Chapter 9: The Mission My Father Left Behind
I hated that everyone looked at me like they knew something I didn’t.
Again.
The same feeling I had carried my entire life.
Adults whispering.
Adults making decisions.
Adults saying, “You’ll understand someday.””
But someday had arrived.
And somehow, I still didn’t have the full truth.
I looked at Gabriel.
“The mission.””
My voice was quiet.
“What mission?””
Gabriel didn’t answer immediately.
He looked older than he had minutes before.
Like keeping this secret had taken years from him.
Adrian stepped closer.
“Gabriel.””
His voice was cold.
“You better start talking.””
Gabriel nodded slowly.
“You’re right.””
He looked around the old room.
“At this point, everyone deserves the truth.””
Victoria crossed her arms.
“Especially Noah.””
Gabriel looked at me.
“Your father discovered something that changed everything.””
“What?””
“He discovered that the company your family built wasn’t the real source of its power.””
I frowned.
“I don’t understand.””
“Money was never the important part.””
He walked toward the desk.
“The important part was information.””
Adrian watched him carefully.
“What kind of information?””
Gabriel opened the old computer.
A hidden folder appeared.
Files.
Documents.
Names.
Hundreds of them.
“This.””
He pointed at the screen.
“Your father called it the Compass Project.””
The words made my skin feel cold.
“The compass?””
Gabriel nodded.
“Your great-grandfather created a system for protecting important information. Not money. Not business secrets.””
He looked at me.
“Truth.””
I touched the pendant.
“So my necklace…”
“Was the access key.””
I stared at it.
All my life, I thought it was just something my dad left behind.
Something to remember him by.
I never imagined it was connected to something bigger.
“Why me?””
Gabriel’s expression softened.
“Because Daniel trusted you.””
“I was three.””
“Yes.””
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does if you knew your father.””
Gabriel smiled sadly.
“He believed children noticed things adults ignored.””
I remembered something.
A memory.
A small one.
My father sitting beside my bed.
Holding this exact compass.
“You’re going to keep this safe for me, Noah.””
I had laughed.
Because I was too young to understand.
“Why me?””
My father had smiled.
“Because you’re the only person I trust completely.””
I had forgotten that.
Until now.
My chest tightened.
“He knew?””
Gabriel nodded.
“Daniel knew someone would eventually come after the information. He didn’t know who he could trust.””
His eyes moved around the room.
“So he created a plan.””
“The mission?””
“Yes.””
I looked at the computer.
“What do I have to do?””
Nobody answered.
That worried me.
Finally, Gabriel said:
“Find the original Compass Archive.””
“Where is it?””
“We don’t know.””
“Then how am I supposed to find it?””
Gabriel looked at my necklace.
“Because Daniel left clues.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“Why didn’t you tell me this?””
Gabriel looked at him.
“Because Daniel made me promise.””
Adrian’s face hardened.
“Another promise.””
“Yes.””
Gabriel’s voice became heavy.
“But this one saved your life.””
The room became quiet.
“What do you mean?””
Gabriel looked at Adrian.
“Richard wasn’t the only person looking for the archive.””
Victoria’s expression changed.
“Who else?””
Gabriel hesitated.
Then:
“Someone inside the company.””
Adrian frowned.
“Who?””
Gabriel looked at the screen.
A list appeared.
Names.
Executives.
Partners.
People connected to the Cole empire.
Then one name appeared at the top.
Adrian stared.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“Who?””
He didn’t answer.
Victoria read it.
And her face changed.
“Mother.””
The word was barely a whisper.
Adrian stepped back.
“That’s impossible.””
Gabriel shook his head.
“Daniel suspected it.””
“Our mother died years ago.””
“Yes.””
“Then how?””
Gabriel looked at the files.
“Because someone has been using her identity.””
My head spun.
Dead people.
Missing people.
Fake deaths.
Hidden identities.
It felt like everyone connected to my family had disappeared at least once.
“Who is behind all this?””
Gabriel closed the folder.
“That’s what Daniel wanted you to discover.””
I stared.
“You mean he didn’t know?””
“He knew pieces.””
“What pieces?””
Gabriel looked at me.
“He knew the person responsible was someone close.””
The same words.
Again.
Someone close.
I looked around the room.
At Adrian.
Victoria.
Grandma.
Gabriel.
Everyone had secrets.
Everyone had reasons.
But one person had always been there.
One person who knew my father.
One person who protected Grandma.
One person who brought me the letter.
Gabriel.
My eyes narrowed.
“Why did my father trust you?””
The question surprised everyone.
Gabriel looked at me.
“Because I loved your father like a brother.””
“But you were there the night he disappeared.””
Silence.
Adrian looked at Gabriel.
“What happened that night?””
Gabriel closed his eyes.
“I failed him.””
The words were painful.
“What happened?””
Gabriel looked at the floor.
“Daniel called me.””
“When?””
“The night he disappeared.””
“And?””
“He told me to take Noah and Evelyn somewhere safe.””
My breath caught.
“What?””
Gabriel nodded.
“Daniel knew someone was coming.””
Grandma whispered:
“You never told me.””
“I tried.””
“No.””
Her voice shook.
“You disappeared too.””
Gabriel looked ashamed.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“By leaving us?””
The pain in her voice was clear.
Gabriel lowered his head.
“I thought if they believed I was gone, they would stop searching.””
“Did they?””
“No.””
A silence followed.
Then I asked:
“Where did my father go?””
Gabriel looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
“But you saw him.””
“Yes.””
“Alive?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
Gabriel swallowed.
“The last time I saw Daniel, he was injured.””
My heart dropped.
“What happened?””
“He gave me the compass.””
“Mine?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he knew they would come for him.””
Gabriel looked at the pendant.
“And he knew they would come for you eventually.””
I held it tightly.
“So he planned all this?””
“Yes.””
“Even disappearing?””
Gabriel looked away.
“He thought it was the only way.””
That hurt.
Because even if my father did it to protect me…
I still lost him.
I still grew up without him.
A loud sound suddenly came from outside.
Everyone froze.
A car door slammed.
Adrian immediately moved toward the window.
“There’s someone outside.””
We followed.
A black SUV sat near the estate gates.
No headlights.
No movement.
Then a person stepped out.
A woman.
Older.
Wearing a dark coat.
Victoria went completely still.
“No.””
Adrian looked at her.
“What?””
Victoria whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
The woman walked closer.
Slowly.
Calmly.
Like she knew everyone inside was watching.
Then the security camera zoomed in.
The woman looked directly into the lens.
And smiled.
Grandma started shaking.
Because she knew her.
Adrian whispered:
“Mother?””
Nobody spoke.
The woman raised a hand.
Holding a silver compass.
Then she mouthed something through the camera.
I couldn’t hear her.
But Adrian could.
His face changed.
“What did she say?”” I asked.
He looked at me.
Terrified.
“She said…”
He swallowed.
“She said Daniel failed.””
A pause.
Then:
“And now Noah has to finish what he started.””
The front doors of the estate suddenly unlocked.
By themselves.
A message appeared on the computer screen.
A message from my father.
The final clue.
*The last compass is not hidden.*
*It is carried by the person who betrayed us.*
Everyone looked at the woman outside.
And I realized something.
May you like
The truth we had been chasing for years wasn’t hidden in the past.
It had been standing at the door the entire time.
