Chapter 14: The Man My Grandmother Never Stopped Looking For

I stared at the photograph.

My father.

Alive.

The man I had buried in my heart for more than a decade was standing outside a train station.

I looked at Richard.

"Where was this taken?""

"Portland, Maine. Eight years ago.""

My mother grabbed the photograph.

"That's impossible.""

Richard nodded.

"I thought so too.""

"Why didn't you tell us?""

"Because the photograph was found among Eleanor's private records. She never confirmed the man's identity.""

I looked at the image again.

The resemblance was undeniable.

"Did Grandma know he was alive?""

Richard shook his head.

"She suspected it. She hired a private investigator, but the trail went cold.""

My mother sat down.

"Why would he disappear?""

Richard placed another document beside the photograph.

"According to Eleanor's notes, your father believed someone was following him after the financial scandal. He may have staged his death to protect you.""

I couldn't breathe properly.

My father had been alive.

Somewhere.

For years.

While I cried at his grave.

While my mother celebrated birthdays without him.

While my grandmother spent the rest of her life searching.

I turned toward Richard.

"Find him.""

He nodded.

"I've already started.""

"Today.""

"Emily, you need to recover first.""

"Richard, please.""

He looked at me.

Then he took out his phone.

"I'll make the calls.""

My mother reached for my hand.

I looked at her.

"Did you ever suspect?""

She shook her head.

"Never. I believed he was dead.""

I looked back at the photograph.

There was something written on the back.

Michael Carter — confirmed sighting, August 2018.

Beneath it was another sentence.

He asked about Emily.

My eyes filled.

He had asked about me.

After all those years, my father had still been thinking about me.

Three days later, I was discharged from the hospital.

Margaret and Victor had been arrested.

Daniel was being questioned about the forged documents, attempted financial fraud, and his involvement in the scheme.

Vanessa had agreed to provide evidence in exchange for consideration of her cooperation.

Robert had also given a full statement.

The investigation was moving forward.

But I could think about only one thing.

My father.

Richard called on the fourth morning.

"Emily, we found him.""

I sat upright.

"Where?""

"An apartment outside Portland. The investigator confirmed his identity.""

I covered my mouth.

"Is he alive?""

"Yes.""

I began crying.

"Can I see him?""

Richard paused.

"He's agreed to meet you.""

My mother stood from the kitchen table.

"When?""

"Tomorrow.""

I spent the entire night awake.

I looked through old family photographs.

My father holding me as a baby.

My father teaching me to ride a bicycle.

My father standing beside my grandmother at the lake house.

There were so many memories.

And now there was a possibility of making new ones.

The next afternoon, Richard drove us to Portland.

The apartment building was modest, with faded brick walls and a small garden beside the entrance.

I stood outside the door for nearly a minute.

My mother held my hand.

"Are you ready?""

I shook my head.

Then I knocked.

Footsteps approached.

The door opened.

A man stood in front of us.

He had gray hair, tired eyes, and a small scar near his chin.

But it was him.

My father.

He looked at me.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then he whispered:

"Emily?""

I burst into tears.

"Dad.""

He covered his mouth.

His eyes filled.

"Oh, sweetheart.""

He pulled me into his arms.

I held him as tightly as I could without hurting my shoulder.

My mother began crying behind me.

My father looked over my head.

"Margaret.""

She stepped forward.

"Michael.""

He released me slowly.

"I never thought I'd see you again.""

My father nodded.

"Neither did I.""

We sat in his small living room.

There were no family photographs on the walls.

No decorations.

Only a few books, a coffee table, and a framed picture of a lake.

My father looked at my shoulder.

"What happened?""

I gave him the short version.

The wedding.

Daniel.

Vanessa.

The forged signature.

Margaret.

His expression grew darker with every sentence.

When I finished, he closed his eyes.

"I should have known she'd try again.""

"Why didn't you come back?""

He stared at his hands.

"Because I thought it was the only way to keep you alive.""

I leaned forward.

"Tell me what happened.""

He took a long breath.

"After I discovered Victor and Margaret had been stealing from the company, I confronted them. Your uncle Michael—"

He stopped.

Then corrected himself.

"Your uncle Robert had already been giving them information. I didn't know how far it went.""

I looked at him.

"Robert admitted it.""

My father nodded.

"Victor arranged the transfers. Margaret controlled the shell companies. But there was someone else.""

"Who?""

My father looked at Richard.

Richard remained silent.

"Your grandmother," my father said.

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Why?""

"Because Eleanor had discovered that Margaret was planning to take control of the estate. She made a deal with her.""

I shook my head.

"Richard told me about the agreement.""

My father nodded.

"Your grandmother believed she could negotiate a peaceful settlement. But when I refused to cooperate, she became afraid that everything would collapse.""

"Did she have anything to do with your accident?""

He looked away.

"I don't know.""

I stared at him.

"What do you mean?""

"Before the accident, I received a warning. Someone told me that if I didn't disappear, you would be next.""

My mother covered her mouth.

"Who threatened you?""

"I never saw the person. But I recognized the voice.""

"Whose?""

My father looked at me.

"Margaret.""

Silence filled the room.

He continued.

"Two days later, my car went off the road. The investigators believed I had died. But I survived. A truck driver found me and took me to a hospital under an incorrect name.""

I felt tears run down my face.

"Why didn't you contact us?""

"Because I believed Margaret would hurt you if she knew I was alive. I thought disappearing would protect you.""

"And Grandma?""

"She knew I survived. I contacted her through Richard.""

I turned toward him.

Richard nodded.

"Your grandmother and I helped arrange the disappearance.""

I stared at my father's face.

"Why didn't Grandma tell me?""

"Because she was afraid.""

He reached into a drawer and removed an old photograph.

It showed my grandmother, my father, and a young Daniel.

Daniel was sitting on my father's lap.

I stared at it.

"Why is Daniel here?""

My father looked at the photograph.

"Because Michael was his father, and I helped raise him for a short time after Margaret left.""

I frowned.

"Did you know he was my cousin?""

"Yes. Your grandmother knew too.""

"Then why didn't anyone tell me?""

"Because Margaret took Daniel away and threatened to expose the financial investigation if we tried to contact him.""

I looked down.

The family had been trapped in silence for years.

My father reached across the table.

"Emily, I need you to understand something. Daniel wasn't born evil. But he was raised on lies, and he chose to continue them.""

I nodded.

"That doesn't excuse him.""

"No. It doesn't.""

He squeezed my hand.

"Your grandmother made mistakes. So did I. But she never stopped loving you.""

I looked at the photograph.

"She left me a letter.""

He smiled sadly.

"She told me she would.""

Then he stood and walked toward a locked cabinet.

He returned with a small wooden box.

"I kept this for you.""

Inside was a gold locket.

I recognized it immediately.

It was my grandmother's.

My father opened it.

There was a photograph inside of the two of us when I was a little girl.

And on the opposite side was a tiny folded note.

I opened it.

Emily, if you ever find your father, tell him I waited until my last breath.

I looked at my father.

He covered his eyes.

For the first time, I understood that my grandmother had not simply been hiding the truth.

She had been waiting for the family to find its way back to each other.

Then Richard's phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

And his expression changed.

"What happened?"" I asked.

He ended the call.

"Margaret has requested to speak with you.""

My father stood immediately.

"Absolutely not.""

Richard looked at me.

"She says she knows where the original money went.""

I looked at my father.

Then at the locket in my hand.

"Tell her I'll meet her.""

My father shook his head.

"Emily, no.""

May you like

I held his hand.

"She took years from us. She doesn't get to decide when this ends.""
