Chapter 13: The Thing She Risked Everything For
The ballroom waited for Simone’s answer.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The only sound was the faint hum of the lights above us.
For the first time all night, Simone had nowhere left to hide.
No explanation.
No excuse.
No person to blame.
Marcus stood in front of her.
“What did you use?””
She looked at him.
Her eyes were full of fear.
Not fear of losing the wedding.
Not fear of losing money.
Fear of losing the last piece of trust he had left.
“Simone.””
She swallowed.
“I used the house.””
Marcus froze.
The words didn’t make sense at first.
“What?””
She looked down.
“The house.””
Evelyn stood immediately.
“What house?””
Nobody answered.
Then she realized.
Her face changed.
“No.””
Simone started crying.
“Mom…”
“No.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“You didn’t.””
Marcus looked between them.
“What are you talking about?””
I watched my mother’s expression.
She wasn’t confused.
She was devastated.
The kind of devastated that comes from realizing someone crossed a line you never thought they would cross.
Simone whispered:
“I used the equity.””
Marcus stared.
“The equity from what?””
The silence answered before she did.
“Your parents’ house.””
The entire ballroom seemed to stop.
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
Then at Simone.
Then back at Evelyn.
“You used their house?””
Simone shook her head quickly.
“No. Not like that.””
“Then explain.””
She wiped her tears.
“I thought I could fix everything.””
Marcus laughed quietly.
A painful sound.
“Of course you did.””
“Marcus.””
“No.””
He stepped back.
“You keep saying that like it makes it better.””
“It was supposed to be temporary.””
“How?””
“I had a plan.””
Everyone looked at her.
“What plan?””
She looked toward Vanessa’s voice still coming through the phone.
Vanessa stayed silent.
Simone whispered:
“I thought the investment would work.””
Rebecca looked at the documents.
“Did you take out a loan?””
Simone nodded.
“Yes.””
“Against the property?””
Another nod.
Evelyn covered her mouth.
“My home.””
The words broke something.
Not loudly.
Quietly.
Simone looked at her mother.
“I was going to pay it back before you knew.””
Evelyn’s eyes filled.
“You weren’t protecting me.””
Simone looked hurt.
“Yes, I was.””
“No.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“You were protecting yourself.””
That sentence stayed with me.
Because it was true.
Simone had spent years confusing hiding consequences with solving problems.
Marcus looked exhausted.
“When did you do this?””
Simone hesitated.
“Two months ago.””
His eyes widened.
“Two months?””
She nodded.
“You signed paperwork two months ago?””
“Yes.””
“And you still planned this wedding?””
“I thought I could fix it.””
He turned away.
I had never seen someone lose trust in real time before.
It wasn’t like anger.
Anger burns quickly.
Trust disappears slowly.
Piece by piece.
Marcus looked at Rebecca.
“What happens now?””
Rebecca answered carefully.
“The loan and investment situation will need legal review.””
Evelyn looked terrified.
“Can we lose the house?””
Rebecca didn’t answer immediately.
That pause said everything.
“We need to understand the agreements first.””
Simone stood.
“Mom, I’m sorry.””
Evelyn looked at her daughter.
“You’re sorry because you got caught.””
“No.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Simone had no answer.
Because that was the question underneath everything.
Not where the money went.
Not who received it.
Why did she believe everyone would rather live with a lie than face the truth?
Marcus picked up the catering card from the table.
He looked at my name.
Then Simone’s signature.
A simple piece of paper.
A small agreement.
But it had exposed everything.
“I need to leave.””
Simone immediately grabbed his arm.
“Marcus.””
He stopped.
“Please.””
He looked at her hand.
Then gently moved away.
“I came here thinking I was marrying someone who trusted me.””
Her face fell.
“I do trust you.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You trusted me enough to pay for a life you couldn’t afford.””
The words cut through the room.
Marcus looked at me.
“Darius.””
“Yeah?””
“I’m sorry.””
I nodded.
“I know.””
He looked toward the ballroom doors.
Then walked away.
Not dramatically.
Not angrily.
Just slowly.
Like someone carrying a weight nobody else could see.
Simone watched him leave.
And for the first time all day…
She wasn’t worried about the wedding.
She was worried about losing him.
After Marcus disappeared through the doors, nobody spoke.
Then Rebecca looked down at the file again.
“I need to ask one more question.””
Simone looked at her.
“What?””
Rebecca turned a page.
“Who authorized the first transfer?””
Simone frowned.
“I did.””
Rebecca shook her head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
“The first transfer was made before you had access to the account.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
Rebecca looked at the documents.
“There is another signature.””
Simone’s face changed.
“What signature?””
Rebecca lifted the paper.
And read the name.
The name that made Evelyn stand completely still.
May you like
Because the person who started everything…
Was not Simone.
