Chapter 9: The Voice He Was Never Allowed To Share

The file sat on Rachel’s laptop screen.

*NOAH’S REAL STATEMENT.*

Nobody touched the keyboard.

Nobody breathed normally.

The title alone felt like a warning.

Ava stared at the timestamp.

The night Noah disappeared.

The night she couldn’t remember clearly.

The night Vanessa had used for months to convince everyone that Ava was the problem.

Rachel slowly reached for the laptop.

“I didn’t create this.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What?””

“I didn’t upload anything.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

For the first time, she looked genuinely confused.

Rachel looked at the file information.

“No account attached.””

Daniel frowned.

“That’s impossible.””

Rachel looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because only the administrator account could access the security system.””

Everyone turned toward him.

Ava noticed immediately.

“You know the system better than anyone.””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“I installed it.””

“And Vanessa knew how to use it?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Ava’s eyes narrowed.

“Daniel.””

He sighed.

“She had access.””

“Why?””

“Because she asked.””

Ava stared.

“Of course she did.””

Rachel clicked the file.

A warning appeared.

*Audio only.*

She pressed play.

At first, there was only silence.

Then a small voice.

Noah.

Younger.

Scared.

“Is this on?””

Ava covered her mouth.

Because even before he said anything else, she recognized the fear in his voice.

A child trying to be brave.

A child who didn’t know if anyone would listen.

Then an adult voice spoke.

Not Vanessa.

Not Daniel.

Ava.

Her own voice.

“Just tell the truth, Noah.””

Ava froze.

Rachel looked at her.

“You don’t remember this?””

Ava shook her head slowly.

“No.””

The recording continued.

Noah sniffed.

“I don’t want her to be mad.””

Ava’s voice answered.

“Who?””

A pause.

Then:

“Vanessa.””

The basement went silent.

Ava listened.

Every word felt like a piece of herself she had lost.

“What did she do?”” her recorded voice asked.

Noah hesitated.

“She said I’m bad.””

Ava closed her eyes.

“She said I ruin things.””

Daniel looked down.

Noah continued.

“She said Daddy loves her more because she doesn’t make problems.””

Daniel’s face changed.

Ava looked at him.

He couldn’t meet her eyes.

The recording continued.

“I told her I wanted Mommy.””

Ava’s voice became softer.

“And what did she say?””

A long pause.

Then Noah whispered:

“She said Mommy gets tired of me.””

Ava’s eyes filled.

“No.””

The word escaped her lips.

Nobody noticed.

Everyone was listening.

The recording continued.

“She said if I tell you, you’ll get angry.””

Ava’s voice on the recording changed.

Not tired.

Not distracted.

Angry.

“Did she say that?””

“Yes.””

“Did she ever hurt you?””

Noah didn’t answer.

That silence was painful.

Ava leaned closer.

The little boy finally spoke.

“She hurts my feelings.””

Ava looked down.

Because that was how a six-year-old described emotional pain.

Not with complicated words.

Not with accusations.

Just the simplest truth he knew.

The recording continued.

Then came a sound.

A door opening.

Noah’s voice changed instantly.

“Someone’s coming.””

The audio became muffled.

Then Vanessa’s voice appeared.

“What are you doing?””

Ava’s recorded voice answered:

“I’m talking to him.””

“You’re putting ideas in his head.””

“No.””

“You always do this.””

“Do what?””

“Make me look like the bad person.””

There was silence.

Then Vanessa said something that made everyone in the basement freeze.

“You have no idea what I’m capable of.””

The recording stopped.

Rachel looked up.

“That’s it.””

Ava stared.

“That’s all?””

Rachel shook her head.

“No.””

She checked the file.

“Someone cut the ending.””

Daniel looked shocked.

“Again?””

Rachel nodded.

“They removed the last thirty seconds.””

Ava looked at Vanessa.

“Why?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Rachel opened the recovery tool.

A progress bar appeared.

Everyone waited.

Five percent.

Twenty.

Forty.

Sixty.

Then—

Recovered.

Rachel opened the final section.

The audio returned.

Ava’s voice.

“Vanessa, what are you doing?””

Vanessa answered.

“You want to know why Noah listens to me?””

Ava’s recorded voice sounded angry.

“Stay away from him.””

Vanessa laughed.

Then came a sound.

A door closing.

Ava looked toward the basement door.

The same sound.

A memory flashed.

A dark hallway.

Noah crying.

