Chapter 10: The Daughter Who Remembered

Darius stared at the little girl standing at the top of the staircase.

Amara.

Seven years had passed since he'd last seen her.

Yet somehow, his body knew her before his mind did.

The shape of her eyes.

The tiny tilt of her head.

The way she held one hand against the railing when she was frightened.

Darius whispered, “Amara?””

The girl nodded.

“Dad.””

His knees nearly gave out.

Naomi covered her mouth, tears streaming down her face.

“Oh, baby…”

Amara looked at her.

“Mom.””

Naomi ran up the stairs.

The man behind Amara stepped forward.

Darius stopped her.

“Don't.””

The man's face was his.

Same jaw.

Same eyes.

Same scar.

But there was something wrong with his expression.

Too calm.

Too empty.

Darius stepped toward him.

“Who are you?””

The man smiled.

“You already know.””

“No.””

“You've spent seven years trying not to.””

Darius looked at Evelyn.

His mother was crying.

“You created him?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“Your father did.””

Darius looked back at the man.

“What are you?””

The man answered quietly.

“I'm what your father thought you should become.””

Darius clenched his fists.

“Where is my father?””

The man's smile disappeared.

“Dead.””

The ballroom went silent.

Darius looked at Evelyn.

“Is that true?””

She nodded.

“He died three years ago.””

“Then who have I been fighting?””

“His work.””

Darius looked at Amara.

The girl was crying now.

“Dad, he told me you forgot me.””

Darius's heart broke.

“I didn't forget you.””

Amara looked at him.

“You did.””

He swallowed.

“I was made to.””

The duplicate stepped toward her.

“Come here, Amara.””

She immediately stepped behind Naomi.

Darius moved between them.

“You're not touching her.””

The duplicate laughed.

“You still protect them.””

“I always will.””

“You don't remember why.””

Darius's eyes narrowed.

“I remember enough.””

The duplicate looked at Camille.

“Tell him.””

Camille was trembling.

“No.””

“Tell him what happened after the fire.””

Darius turned.

“Camille.””

She closed her eyes.

“When the fire started, your father ordered me to take Amara.””

“Where?””

“To the laboratory.””

Darius's expression hardened.

“Why?””

“He wanted to transfer her memories.””

Naomi gasped.

“Amara was three months old.””

“He didn't care.””

Darius looked at the duplicate.

“And you?””

“I was the result.””

Camille nodded.

“He had copied Darius's neural patterns before the fire.””

Darius stared.

“He made you from me?””

“Not exactly.””

The duplicate touched his own face.

“He made me from your memories.””

Darius whispered, “Why?””

“To replace you.””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Your father believed the original Darius was too emotional. Too loyal. Too difficult to control.””

Darius looked at his mother.

“So he made another one.””

“Yes.””

Naomi stared at the duplicate.

“And you helped him.””

Camille looked at her.

“I was a child.””

“You were still there.””

“I tried to stop it.””

“You handed him our daughter.””

“I thought she would survive.””

Amara suddenly spoke.

“She did.””

Everyone looked at her.

She wiped her tears.

“I survived because Zoe helped me.””

Darius turned.

“Zoe?””

The little girl stood near the doorway.

Amara smiled at her.

“We were together.””

Zoe nodded.

“You were crying.””

“I was scared.””

“I told you Dad would come.””

Darius looked between the two girls.

“You knew each other?””

Amara nodded.

“Before the fire.””

Darius's eyes widened.

“You remember?””

“Yes.””

The duplicate's expression changed.

For the first time, fear appeared.

Amara pointed at him.

“He doesn't.””

Darius looked at her.

“What?””

“He has your face.””

She stepped closer.

“But he doesn't have your heart.””

The duplicate lunged.

Darius moved instantly.

He tackled him halfway down the stairs.

The ballroom exploded into chaos.

Guests scattered.

Chairs crashed.

A champagne glass shattered against the marble.

The duplicate fought with terrifying precision, anticipating every movement.

Darius blocked a punch.

The duplicate smiled.

“You see?””

Darius slammed him against the railing.

“We're the same.””

“No.””

