Chapter 7: The Woman Who Remembered

Nobody breathed.

Naomi stood beneath the chandelier, one hand resting against the closed ballroom doors.

Darius stared at her as if the entire room had shifted around him.

“You're alive.””

Naomi's eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

Darius took one step toward her.

Then another.

“Amara…”

Naomi shook her head.

“She's safe.””

“Where?””

“Not here.””

Darius stopped.

“Then who was behind that door?””

Naomi looked toward Camille.

“Someone who wanted you to believe your daughter was dead.””

Camille's face twisted.

“You weren't supposed to come back.””

Naomi laughed once, bitterly.

“You spent seven years making sure I couldn't.””

Darius looked between them.

“Seven years?””

Naomi nodded.

“Seven years of waking up every morning and wondering whether you'd remember me.””

Darius touched his forehead.

Fragments flashed through his mind.

A hospital corridor.

A woman's hand squeezing his.

A baby's cry.

Smoke.

A little girl hiding beneath a table.

Then nothing.

He staggered.

Naomi rushed toward him.

“Darius!””

He caught himself against a table.

“Don't touch me.””

Naomi stopped.

His words hurt her.

He saw it immediately.

“I'm sorry.””

“You don't have to apologize.””

“I don't know what's real.””

Naomi's voice softened.

“Then ask me.””

Darius looked at her.

“Were we married?””

“Yes.””

“Was Amara our daughter?””

“Yes.””

“Did she die?””

“No.””

Darius swallowed.

“Did Camille know?””

Naomi turned toward Camille.

“She knew everything.””

Camille shook her head.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From me?””

“From what you remembered.””

Naomi stepped forward.

“You're still doing it.””

Camille's eyes hardened.

“You don't know what happened that night.””

“I remember enough.””

“You remember what my father wanted you to remember.””

Naomi's expression changed.

Darius noticed.

“What does that mean?””

Naomi looked at him.

“It means the fire wasn't an accident.””

The guests reacted instantly.

A man near the champagne table whispered, “Oh my God.””

Darius's voice dropped.

“Who started it?””

Naomi didn't answer.

Camille did.

“My father.””

Silence.

Darius stared at her.

“Why?””

“Because Naomi found the records.””

“What records?””

“The experiments.””

Naomi stepped closer.

“He had files on everyone.””

Darius looked around the ballroom.

“Everyone?””

Naomi nodded.

“People who attended his parties. Employees. Friends.

Family. Anyone he could manipulate.””

Marcus suddenly spoke.

“He had mine too.””

Darius turned.

Marcus looked ashamed.

“He knew about the hospital. He knew I helped Naomi escape.””

Naomi nodded.

“And he knew Marcus would protect us.””

Camille's voice cracked.

“My father threatened my family.””

Naomi stared at her.

“So you betrayed us.””

“I was seventeen!””

“You were old enough to make a choice.””

“I was scared!””

“You chose him.””

Camille's eyes filled.

“I chose to keep Darius alive.””

Darius stepped between them.

“Enough.””

He looked at Naomi.

“If you escaped the fire, why didn't you come back?””

Naomi hesitated.

“Because I was told you died.””

Darius's expression froze.

“What?””

“I woke up in a hospital under another name. They told me you hadn't survived.””

“Who told you?””

“My doctor.””

“And you believed him?””

“I had burns. I could barely walk. I didn't know where Amara was.””

Darius looked toward the dark room.

“And then?””

Naomi's eyes moved toward Zoe.

“I found her.””

Zoe stepped closer.

“You're the woman from my picture.””

Naomi knelt.

“Yes.””

“Are you my mom?””

Naomi looked at Darius.

Then Camille.

Then back at Zoe.

“I wish I could answer that.””

Zoe frowned.

“Why can't you?””

Naomi reached into her coat and pulled out a tiny photograph.

She handed it to Zoe.

The girl looked down.

Her face changed.

Darius crouched beside her.

“What is it?””

Zoe turned the photograph around.

It showed Naomi holding a baby.

Beside them stood a younger Camille.

But behind Camille was another woman.

A woman Darius didn't recognize.

Naomi pointed at her.

“That woman is the reason I came back tonight.””

Darius stared at the image.

“Who is she?””

Naomi whispered:

“Your mother.””

Darius went rigid.

“My mother died when I was a child.””

“No.””

Naomi shook her head.

“She disappeared.””

Camille suddenly lunged for the photograph.

Darius caught her wrist.

“Don't.””

Camille struggled.

“You don't know what you're doing!””

Naomi stood.

“Neither did you.””

Camille looked at her with hatred.

“You should have stayed dead.””

The ballroom doors behind Naomi suddenly unlocked.

A loud metallic click echoed through the room.

Everyone turned.

The doors opened by themselves.

Inside stood a tall Black woman in a black evening gown.

Her face was calm.

Her eyes were fixed on Darius.

Naomi's face went pale.

Darius whispered, “Who is that?””

Naomi grabbed his arm.

“Don't let her touch you.””

The woman smiled.

May you like

Then she said one sentence.

“Hello, son.””
