Chapter 7: The Phone Call From a Dead Man

Daniel stared at his phone.

The name on the screen seemed impossible.

THOMAS CARTER.

His father had been dead for eleven years. Daniel had personally canceled his father's old mobile account after the funeral. He remembered standing in a service center, signing paperwork while Loretta waited outside with a box of funeral programs on her lap.

Yet the phone continued ringing.

Maya lifted her head from her grandmother's shoulder.

“Daddy, who's calling?””

Daniel couldn't answer.

Renee backed away from the desk.

“Don't pick up.””

Her words cut through the room.

Daniel slowly turned toward her.

“Why?””

“Because it's a scam.””

“From my dead father's number?””

“Numbers get reassigned. Anyone can make a caller ID look like something else.””

Vanessa Brooks reached for her own phone.

“She's right about one thing. Caller ID can be manipulated. Don't assume the caller is who the screen says it is.””

Daniel looked at Renee.

“But you knew it was coming.””

“I didn't.””

“Then why did you tell me not to answer?””

Renee opened her mouth, then closed it.

The ringing stopped.

A second later, a voicemail notification appeared.

Daniel pressed play.

At first, there was only static.

Then a man's voice emerged, low and familiar.

“Daniel, if you're hearing this, the house has become part of the problem.””

Daniel's knees nearly buckled.

He knew that voice.

The slight rasp. The deliberate pauses. The way his father pronounced his name as if every syllable mattered.

Maya slipped from Loretta's arms and approached him.

“Daddy? Is that Grandpa?””

Daniel nodded, unable to speak.

The recording continued.

“Do not trust the person who tells you the trust was created to protect the house. It was created to protect you. If Westbridge has surfaced again, someone has failed to keep the original agreement.””

A pause followed.

Then Thomas's voice became sharper.

“Find the blue ledger. The truth about the company is inside it. And Daniel, whatever you discover about Renee, remember that a person can be used by evil without understanding the entire plan.””

The message ended.

Nobody moved.

Daniel replayed the final sentence.

A person can be used by evil without understanding the entire plan.

Renee sank into a chair.

Loretta stared at the phone.

“That sounds like Thomas,” she whispered.

Vanessa shook her head carefully.

“It could be an old recording. We need to verify where it came from and when it was created.””

Daniel checked the voicemail details.

The message had arrived from an unfamiliar number, but the displayed contact name had been attached automatically by his phone.

He looked at Renee.

“Did you arrange this?””

“No.””

“Do you know what the blue ledger is?””

She stared at him.

“Yes.””

Daniel's face tightened.

“Where is it?””

“I don't know.””

“Renee.””

“I swear I don't know where it is now.””

Loretta stood.

“You've known about this ledger all along?””

Renee wiped her cheeks.

“Your husband showed it to me once. He told me it contained the original financial records from the Westbridge investigation.””

“Where did he keep it?””

“In a blue metal box.””

Daniel looked toward his father's desk.

“There was a box here.””

“Not that one,” Renee said.

“The ledger was kept in a fireproof safe. Thomas told me the combination would only make sense to someone who knew his family.””

Loretta's eyes narrowed.

“What combination?””

Renee shook her head.

“He never told me.””

Daniel searched the study again. He opened the cabinets, examined the bookshelves, and pulled the desk away from the wall. Behind a row of old reference books, he found a narrow metal panel.

He pressed it.

Nothing happened.

Then Maya spoke.

“Grandpa had a secret place.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“What do you mean?””

“When I was little, he played treasure hunt with me in here. He said the best hiding places were where people looked every day but never really saw.””

She pointed toward the bookshelf.

“Grandpa always touched that blue book before he left the room.””

Daniel scanned the titles.

A thick blue volume stood between two books about architecture. Its spine was worn, and a faint layer of dust covered its top.

He pulled it free.

Behind it was a small recessed safe.

Loretta covered her mouth.

“Thomas.””

Daniel examined the keypad.

