Chapter 7: The Sister Who Carried the Truth

Nobody moved.

Victoria Cole stood in the doorway of the abandoned estate, surrounded by dust, broken memories, and twelve years of unanswered questions.

My first thought was that she didn’t look like a villain.

I hated that.

It would have been easier if she looked dangerous.

If she had cold eyes.

If she had a cruel smile.

But she didn’t.

She looked tired.

Like someone who had spent years carrying something too heavy.

Adrian stared at her.

I had never seen him look that lost.

“You’re alive.””

Victoria nodded.

“Yes.””

His voice dropped.

“Do you know what I went through?””

Her expression changed.

Pain crossed her face.

“Yes.””

“No.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“You don’t get to say yes.””

The anger he had been holding for years finally broke through.

“You disappeared. You let everyone think you were dead. You let me bury you.””

Victoria looked down.

“I know.””

“You let Daniel take the blame for everything.””

Her eyes lifted.

“And you think I wanted that?””

The room went silent.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Adrian said:

“Then explain.””

Victoria took a slow breath.

“I will.””

Her eyes moved to me.

“But Noah needs to hear the truth too.””

I tightened my grip on the compass.

“Why?””

“Because everything that happened started because of you.””

The words hit me like a punch.

Grandma immediately moved closer.

“Victoria.””

“No, Evelyn.””

Victoria’s voice was gentle.

“But he deserves to know.””

I looked at Adrian.

Then at Grandma.

Then back at Victoria.

“Tell me.””

Victoria nodded.

“Your father didn’t disappear because he was weak.””

She stepped farther into the room.

“Daniel disappeared because he found out someone was planning to take everything from him.””

“What everything?””

Victoria looked at me.

“His family.””

The old house suddenly felt smaller.

“Years ago, our family built a company empire. But behind the success, there were people making decisions that weren’t legal.””

Adrian nodded slightly.

“I know.””

“No,” Victoria said.

“You know part of it.””

She looked at him.

“Daniel discovered the truth about our father.””

Adrian froze.

“Our father?””

Victoria nodded.

“He wasn’t just hiding secrets from the world.””

She paused.

“He was hiding secrets from us.””

Grandma looked shocked.

“Your father?””

“Yes.””

I looked between them.

“Wait. You’re saying your own father was involved?””

Victoria nodded.

“He created the system Daniel was trying to destroy.””

Adrian stepped back.

“That’s impossible.””

Victoria’s face softened.

“You spent twelve years refusing to believe the truth because the truth hurt too much.””

That sentence silenced him.

Because it was true.

Sometimes the hardest thing to accept wasn’t that someone was evil.

It was that someone you loved could be.

I looked at Victoria.

“So why did my dad leave me?””

Her expression changed immediately.

“He didn’t.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“I know.””

She walked closer.

“Your father loved you.””

“Then why wasn’t he there?””

Victoria looked at the floor.

“Because someone threatened you.””

My chest tightened.

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she looked at Adrian.

“Show him.””

Adrian frowned.

“Show him what?””

“The file.””

For a moment, Adrian didn’t move.

Then he reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small folder.

I had never seen it before.

“What is that?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“Something Daniel gave me before he vanished.””

“You had this?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Adrian looked away.

“Because I was trying to understand it.””

My anger returned.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I grabbed the folder.

This time, nobody stopped me.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Names.

Dates.

And one picture that made me freeze.

It was my father.

Daniel.

Standing beside a woman.

My mother.

But I didn’t know her.

Not really.

I only knew her from the few memories Grandma had saved.

Her laugh.

Her voice.

The way she used to sing while cooking.

The picture showed them smiling.

Happy.

Normal.

Until I noticed something behind them.

A man.

Watching.

A black mark covered part of his face.

“Who is that?””

Victoria looked at the photograph.

“He was the reason your mother disappeared.””

I looked up.

“What happened to her?””

Victoria was quiet.

Then:

“She found out too much.””

The room became silent.

“She discovered what Daniel was investigating. She wanted to help him.””

“And?””

Victoria swallowed.

“She became a target.””

My fingers tightened around the picture.

“Is she alive?””

Nobody answered.

That was worse.

“Is she?””

Victoria looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

A thousand emotions hit me at once.

Anger.

Hope.

Fear.

My mother could be alive.

Or she could be gone.

Just like my father.

“I’m tired of losing people I never got to know.””

The words came out before I could stop them.

Grandma started crying.

Adrian looked down.

Victoria closed her eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“Why did my dad trust you if you were the person he was running from?””

Victoria looked surprised.

Then sad.

“Because I wasn’t the person he was running from.””

She reached into her pocket.

She pulled out something small.

Another compass.

But this one was different.

Older.

Damaged.

She placed it on the table.

“This belonged to Daniel.””

Adrian stared.

“That’s impossible.””

Victoria shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“He gave it to me the night he disappeared.””

“Why?””

Her fingers touched the metal.

“Because he knew I would be blamed.””

Adrian looked confused.

“You were.””

“Yes.””

“Why would he do that?””

Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because Daniel knew the person behind everything would try to make us destroy each other.””

The truth landed slowly.

Someone had spent years making them fight.

Making them distrust.

Making them look at the wrong person.

“Then who was it?””

Victoria looked toward the old hallway.

“I don’t know.””

Everyone went quiet.

Then a sound came from upstairs.

A floorboard.

Someone moving.

Adrian immediately turned.

“Stay here.””

Gabriel reached for him.

“Adrian.””

But Adrian was already walking toward the stairs.

I followed.

“Noah.””

I ignored him.

I was tired of staying behind.

The second floor was darker.

Dust floated through the air.

Old bedrooms lined the hallway.

Then we heard it.

A door closing.

Adrian stopped.

“Someone’s here.””

We moved slowly.

At the end of the hallway was Daniel’s old room.

The door was slightly open.

Adrian pushed it.

Inside, everything had been untouched.

Books.

A desk.

Old photographs.

A life frozen in time.

Then I noticed something.

A person standing near the window.

A man.

Adrian stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

The man turned.

And my heart stopped.

Because I recognized him.

Not from memory.

From the photographs.

The same face.

The same eyes.

The man standing beside my father.

The man my father had been investigating.

The stranger who had been hidden in every clue.

He smiled slightly.

“Hello, Noah.””

Adrian’s face changed.

“No.””

The man looked at him.

“Yes.””

Gabriel whispered:

“Impossible.””

The stranger walked forward.

“I know you all thought I was gone.””

Victoria stepped into the doorway.

Her voice shook.

“You.””

The man smiled.

“Victoria.””

Adrian looked between them.

“Who is he?””

Nobody answered.

Then Grandma, standing at the end of the hallway, whispered the name she had feared for years.

“Richard Cole.””

Adrian went completely still.

“That’s impossible.””

Richard smiled.

“No, Adrian.””

He looked at the compass around my neck.

“That’s the problem with your family.””

He stepped closer.

“You always believed the impossible couldn’t happen.””

My breathing became shallow.

Because I finally understood.

This wasn’t about someone who disappeared.

It was about someone who came back.

Richard looked directly at me.

“Your father spent years trying to protect you from me.””

He paused.

“And now he’s gone.””

A cold silence filled the room.

Then Richard said:

“But I’m here to finish what he started.””

And behind him, hidden inside Daniel’s old room, a computer screen suddenly turned on.

A message appeared.

One sentence.

May you like

Written by my father.

*If Richard is here, then Noah is already in danger.*
