Chapter 6: The Price of Becoming Family

Daniel stared at Renee as if he had never seen her before.

The bank statement lay between them on the walnut desk. His father's handwriting was unmistakable, but the meaning of the note was not.

Payment to R.

Final installment.

Loretta gripped the edge of the desk.

“Thomas would never pay someone to marry his son.””

Renee let out a broken laugh.

“You still believe you knew everything about him.””

“I was married to him for thirty-seven years.””

“And I was the person he called when he couldn't trust his own family.””

Daniel stepped between them.

“Stop talking in riddles. What did Dad pay you for?””

Renee looked at him.

“You want the truth? Fine.””

She removed a second document from her handbag.

This one was older, its edges worn from being folded and unfolded. A notary's seal appeared near the bottom.

“I met your father before I met you,” she said.

Daniel frowned.

“You met him at the construction company?””

“No. At a private financial office downtown. I was working there as an assistant while I finished my business courses.””

Loretta's expression changed.

“What financial office?””

“Carter Development's accounting department.””

Daniel looked confused.

“My father didn't have a private financial office.””

“He did when he was investigating missing money from the company.””

Renee placed the document on the desk.

“He suspected someone was diverting funds through a series of shell companies. He hired me to organize records because I was temporary staff and had access to the old ledgers.””

Daniel picked up the paper.

“What does that have to do with our marriage?””

Renee took a shaky breath.

“Your father found out I had copied some of those records. He thought I was involved in the theft.””

“Were you?””

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

Loretta crossed her arms.

“Then why would he pay you?””

“Because I had discovered who was actually taking the money.””

Renee turned toward Daniel.

“I found transactions connected to a company called Westbridge Holdings. Your father told me to keep the records safe while he gathered evidence. He said he would protect me if the investigation reached the wrong people.””

“And did it?”” Daniel asked.

“Yes.””

Her voice cracked.

“Someone broke into my apartment. They took my computer and threatened my family. I went to your father because he promised to help me.””

Loretta's face had gone pale.

“Thomas never told me about this.””

“He couldn't. He believed someone close to the company was listening to his calls.””

Daniel examined the old document.

At the top was the name of a company he recognized from his father's estate papers.

Westbridge Holdings.

He looked up.

“Who owned it?””

Renee's eyes moved toward Loretta.

“That's what your father was trying to prove.””

“Who owned it?”” Daniel repeated.

“I never found out for certain.””

“You expect me to believe you married me because of a financial investigation?””

“No.”” Renee wiped her cheeks.

“I married you because I fell in love with you.””

“Then why did Dad pay you?””

Renee looked down at the bank statement.

“He paid me to keep the records safe and stay away from the investigation until he could prove who was behind it. The final installment was supposed to be compensation for the danger I had been exposed to.””

Loretta shook her head.

“Then why didn't you tell Daniel any of this?””

“Because your father made me promise not to.””

“Thomas is dead,” Loretta replied.

“That promise no longer protects anyone.””

Renee looked toward the window.

“And if I tell you everything, I could lose more than this house.””

Daniel lowered the document.

“More than the house? What does that mean?””

Renee didn't answer.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Mrs. Carter, if you have evidence connected to the disputed sale, you need to preserve it. But I should be clear: nothing you've said establishes that the sale agreement is legitimate, and nothing establishes that the old payments were connected to the current transaction.””

Renee nodded stiffly.

“I know.””

“Then why bring up the payments now?””

“Because Daniel thinks I'm a monster who woke up this morning and decided to destroy his daughter's Christmas.””

She glanced toward the hallway.

Maya was standing there, holding the wooden star.

Her eyes were fixed on Renee.

Renee's voice weakened.

“I didn't plan to knock over the tree.””

Maya stepped closer to her father.

“You still did it.””

Renee looked at the little girl.

For once, she didn't have a sharp answer ready.

“Yes,” she said quietly.

“I did.””

Maya's fingers tightened around the star.

“Why?””

Renee swallowed.

“Because I was angry.””

“At me?””

“At everything.””

“That isn't fair.””

“No,” Renee whispered.

“It wasn't.””

Daniel placed a hand on Maya's shoulder.

“You don't have to forgive anyone right now, sweetheart.””

Maya nodded, then turned toward the photograph of her mother.

“I just wanted Christmas to feel like it used to.””

Daniel crouched beside her.

“I know.””

“Mommy always let me hang the first ornament.””

“I remember.””

“She said the tree wasn't finished until everybody had put something on it.””

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

He pulled Maya into his arms.

“We can start again with a smaller tree if we need to. We can make new traditions. But nobody gets to make you feel like your memories are a problem.””