Four digits.

He tried his father's birthday.

Wrong.

He tried the date of his parents' wedding.

Wrong.

He looked at Maya.

“What was the treasure hunt about?””

Maya thought carefully.

“Grandpa said I had to remember the day the family got bigger.””

Daniel stared at her.

“The day you were born?””

“No. The day Mommy came home from the hospital with me.””

He remembered it instantly.

Claire had arrived home with newborn Maya on a bright spring afternoon. Thomas had hung a little wooden sign on the front door that read, OUR FAMILY HAS GROWN.

Daniel entered the date.

The safe clicked open.

Inside sat a blue ledger, a small flash drive, and a sealed envelope addressed to Loretta.

Daniel lifted the ledger.

Its pages were filled with handwritten transactions, company names, dates, and initials. Several entries were highlighted in red.

Vanessa moved closer.

“This could be significant evidence. We shouldn't alter or remove anything unnecessarily. I'll document what we've found and arrange for a forensic review.””

Daniel opened the envelope.

Inside was a short letter.

Loretta,

If Daniel has found the ledger, then the agreement has been breached.

The person who appears to have betrayed us may be the only one who can explain what really happened.

Do not let fear turn our family against itself before you know who was directing the operation.

And remember: the original owner of Westbridge was never the person whose name appeared on its public records.

Loretta lowered the letter.

“Who was the original owner?””

Daniel turned to the ledger's final pages.

There, beside a list of transfers, was a handwritten name.

*Evelyn Brooks.*

Vanessa froze.

“That's my mother's name.””

Everyone looked at her.

Vanessa stepped closer to the ledger.

“My mother died when I was twenty-two. She worked in corporate accounting for several years, but I never knew anything about Westbridge.””

Daniel held up the page.

“Your mother's name is here beside a transfer of ownership dated eleven years ago.””

Vanessa stared at the entry.

“That can't be right.””

Renee rose unsteadily.

“Evelyn Brooks was the person who originally hired me.””

Vanessa turned sharply.

“You knew my mother?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Renee looked at the ledger.

“She recruited me to work with Thomas. She said the company was being used to move money out of Carter Development.””

Vanessa's voice became cold.

“Why didn't you tell me when I arrived?””

“Because I didn't know you were Evelyn's daughter until you introduced yourself.””

Vanessa took a step back.

“My mother died believing she'd failed to expose whoever was stealing that money.””

Renee lowered her eyes.

“She didn't fail.””

“Then who did?””

Before Renee could answer, Daniel found another page in the ledger.

A list of names appeared beneath the heading BENEFICIAL CONTROL.

One name had been crossed out.

Another had been written beside it in fresh black ink.

Daniel read it aloud.

“Thomas Carter.””

Loretta frowned.

“That makes no sense.””

Vanessa examined the page.

“The entry was amended recently. The ink is newer than the original records.””

Daniel looked at Renee.

“Who changed this?””

She shook her head.

“I don't know.””

Then Maya pointed toward the bottom of the page.

“Daddy, there's another name.””

Beneath Thomas's name, written in smaller letters, was a final entry.

*CURRENT CONTROLLING INTEREST: DANIEL CARTER.*

Daniel stared at the words.

He had never owned Westbridge.

He had never managed its accounts.

He had never signed a document authorizing its transfer.

Yet someone had designated him as its controlling interest.

Vanessa slowly closed the ledger.

“Daniel, I think your father was trying to tell you something very specific.””

“What?””

“That whoever is behind this sale doesn't merely want your house.””

She looked at the phone still resting on the desk.

“They want control of something your father left in your name.””

Daniel's phone vibrated again.

A new message appeared from the same unknown number.

*YOU HAVE THE LEDGER. NOW ASK RENEE WHAT SHE DID ON THE NIGHT YOUR FATHER DIED.*

Daniel looked up.

May you like

Renee had gone completely white.

And this time, she didn't deny knowing the answer.
