Chapter 1: Take That Baby and Get Out
“Take that baby and get out.””
Victoria Bennett’s voice cracked across the luxurious hotel lobby, sharp enough to silence the conversations beneath the chandeliers.
Naomi Bennett stood on the polished marble floor, clutching her newborn daughter against her cream dress. Her long dark hair fell across her tear-streaked cheeks. Her arms trembled from exhaustion, and the pale pink blanket wrapped around the baby had slipped dangerously close to her tiny face.
“Daniel?”” Naomi whispered.
Her husband stood beside his mother in a perfectly tailored black suit.
He looked at Naomi.
Then he looked away.
For a moment, the only sounds were the soft clatter of luggage wheels and the distant hum of traffic beyond the enormous windows.
Naomi swallowed hard.
“Daniel, please tell me she doesn't mean that.””
Victoria adjusted the diamond bracelet on her wrist. Her hot-pink dress caught the chandelier light as she stepped closer, her expression suggesting that Naomi had embarrassed her simply by existing.
“You heard me,” Victoria said.
“This family doesn't need you anymore.””
Naomi stared at her husband.
“I just gave birth to your daughter.””
“And nobody is taking your child away,” Victoria replied smoothly.
“You're perfectly free to leave with her.””
She pointed toward the revolving entrance.
“Now.””
Daniel rubbed his jaw, refusing to meet Naomi's eyes.
“Just leave, Naomi.””
The words landed harder than Victoria's shouting.
Naomi's lips parted. Her breathing became uneven. She looked down at the sleeping baby pressed against her chest, then back at the man who had promised to protect them both.
“You're letting your mother throw your wife and daughter out of a hotel?””
Daniel finally looked at her.
“I don't want to do this here.””
“Then where?”” Naomi demanded.
“In our home? The home your mother suddenly says I don't belong in? Or maybe in the hospital parking lot, where you left me waiting yesterday?””
Victoria's smile disappeared for half a second.
“Careful, Naomi. Don't start making accusations you can't prove.””
Naomi turned toward her.
“What did I do to you?””
“You married my son.””
Victoria delivered the answer without hesitation.
Naomi blinked.
Victoria continued, loud enough for several nearby guests to hear.
“You arrived in this family with nothing. My son gave you a life you could never have afforded yourself. And this is how you repay him?””
“Mom,” Daniel muttered.
Victoria immediately faced him.
“Don't you dare interrupt me after everything I've done for you.””
Daniel fell silent again.
Naomi watched the exchange, something inside her shifting. Her husband wasn't simply afraid of upsetting his mother. He was accustomed to surrendering to her.
And today, he had decided that surrendering was easier than defending his own family.
Naomi tightened the blanket around her daughter.
“Look at her, Daniel.””
He didn't move.
“Please. Just look at your daughter.””
For one brief moment, Daniel's gaze dropped to the baby. His expression softened, almost imperceptibly.
Then Victoria touched his arm.
“Remember what we discussed,” she murmured.
Daniel's face hardened again.
“I said leave.””
Naomi's tears spilled faster. She backed away, one careful step at a time, afraid that if she moved too quickly, her knees would give out.
“You'll regret this,” she whispered.
Victoria laughed.
“Is that a threat?””
“No,” Naomi said, wiping her cheek with the back of her hand.
“It's a promise.””
She turned and crossed the marble lobby, carrying her daughter toward the enormous glass entrance. Every step seemed to echo through the room.
Behind her, Victoria called out.
“And don't come crawling back when you realize what you've lost!””
Naomi didn't answer.
Near the entrance, she stopped beside a tall marble column. Her fingers shook as she reached into her handbag and pulled out her phone.
She selected one contact.
The call connected immediately.
Naomi drew a trembling breath.
“It happened exactly like you said.””
A man's voice answered, low and controlled.
“Did he choose his mother?””
Naomi looked over her shoulder.
Daniel stood beside Victoria beneath the chandelier. His mother was speaking into his ear, gesturing impatiently, while he watched Naomi from across the lobby.
“Yes,” Naomi whispered.
“He chose her.””
The man on the phone paused.
Then his voice changed.
“Good. Don't leave the hotel.””
Naomi froze.
Across the lobby, Victoria reached up and straightened Daniel's tie, apparently satisfied with herself.
The man's next words made Naomi's fingers tighten around the phone.
“Daniel just triggered the clause.””
Naomi slowly turned toward her husband.
Daniel noticed her expression.
His eyebrows drew together.
“What clause?””

A sudden, piercing shock of sound seemed to split the silence.
And for the first time that afternoon, Victoria looked afraid.