Maya buried her face against his shoulder.

Behind them, Loretta quietly collected the scattered papers.

She had spent eleven years believing that keeping Thomas's secrets was a way of protecting her family.

Now she wondered how many of those secrets had protected someone else instead.

Vanessa examined the bank statement one more time.

“Mr. Carter, I recommend that we secure these documents and arrange for an independent review of the property records and financial transactions.””

Daniel nodded.

“Do whatever is necessary to stop the sale.””

“I'll contact the relevant parties and request that the transfer be placed on hold while the dispute is investigated.””

Renee looked up sharply.

“You can't freeze everything.””

“I'm not freezing your personal finances,” Vanessa replied.

“I'm addressing a disputed transaction involving a property you do not appear to own.””

Renee's face flushed.

“You don't understand what happens if the sale falls through.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“Then tell us.””

She shook her head.

“I can't.””

“Why?””

“Because the person who arranged the sale isn't the person you need to be afraid of.””

Loretta slowly lowered the papers.

“Who should we be afraid of?””

Renee looked at the bank statement.

“Whoever owns Westbridge Holdings.””

Daniel took out his phone and searched his father's old business records. He had seen the name before, buried in an estate inventory, but he'd never investigated it.

He found a scanned document dated two months before Thomas's death.

It listed Westbridge Holdings as the recipient of several transfers from a company associated with Carter Development.

The final page carried a handwritten annotation.

*Beneficial owner verified. Keep this from Daniel until the trust is activated.*

Daniel read the note aloud.

His mother stepped toward him.

“Let me see that.””

He handed her the phone.

Loretta studied the screen.

Then she sat down heavily in Thomas's old chair.

“Oh, Thomas.””

Daniel crouched beside her.

“Mom, what is it?””

She shook her head, tears gathering in her eyes.

“I thought I had buried this with him.””

“Buried what?””

Loretta looked at Renee.

“You knew about Westbridge before you married my son.””

Renee didn't deny it.

“And you knew Thomas was investigating it.””

“Yes.””

Loretta's voice broke.

“Then why did you enter this family?””

Renee closed her eyes.

“Because he asked me to.””

Daniel stood abruptly.

“What?””

Renee opened her eyes.

“Your father asked me to get close to you.””

The room went silent.

Maya looked up from her father's side.

Loretta rose so quickly that her chair scraped across the floor.

“You are lying.””

“I wish I were.””

Daniel's face was bloodless.

“Are you telling me my father arranged our relationship?””

“No. He arranged our first meeting. Everything after that was supposed to be my decision.””

“Supposed to be?””

Renee began crying again.

“He said he needed someone he could trust near you if something happened to him. Someone who could watch for signs that the people behind Westbridge were approaching you.””

Daniel stepped away from her.

“So you married me to spy on me?””

“I married you because I loved you.””

“You just said my father asked you to get close to me!””

“He did. But I didn't have to fall in love with you. I didn't have to stay. I could have walked away.””

Daniel shook his head.

“How long were you going to keep this from me?””

“Forever, if I could.””

Loretta pressed a hand to her chest.

“Thomas would never have wanted this.””

Renee looked at her with desperate intensity.

“You don't know what he wanted near the end. He was terrified, Loretta. He believed the company investigation would destroy the family if the truth came out.””

Daniel turned back toward the desk.

The bank statement, the trust document, and the forged sale agreement lay side by side.

Three pieces of a story that had been hidden from him for years.

Then Maya tugged gently at his sleeve.

“Daddy?””

He looked down.

“Yeah, sweetheart?””

“Is Renee going to leave us?””

Daniel glanced at his wife.

Renee was staring at the floor, her shoulders shaking.

“I don't know yet,” he admitted.

Maya looked toward the ruined tree downstairs.

“Can Grandma stay?””

Loretta immediately knelt and opened her arms.

“Always, baby.””

Maya went to her.

As Loretta held her granddaughter, Daniel noticed a final page tucked beneath the old financial records. It bore the logo of Westbridge Holdings and a list of its directors.

One name had been circled in red ink.

*Renee Carter.*

Below it was a date: six months before her wedding to Daniel.

Daniel lifted the page.

“You said you never knew who owned Westbridge.””

Renee stopped crying.

He turned the paper toward her.

“Then why were you listed as a director?””

Renee stared at the document.

For several seconds, she looked as though she might faint.

Then she whispered, “Because I wasn't supposed to survive long enough for anyone to ask.””

And from downstairs, Daniel's phone began ringing.

May you like

The caller ID displayed a name he hadn't seen in eleven years.

*THOMAS CARTER.*
