Chapter 8: The Night Ava Forgot
The basement felt smaller after Vanessa said those words.
Maybe it’s time you remembered what really happened that night.
Ava stared at her.
The sentence made no sense.
And yet, somehow, it felt familiar.
Like a door in her mind that had been locked for months.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa didn’t answer immediately.
She looked at Daniel.
Then at Noah.
Then back at Ava.
“You really don’t remember.””
Ava’s expression hardened.
“Remember what?””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Vanessa, stop.””
That was the first time Ava heard fear in his voice.
Not guilt.
Not confusion.
Fear.
She turned toward him.
“You know.””
Daniel looked away.
Ava’s heart sank.
“Daniel.””
“I didn’t want to bring it up.””
“Bring what up?””
Nobody answered.
Noah held onto Ava’s hand.
“Mom?””
She looked down.
“It’s okay, baby.””
But it wasn’t.
Nothing had been okay for a long time.
Rachel closed the laptop.
“Someone explain.””
Daniel rubbed his face.
“December 18…”
He stopped.
Ava waited.
“What happened?””
Daniel looked at her.
“That was the night Noah went missing.””
Ava frowned.
“No.””
The word came out instantly.
“Noah never went missing.””
Daniel swallowed.
“Yes, he did.””
Ava shook her head.
“I would remember that.””
“You don’t.””
The room went silent.
Ava looked at him like he had said something impossible.
“What do you mean I don’t?””
Daniel’s voice became softer.
“Something happened that night.””
Ava felt a strange pressure building in her chest.
Like her body knew something her mind refused to accept.
She looked at Noah.
“Baby?””
Noah looked scared.
“What?””
“Do you remember December 18?””
The boy’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Ava noticed.
“Noah?””
He looked down.
“I remember being scared.””
Ava’s breath caught.
“Why?””
He squeezed her hand.
“Because I couldn’t find you.””
Ava felt dizzy.
Rachel looked between them.
“What happened that night?””
Daniel sat down on the basement stairs.
His shoulders dropped.
“The police came.””
Ava stared.
“What?””
“You called them.””
“I did?””
Daniel nodded.
“You thought Noah had disappeared.””
Ava stepped back.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“That’s not possible.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You were the one searching the backyard.””
Ava’s face went pale.
She looked around.
The basement.
The boxes.
The notebook.
The camera.
Pieces.
Fragments.
Memories she couldn’t hold.
“I…”
She pressed a hand to her forehead.
“I remember looking for him.””
Daniel nodded.
“But you said you found him.””
Ava looked up.
“Where?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Vanessa answered.
“In the basement.””
Ava turned.
The room seemed to tilt.
“No.””
Vanessa stared at her.
“Yes.””
“You told me he was playing hide-and-seek.””
Vanessa smiled slightly.
“You remember that part.””
Ava closed her eyes.
A flash.
Noah laughing.
Noah hiding.
Noah running.
Then nothing.
A blank space.
“What happened after?””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“You found him.””
Ava looked at Noah.
“And then?””
Noah didn’t answer.
Ava knelt.
“Baby, look at me.””
He slowly looked up.
“Do you remember?””
His eyes filled.
“I remember Vanessa saying not to tell.””
Ava froze.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“What?””
Noah continued quietly.
“She said if I told you, you would be angry.””
Ava’s heart started racing.
“Tell me what happened.””
Noah shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
“It’s okay.””
“She said I made everyone upset.””
Ava held his hands.
“No.””
“She said Daddy was tired because of me.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
The pain on his face was immediate.
Rachel looked at Vanessa.
“Is that true?””
Vanessa’s expression stayed calm.
“She was already unstable.””
Ava stood.
“Who?””
Vanessa pointed at her.
“You.””
The word echoed.
“You were exhausted. Emotional. Angry all the time.””
Ava stared.
“You’re blaming me?””
“No.””
Vanessa smiled faintly.
“I’m explaining.””
Rachel shook her head.
“No. You’re controlling the story again.””
Vanessa ignored her.
“You want to know why Daniel believed me?””
Ava looked at Daniel.
Vanessa continued.
“Because he saw what happened that night.””
Ava turned.
“What did he see?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“Vanessa.””
“No.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Tell her.””
Daniel stayed silent.
Ava’s voice lowered.
“Tell me.””
Daniel looked at her.
“That night…”
He took a breath.
“You were overwhelmed.””
Ava frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“You were crying.””
“I was worried about my son.””
“I know.””
“Then what?””
Daniel looked away.
“You said something.””
Ava waited.
“What?””
Daniel swallowed.
“You said you couldn’t do this anymore.””
Ava stared.
The sentence felt like it belonged to someone else.
Someone she didn’t recognize.
“What does that mean?””
“You said maybe Noah would be better off with someone else.””
The words hit her.
“No.””
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“I know you didn’t mean it.””
“No.””
“You were exhausted.””
“No.””
Ava shook her head.
“I would never say that.””
Daniel looked at her.
“But you did.””
Silence.
Ava tried to remember.
The night.
The stress.
The exhaustion.
The fear.
