Chapter 2: The Recording Nobody Expected
"Emily, put that away.""
Daniel's voice was low, but the microphone near the officiant caught enough of it for the first few rows to hear.
I looked at him.
"Why?""
He glanced toward our guests.
"Because you're upset. You're not thinking clearly.""
"Interesting. That's almost exactly what you said about me in that room.""
His jaw tightened.
Vanessa began moving toward the aisle.
My mother stood up.
"What's happening?"" she asked.
Daniel immediately turned toward her.
"Mrs. Carter, please. Emily is having a panic attack. She found something on my shirt and misunderstood.""
I almost laughed.
He was still doing it.
Still trying to control the story before anyone had heard the truth.
My mother looked at me.
"Sweetheart, do you want to step outside?""
"No, Mom.""
I took her hand.
"I want you to hear this.""
Then I handed the USB to the technician in the sound booth.
His name was Michael. He had been hired to manage the music and video presentation during the reception.
He looked at Daniel, then at me.
"Are you sure?""
"Please.""
He inserted the USB into the computer.
Daniel stepped toward him.
"Don't touch that.""
Michael froze.
The officiant frowned.
"Sir, please remain where you are.""
Daniel looked around as though he had just realized how many people were watching him.
Then he forced another smile.
"Everyone, I apologize. My fiancée is under a lot of pressure. Weddings can be overwhelming.""
Vanessa nodded quickly.
"Yes. She's been exhausted for days.""
I turned toward her.
"Vanessa, you were standing beside Daniel when I heard everything, weren't you?""
Her lips parted.
"I don't know what you're talking about.""
"Really?""
I looked at the technician.
"Play it.""
A soft crackle came through the speakers.
Then Daniel's voice filled the church.
"Just one more hour.""
A few guests exchanged confused looks.
Vanessa's recorded laughter followed.
"Then all of her family assets are connected to you.""
The church went still.
Daniel closed his eyes.
My mother slowly lowered herself into her seat.
The recording continued.
"She doesn't need to know. Once we're married, the trust clause activates.""
My grandmother's name wasn't mentioned, but everyone in my family understood what it meant.
My uncle Robert stood from the third row.
"What trust clause?""
Nobody answered.
The recording continued.
"After that, we make her think she's the problem.""
Then Vanessa laughed.
"You're cruel.""
"Only when necessary.""
The audio stopped.
For three seconds, nobody moved.
Then the church erupted.
"What the hell was that?"" someone shouted.
"Daniel?"" Margaret gasped.
My mother covered her mouth.
Robert pushed past the guests and walked toward the altar.
Daniel raised both hands.
"Everyone, calm down.""
I looked at him.
"Would you like to explain?""
He swallowed.
"That recording is taken out of context.""
"Which part?""
"All of it.""
I blinked.
"All of it?""
"Yes. Vanessa and I were discussing a business arrangement. You don't understand the legal details.""
Vanessa shook her head violently.
"Daniel, don't drag me into this.""
I turned toward her.
"That's interesting. You were quite comfortable being involved twenty minutes ago.""
She glared at me.
"You're twisting everything.""
I pulled out my phone.
"Then perhaps you can explain the photographs.""
Daniel's expression changed.
I opened my gallery.
A photograph showed Daniel holding Vanessa around the waist in the groom's waiting room.
Another showed her kissing his collar.
A third showed Daniel checking the hallway while Vanessa adjusted her dress.
I had taken them through the narrow gap in the door before stepping away.
The images were slightly blurred, but the faces were unmistakable.
I held the phone toward the guests.
"Is this also out of context?""
Daniel's face reddened.
"Emily, stop.""
"No. You stop.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"You helped me choose my wedding flowers. You helped me select my dress. You even held my grandmother's necklace while I was getting ready.""
Vanessa looked away.
I continued.
"And you were kissing my fiancé in the room next door.""
"Daniel told me your relationship was over," she snapped.
I stared at her.
"When?""
"Months ago.""
