. I stopped to check, but someone told me the driver was already dead.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Where?””

Marcus described the road.

Richard immediately searched the location.

His face changed.

“That's the exact stretch where your father's car was found.””

Marcus looked devastated.

“I was there?””

Daniel nodded.

“And you were the last person who could have helped him.””

Marcus sank into a chair.

“I didn't know.””

Daniel put a hand on his shoulder.

“I know.””

At 8:15 PM, Marcus called me.

I was sitting beside Mom in the living room.

“Did you find him?”” I asked.

There was noise in the background.

Then Marcus answered.

“We're at the airfield.””

My heart raced.

“Is David there?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

Marcus took a breath.

“Daniel recognized the plane. It's the same one David used eleven years ago.””

I stood.

“Where is he?””

“Inside the hangar.””

Then I heard a loud bang.

Marcus shouted something.

A second voice screamed.

And the call went dead.

I tried calling him back.

No answer.

I called Daniel.

Nothing.

Then a message arrived from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph.

Marcus was kneeling on the concrete floor of a hangar.

A man stood behind him holding a gun.

The man's face was partly visible.

It was David Harper.

Underneath the photograph were nine words.

*Bring Claire's original trust documents, or your husband dies.*

I stared at the screen.

Mom saw my expression.

“What happened?””

I couldn't speak.

Then another message arrived.

*You have one hour. Come alone.*

Mom grabbed my hand.

“Claire, don't go.””

I looked at the photograph again.

Marcus's face was bruised, but his eyes were open.

He was alive.

I called the police.

Then I opened the locked drawer in my father's old desk.

Inside were the original trust documents Richard had given us.

But beneath them was something I hadn't noticed before.

A small envelope addressed in my father's handwriting.

Claire — Open only if David comes looking for the trust.

My hands trembled as I tore it open.

Inside was a single photograph.

It showed my father standing beside David.

Between them stood a little girl.

A girl with my face.

I turned the photograph over.

My father's handwriting read:

David is not your uncle.

I stopped breathing.

Mom looked over my shoulder.

Then she whispered the words I had never expected to hear.

May you like

“Claire, there's something about your birth that your father never told you.””

And suddenly, I understood why David wanted the trust documents so desperately.