Darius drove his shoulder into him.

“You're not me.””

The duplicate grabbed Darius's jacket.

“I know every move you'll make.””

Darius stared directly into his eyes.

“Then you should know this one.””

He released his grip.

The duplicate stumbled forward.

Darius stepped aside.

The man crashed through the wooden railing and landed hard on the floor below.

He didn't move.

Naomi screamed.

“Darius!””

Darius rushed down.

The duplicate opened his eyes.

He reached weakly toward him.

“Why?””

Darius crouched.

“Because you're not my enemy.””

The duplicate stared.

“What?””

“You were made.””

Darius extended his hand.

“But you still get to choose.””

The man's expression broke.

For the first time, he looked almost human.

“I don't know how.””

Darius said, “Neither did I.””

The duplicate took his hand.

Darius pulled him up.

Behind them, police sirens began approaching outside the mansion.

Marcus looked at the ballroom doors.

“I called them.””

Camille stared at him.

“You promised.””

Marcus shook his head.

“I promised to protect the children.””

Darius looked at Camille.

She lowered her eyes.

“I'm sorry.””

He stood silently.

Then Amara ran down the stairs.

“Dad!””

Darius turned.

She crashed into his arms.

He held her tightly.

For seven years, he had carried an empty space inside himself without knowing its name.

Now he finally understood.

It had always been her.

His daughter.

His memory.

His reason to come home.

Naomi wrapped her arms around both of them.

Zoe stood a few feet away, smiling.

Darius reached for her.

“You too.””

Zoe ran into the embrace.

For a moment, the mansion was quiet.

No secrets.

No locked doors.

No hidden cameras.

No voices pretending to be someone they weren't.

Then Darius noticed Camille standing alone beside the old wooden doors.

She was holding something.

A final envelope.

She looked at him.

“This was meant for you.””

Darius took it.

Inside was a photograph.

Not of the fire.

Not of the laboratory.

Not of Amara.

It was a photograph of Darius, Naomi, Amara, and Zoe standing together.

But the date on the back was tomorrow.

Darius stared at it.

Naomi looked over his shoulder.

“How is that possible?””

Darius turned the photograph over.

On the back, written in his own handwriting, were six words:

*THE FIRST EXPERIMENT WASN'T THE DUPLICATE.*

Darius looked toward Evelyn.

His mother had gone pale.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn slowly shook her head.

“I don't know.””

Then Amara tugged Darius's sleeve.

“Dad?””

He looked down.

“Yes?””

She pointed toward the locked room.

“There's one more door.””

Darius turned.

Behind the portrait, hidden beneath the wall paneling, a thin seam had appeared.

A door.

One nobody had seen.

One nobody had mentioned.

Darius looked at Naomi.

She whispered, “Don't open it.””

He almost smiled.

Seven years ago, he might have listened.

Tonight, he reached for the handle.

The door opened.

Inside was a single chair.

A camera.

And a monitor displaying one sentence:

*WELCOME BACK, DARIUS.*

The screen flickered.

Then a video appeared.

A man sat in the chair.

Darius.

But this version looked older.

Tired.

Terrified.

He leaned toward the camera.

“If you're watching this, they failed to erase everything.””

Darius stopped breathing.

The recording continued.

“I need you to listen carefully.””

The older Darius looked directly into the camera.

“Your father didn't create the duplicate.””

A pause.

“He created you.””

Darius's face went blank.

Naomi whispered, “No…”

The recording continued.

“You are not the original Darius.””

The screen went black.

Then one final line appeared:

*THE ORIGINAL IS STILL ALIVE.*

Darius stared at the words.

Behind him, Amara took his hand.

“Dad?””

He squeezed it.

“I’m here.””

And for the first time that night, Darius understood the real mystery.

The locked door had never been hiding a child.

It had been hiding the truth about him.

And somewhere inside that mansion, the real Darius was still waiting.

The screen flickered one last time.

A live camera feed appeared.

It showed a dark room.

A man sat alone in a chair.

His face was Darius's.

His eyes opened.

He looked directly into the camera.

And smiled.

May you like

The feed cut.

*THE END.*