She remembered crying.
She remembered feeling like she was failing.
But she didn’t remember saying those words.
Vanessa watched her.
Waiting.
Ava looked at Rachel.
“Can you find the recording?””
Rachel nodded slowly.
“I’ll try.””
She opened her laptop.
“Who had access?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
Ava immediately noticed.
“What?””
Daniel hesitated.
“The recording was from a camera in the living room.””
Ava stared.
“The cameras.””
“Yes.””
“Who installed them?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Rachel looked up.
“Daniel.””
He sighed.
“I did.””
Ava felt numb.
“You had cameras everywhere.””
“I wanted to understand what was happening.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You wanted evidence.””
Daniel didn’t argue.
Rachel searched through files.
Then stopped.
“I found something.””
Everyone moved closer.
The screen loaded.
December 18.
11:07 PM.
The living room.
Ava saw herself.
She looked exhausted.
Her hair messy.
Her eyes red.
She was sitting on the couch.
Noah stood in front of her.
Crying.
Ava covered her mouth.
Because she remembered this moment.
Part of it.
Noah said:
“Mommy, don’t be mad.””
Ava on the screen looked shocked.
“I’m not mad.””
Then Vanessa entered.
The recording continued.
Vanessa said:
“See? He’s scared of you.””
Ava immediately looked up.
“No.””
Rachel paused.
“What?””
Ava pointed.
“Go back.””
Rachel replayed the moment.
Vanessa entered.
And for half a second…
before speaking…
she looked directly at the camera.
Not at Ava.
Not at Noah.
At the camera.
Like she knew exactly where it was.
Ava whispered:
“She knew.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Knew what?””
“That she was being recorded.””
Rachel zoomed in.
Vanessa’s eyes.
Her expression.
The timing.
Ava felt a cold wave move through her.
“She performed.””
Vanessa laughed.
“What?””
Ava looked at her.
“You weren’t showing Daniel the truth.””
She pointed at the screen.
“You were creating a version of it.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
Rachel continued the video.
This time, everyone watched carefully.
On the screen, Ava looked at Noah.
“I’m sorry.””
Noah cried.
“I’m sorry too.””
Vanessa immediately stepped in.
“See? He knows he did something wrong.””
But then something happened.
Something nobody expected.
Noah turned away from Vanessa.
And whispered:
“I didn’t do anything.””
Everyone froze.
Because that sentence had never been included in Vanessa’s recordings.
Rachel checked the timeline.
Her eyes widened.
“Wait.””
“What?””
She looked closer.
“The original file has been cut.””
Ava stared.
“How much?””
Rachel shook her head.
“Almost three minutes.””
Daniel whispered:
“What was removed?””
Rachel clicked restore.
The missing section loaded.
The screen changed.
And everyone watched.
After Noah whispered, “I didn’t do anything,” the little boy walked toward the hallway.
Vanessa followed.
Then Ava heard her own voice from the recording.
“Leave him alone.””
Ava froze.
Because she didn’t remember saying that.
The recording continued.
Ava stood up.
“You don’t talk to him like that.””
Vanessa looked surprised.
Then angry.
The version of Ava on screen was not broken.
Not unstable.
Not dangerous.
She was protective.
She was fighting.
Rachel looked at Ava.
“She deleted the part where you defended him.””
Ava couldn’t breathe.
The screen continued.
Then came the final missing moment.
Vanessa leaned toward Noah.
And whispered something.
Something so quiet the first time nobody heard it.
Rachel increased the volume.
The words came through.
“You want to know what happens when your mommy doesn’t believe you?””
Ava’s blood froze.
Vanessa continued:
“You lose her.””
The video stopped.
Nobody spoke.
Because now they knew.
The truth had never been hidden.
It had been buried.
Vanessa had spent months making Ava doubt herself.
Making Daniel doubt her.
Making Noah doubt whether anyone would protect him.
Ava slowly turned toward Vanessa.
“You made me forget.””
Vanessa’s face finally cracked.
“No.””
“You manipulated everything.””
“No.””
“You cut the recordings.””
Vanessa stepped back.
“Ava.””
“You made everyone think I was the problem.””
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
And for the first time, she stopped pretending.
“You want the truth?””
Ava stared.
Vanessa smiled.
“I needed you gone.””
The words were quiet.
Clear.
Honest.
Daniel went still.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Because as long as she was here…”
She pointed at Ava.
“I would never have this family.””
Ava felt a chill.
Then Vanessa said the one thing nobody expected.
“But I didn’t plan for Noah to remember.””
The room went silent.
Rachel frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked at Noah.
And Noah immediately stepped behind Ava.
Because he understood.
He knew.
Vanessa had done something before.
Something worse.
Ava’s voice shook.
“What did you do to my son?””
Vanessa said nothing.
Then Rachel’s laptop suddenly chimed.
A new file appeared.
Uploaded.
No sender.
No account.
Just one title.
Ava stared at it.
The name of the file made her heart stop.
*NOAH’S REAL STATEMENT.*
And beneath it…
May you like
A timestamp.
Created the same night Noah disappeared.