Daniel spun toward her.
"Vanessa!""
She flinched.
I took one step closer.
"Months ago? Then why were you helping me plan this wedding?""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"Because he said he needed time.""
I laughed softly.
"Time for what? To steal my inheritance?""
She looked at Daniel.
He looked back at her with a warning expression.
And suddenly, something became obvious.
They weren't just having an affair.
They were already turning against each other.
Daniel approached me.
"Emily, listen. We can talk privately.""
"There is nothing private left to discuss.""
"You're making a terrible mistake.""
I looked down at the hand he had extended toward me.
The same hand that had held mine during our engagement photographs.
The same hand that had slipped a diamond ring onto my finger.
I removed the ring.
His eyes followed it.
"Don't," he whispered.
I placed it in his palm.
"We're not getting married.""
Margaret stood up.
"Emily, please. Don't make a permanent decision over one misunderstanding.""
I turned toward her.
"Did you know?""
Her expression froze.
"Know what?""
"That Daniel was planning to access my grandmother's trust.""
She looked at her son.
Just for a moment.
But it was enough.
"Margaret?""
She shook her head.
"You're confused.""
I stared at her.
"That's not an answer.""
Daniel stepped between us.
"Leave my mother out of this.""
I looked at him.
"Then perhaps you should have left my grandmother's money out of your plans.""
Robert reached the altar.
"Emily, your attorney is here.""
I turned.
Richard Collins stood at the entrance, still wearing his dark gray suit. He held a leather folder in one hand and his phone in the other.
He had arrived just as the recording ended.
"Thank goodness," I whispered.
Richard walked toward us.
"Daniel," he said calmly.
"We need to discuss the trust.""
Daniel's face turned pale.
"You're her attorney. This is a family matter.""
"Actually, it is a legal matter.""
Richard opened his folder.
"I reviewed the relevant provisions after Emily called me.""
Daniel looked toward the guests.
"Can we not do this here?""
Richard ignored him.
"Emily, there's something you need to understand. Your grandmother anticipated the possibility that someone might attempt to marry you for access to her estate.""
My throat tightened.
"What do you mean?""
Richard pulled out a document.
"Your grandmother added a protective provision shortly before her death.""
Daniel stared at the paper.
"What provision?""
Richard looked directly at him.
"The marriage clause does not transfer control of Emily's assets to her spouse.""
A murmur spread through the church.
Richard continued.
"It does the opposite.""
Daniel's expression changed.
I frowned.
"What does it do?""
Richard turned the page.
"It requires an independent review whenever there is evidence of coercion, financial deception, or a fraudulent attempt to obtain an interest in the estate.""
I stared at him.
"And?""
"And the review can suspend certain transactions until the trustee determines whether the marriage was entered into in good faith.""
Daniel took a step backward.
"That's ridiculous.""
Richard closed the folder.
"Your statements on that recording provide a serious reason to investigate.""
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
"He told me the money would be his after the wedding.""
Daniel turned toward her.
"Shut up.""
She looked frightened.
"He said he had already spoken to a lawyer.""
Richard raised his eyebrows.
"Which lawyer?""
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Then stopped.
Daniel grabbed her arm.
"Don't say another word.""
She pulled away.
"Don't touch me!""
The guests gasped.
I watched them argue.
For months, they had planned this together.
Now, in front of everyone, they were fighting to save themselves.
Richard leaned toward me.
"Emily, we should leave. There's more you need to see.""
I looked at him.
"What?""
He hesitated.
"Your grandmother left instructions for a situation like this.""
My heart skipped.
"Instructions?""
Richard nodded.
"She left a sealed letter with my firm. It can only be opened under specific circumstances.""
"What circumstances?""
He looked toward Daniel.
"One of them is evidence that someone attempted to marry you for financial gain.""
Daniel's face went completely white.
I looked at the man I had almost married.
May you like
Then Richard said something that made the entire church fall silent again.
"Emily, your grandmother didn't just protect your inheritance. She left you something else.""