Vanessa standing nearby.

Then the recording continued.

Vanessa whispered:

“Because he knows nobody comes when he calls.””

Ava’s eyes filled with tears.

Then Noah’s voice.

“Mommy will come.””

Vanessa replied:

“No.””

A pause.

Then:

“She already didn’t.””

The audio ended.

Nobody spoke.

Daniel looked devastated.

Rachel closed the laptop.

Ava turned toward Vanessa.

“You made him believe I abandoned him.””

Vanessa didn’t deny it.

Instead, she looked angry.

“You weren’t supposed to find this.””

The sentence changed everything.

Ava stared.

“You admit it?””

Vanessa realized.

Too late.

She stepped back.

“I mean—”

“No.””

Ava’s voice became calm.

“You finally said the truth.””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“You think this changes everything?””

Ava looked at Noah.

Then back at her.

“Yes.””

Vanessa laughed.

“You still don’t understand.””

Ava frowned.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“Tell her.””

Daniel went still.

Ava noticed.

“What?””

Daniel looked away.

Vanessa smiled.

“She doesn’t know.””

Ava stepped closer.

“Know what?””

Daniel’s silence was terrifying.

“Daniel.””

He swallowed.

“The night Noah disappeared…”

Ava waited.

“What?””

“I found him in the basement.””

Ava stared.

“You already said that.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I found him before you did.””

The room went cold.

Ava shook her head.

“What are you saying?””

Daniel looked at Noah.

“I heard him crying.””

Noah looked at him.

“You heard me?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

Ava felt anger rising.

“Then why didn’t you come?””

Daniel looked broken.

“Because Vanessa told me to wait.””

Ava turned toward Vanessa.

“You told him to wait?””

Vanessa’s face remained calm.

“She said she was handling it.””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“I thought she was trying to calm him down.””

Ava stared.

“And when did you find him?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Twenty minutes later.””

Noah looked down.

Twenty minutes.

The missing time.

The night nobody remembered.

The night Vanessa had used.

Ava’s voice shook.

“What happened during those twenty minutes?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Vanessa did.

“He learned a lesson.””

Ava turned.

The cruelty of the words made everyone silent.

“You’re proud of that?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“I wanted him to understand consequences.””

“He was six.””

“He was becoming like you.””

Ava froze.

“Like me?””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Emotional. Weak. Dependent.””

Daniel looked horrified.

“Vanessa.””

But she kept going.

“I needed him to stop needing you.””

Ava felt something break inside her.

Not sadness.

Not fear.

Something stronger.

She walked toward Noah.

Put a hand on his shoulder.

And looked at Vanessa.

“You wanted to replace me.””

Vanessa smiled.

“Yes.””

The honesty was shocking.

“I wanted him to choose me.””

Ava stared.

“He’s a child.””

“I know.””

“No.””

Ava shook her head.

“You don’t.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Ava continued.

“A child is not something you win.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Rachel’s phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her face changed.

“What?””

She listened.

Then looked at Ava.

“Ava…”

“What?””

“The police are here.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Why?””

Rachel looked toward the stairs.

“Because someone called them.””

Ava looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa smiled faintly.

“I did.””

Everyone froze.

“You called the police?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Vanessa picked up her coat.

“Because now I have my proof.””

Ava stared.

“What proof?””

Vanessa looked at Noah.

Then at Ava.

And whispered:

“The recording where you threatened me.””

Ava’s blood ran cold.

“What?””

Vanessa smiled.

“The one I saved before you found this basement.””

Rachel immediately grabbed the laptop.

“No.””

She checked the files.

Then froze.

Ava saw her expression.

“What?””

Rachel looked up.

“There’s another recording.””

“From when?””

Rachel swallowed.

“Tonight.””

Ava felt cold.

“Tonight?””

Rachel nodded.

“And it starts before you arrived.””

The basement door opened.

Two police officers stood at the top of the stairs.

Vanessa walked toward them.

Calm.

Confident.

Like she had been waiting for this moment.

Ava watched her.

Then looked at Rachel.

“What’s on the recording?””

Rachel hesitated.

The answer scared her.

“It shows you screaming.””

Ava froze.

“What?””

Rachel looked at the screen.

“And it sounds like you’re threatening Vanessa.””

Ava stared at the woman who had planned everything.

The woman who had controlled every story.

And Vanessa whispered:

“Now everyone gets to see the version of you I created.””
