Chapter 14: The Truth Nobody Expected

Nobody spoke after Rebecca said the name.

Not because they didn’t understand.

Because they couldn’t.

Evelyn stared at the document.

Her face had gone pale.

“No.””

Rebecca looked at her.

“Yes.””

I watched my mother’s hands begin to shake.

“What does it say?””

Rebecca answered calmly.

“The first transfer required two signatures.””

Marcus had not gone far.

He was standing near the ballroom entrance.

When he heard that, he turned around.

“What two signatures?””

Rebecca looked at the document.

“One from Simone.””

She paused.

“And one from Evelyn Carter.””

The room exploded.

“What?””

Simone looked at her mother.

“Mom?””

Evelyn stepped backward.

“No.””

Everyone stared.

She shook her head.

“I didn’t know what she was doing.””

Rebecca looked at the papers.

“You signed approval.””

“I thought it was for the wedding expenses.””

Marcus walked closer.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Evelyn looked ashamed.

Because she knew.

She knew the answer before she said it.

“Because I was protecting my daughter.””

Silence.

I felt my chest tighten.

Because suddenly the story wasn’t about one person making a mistake.

It was about a family protecting secrets until those secrets destroyed everything.

Marcus looked at both of them.

“So everyone knew something.””

“No,” Evelyn said.

“Not everyone.””

She looked at me.

“I swear, Darius.””

I believed she meant it.

But belief had become complicated.

She continued:

“I knew Simone was struggling.””

Simone looked at her.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you help me?””

Evelyn’s eyes filled.

“I tried.””

“No.””

Simone shook her head.

“You helped me hide.””

That sentence hurt everyone.

Because it was true.

Evelyn sat down.

“I thought I was giving you time.””

“And you gave me permission to keep lying.””

Nobody corrected her.

Because nobody could.

Marcus looked at me.

“I owe you an apology too.””

I shook my head.

“Marcus.””

“No.””

He looked serious.

“I believed a story because it was easier than asking questions.””

I understood that.

Because sometimes people believe beautiful things because ugly truths are harder to accept.

Rebecca closed the folder.

“I need everyone to understand something.””

Everyone looked at her.

“The financial issue can be addressed.””

She looked at Simone.

“But the bigger issue is documentation.””

“What does that mean?”” Marcus asked.

Rebecca answered:

“There are records showing false statements were made to multiple people.””

Simone’s eyes widened.

“False statements?””

“Yes.””

Rebecca looked at the catering card.

“Statements about payments.””

Then the venue notice.

“Statements about contracts.””

Then the loan documents.

“And statements about ownership.””

Simone sat down.

It was finally happening.

The moment where every small lie connected.

Marcus looked at her.

“Why?””

She didn’t answer.

“Why did you keep going?””

A long silence.

Then Simone whispered:

“Because every time I fixed one problem, another one appeared.””

Marcus stared.

“And instead of telling me…”

“I was ashamed.””

Her voice broke.

“I thought you would see me differently.””

Marcus looked away.

“I would have seen you as someone who needed help.””

She cried harder.

“But now?””

He didn’t answer.

Because now the answer was obvious.

Now he saw someone who had taken help away by refusing to ask for it.

I walked toward the table.

The tiny appetizer plate was still sitting there.

A ridiculous little piece of food that had started everything.

I picked it up.

And I realized something.

The smallest thing had revealed the biggest truth.

Not because of the plate.

Because Simone’s first reaction wasn’t to ask what happened.

It was to blame someone.

And that was the moment everything began falling apart.

Rebecca gathered the papers.

“I’ll need copies of all agreements.””

Evelyn nodded.

“I understand.””

Simone looked at me.

“Darius.””

I stopped.

Her voice was barely audible.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

The old me wanted to immediately forgive her.

Because she was my sister.

Because family mattered.

But the new me understood something.

Forgiveness doesn’t mean pretending something never happened.

“I believe you’re sorry.””

Her eyes filled.

“But I need you to understand what you did.””

She nodded.

“I do.””

“No.””

I looked at the signed card.

“You will.””

She looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

Before I could answer, Marcus’s phone rang.

He looked down.

Everyone watched.

His expression changed.

Again.

“What is it?”” Simone asked.

He didn’t respond.

He just stared at the screen.

Then he looked at Rebecca.

“It’s the bank.””

Rebecca stepped closer.

“Answer it.””

Marcus did.

“Hello?””

Everyone waited.

Then his face changed.

“Are you sure?””

A pause.

He looked at Simone.

Then at me.

Then at Evelyn.

And finally he said:

“Someone just made a payment.””

Simone’s eyes widened.

“Who?””

Marcus listened.

Then slowly lowered the phone.

The answer shocked everyone.

Because the person who had just saved the situation…

Was the last person anyone expected.
