Chapter 2: The Call Nobody Expected

Daniel took a step toward Naomi.

“What clause?”” he repeated.

Naomi said nothing.

Her phone remained pressed against her ear. The baby stirred beneath the pink blanket, making a tiny sound that immediately pulled Naomi's attention back to the child in her arms.

Victoria recovered first.

“Daniel, stop embarrassing yourself.””

He turned toward her.

“You told me everything was settled.””

“It is settled.””

“Then why does she look like that?””

Victoria's manicured fingers closed around his wrist.

“Because she wants you to believe she's still in control.””

Across the lobby, Naomi heard the man on the phone breathe slowly.

“Naomi,” he said, “stay where you are. Don't explain anything to them.””

She lowered her voice.

“I'm holding my daughter. I can't do this again.””

“You won't have to do it alone.””

Those five words nearly broke her.

For days, Naomi had been surviving on short naps, hospital meals, and the stubborn belief that Daniel would eventually remember the man he had been before his mother began dictating every decision in their marriage.

Now a stranger's promise of support felt more solid than anything her husband had offered.

“Who are you?”” Naomi whispered.

The man didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he asked, “Did Victoria take the envelope?””

Naomi glanced toward the seating area.

A black leather handbag rested on the chair where Victoria had been sitting earlier. Beside it lay a cream-colored envelope with Naomi's name handwritten across the front.

Naomi's stomach tightened.

“Yes,” she whispered.

“She has it.””

“Did she open it?””

“I don't know.””

“Then listen carefully. Whatever happens next, don't sign anything.””

The call ended.

Naomi stared at the screen.

A second later, a message appeared from the same number.

*The witness is already inside.*

She looked up.

The hotel lobby suddenly seemed different. A woman in a navy suit stood near the reception desk, holding a slim leather folder. A security guard spoke quietly into his radio beside the elevators.

Nobody appeared to be watching Naomi.

But when she shifted her weight, the woman in the navy suit looked directly at her.

Then she nodded.

Naomi's pulse quickened.

She had expected a phone call. Perhaps a warning. Maybe even an apology from someone who had witnessed the cruelty she had endured.

She hadn't expected witnesses.

Behind her, Daniel approached with his hands held slightly away from his body, as if he were trying to calm a frightened animal.

“Naomi, we need to talk.””

She turned to face him.

“Now you want to talk?””

“Please lower your voice.””

“Why? Your mother had no problem announcing to the entire hotel that my baby and I aren't wanted.””

Daniel glanced toward several guests who had stopped pretending not to listen.

“I'm trying to handle this privately.””

“You had nine months to handle this privately, Daniel.””

His jaw tightened.

“Things have changed.””

“What things?””

He looked toward Victoria.

That was all the answer Naomi needed.

Victoria approached them, carrying the cream envelope against her chest.

“Give me the phone,” she ordered.

Naomi stared at her.

“Excuse me?””

“You've been recording us. Give it to me.””

“No, I haven't.””

“Then you won't mind letting me check.””

Victoria reached for the device.

Naomi stepped backward, instinctively shielding her daughter with her free arm.

“Don't touch me.””

A security guard immediately approached.

“Ma'am, is there a problem?””

Victoria's expression transformed. Her shoulders relaxed, and her voice became gentle.

“I'm afraid my daughter-in-law is having a difficult day. She's exhausted after childbirth, and she's becoming confused.””

Naomi felt the blood drain from her face.

There it was.

Not concern. Not kindness.

An excuse to make everyone believe she couldn't be trusted.

Daniel seized the opportunity.

“She's been under a lot of stress,” he told the guard.

“We just need a little space.””

Naomi stared at him in disbelief.

“You're doing this again.””

Daniel looked uncomfortable, but he didn't retract his words.

Victoria opened the envelope.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

Naomi recognized the handwriting immediately.

Her father's.

Although he had died three years earlier, she had spent her childhood watching him write birthday cards, grocery lists, and little notes he left beside her breakfast.

She knew every curve of his letters.

Victoria pulled the page free.

For the first time since Naomi had known her, the older woman's fingers began to shake.

Daniel noticed.

“Mom?””

Victoria folded the paper quickly.

“It's nothing.””

Naomi stepped forward.

“That's my father's handwriting.””

Victoria clutched the envelope tighter.

“You need to go home and rest.””

“Give it to me.””

“Naomi, don't make a scene.””

“Give me my father's letter!””

The shout startled the baby, who began crying.

Naomi immediately lowered her voice, rocking her daughter gently.

“It's okay, sweetheart. Mommy's here.””

The security guard moved between the women.

“Ma'am, let's all take a breath.””

The woman in the navy suit finally approached.

“There's no need for that,” she said calmly.

Victoria spun around.

“And who exactly are you?””

The woman opened her leather folder and removed a business card.

“My name is Rebecca Ellis. I'm here on behalf of the estate's legal representative.””

Daniel's face changed.

“What estate?””

Rebecca looked at him without blinking.

“Your wife's father's estate.””

Victoria's lips parted.

Then she said something so quietly that only Daniel and Rebecca appeared to hear it.

“No. That's impossible.””

Rebecca placed a document on the reception counter.

“Mrs. Bennett, we have reason to believe that you possess a letter belonging to our client. We'd like it returned immediately.””

Victoria tightened her grip on the envelope.

Daniel stared at his mother.

“What have you done?””

Victoria didn't answer.

Instead, she looked past Rebecca, directly at Naomi's newborn daughter.

And she whispered, “That child was never supposed to be born into this arrangement.””

Naomi stopped rocking.

Daniel went completely still.

Rebecca slowly closed her folder.

“Mrs. Bennett,” she said, “I strongly advise you not to say another word.””

But Victoria had already said enough.

Because Naomi suddenly understood that this wasn't merely about her marriage.

May you like

It was about why her father had left something behind.

And why her mother-in-law was terrified of a baby she had never wanted.
