Chapter 3: The Name They Buried

The first thing I did after learning the truth was drive to the place where my old life was supposed to begin.

The Carter estate sat on twenty acres of land behind iron gates and tall oak trees. For six years, I had driven through those gates believing I was coming home.

Now, it felt like I was entering a crime scene.

Every brick in that house looked different.

Every hallway carried a memory that didn’t belong to me.

I used to walk through those rooms as Ryan Carter, the successful son of Leonard Carter, a man who built his fortune through real estate, private investments, and connections that reached farther than most people knew.

People respected him.

People feared him.

I had spent years thinking that was strength.

Now I understood something.

Fear and respect were not the same thing.

Leonard was waiting for me in his office.

Of course he was.

He sat behind his massive wooden desk like he had been expecting this moment. His silver hair was perfectly combed. His suit was flawless. He looked exactly like the man people admired at charity events and business dinners.

He looked like a good man.

That was the most dangerous thing about him.

“Where have you been?”” he asked.

No panic.

No surprise.

Just control.

I stepped inside and closed the door.

“I found the room.””

For the first time, something changed in his face.

Barely.

A tiny movement around his eyes.

But I saw it.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””

I almost laughed.

Even now.

Even after everything.

He was still lying.

“Don’t do that.””

“Do what?””

“Pretend.””

Leonard leaned back.

“You’ve been confused before. The accident affected your memory. You’re vulnerable to people manipulating you.””

“My daughter isn’t manipulation.””

His jaw tightened.

There it was.

The reaction.

The crack in the mask.

“Nora should not have been involved in this.””

My hands curled into fists.

“You know her name.””

Silence.

A long, heavy silence.

Then Leonard sighed.

“You always were more emotional than Ryan.””

The words hit me.

Not because they hurt.

Because they confirmed everything.

“Say that again.””

Leonard looked at me.

And for a second, I saw the man underneath.

Not a father.

Not a protector.

A strategist.

A man calculating his next move.

“You were never supposed to know.””

My breathing slowed.

“You admit it?””

He stood.

“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.””

“I know exactly what I’m dealing with.””

“No,” he said sharply.

“You don’t.””

His voice filled the room.

“You think this is some simple family argument? You think you can walk in here after six years and accuse me because some woman and a frightened child told you a story?””

“Evelyn is my mother.””

His expression changed.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

“You found her.””

I stared at him.

“You knew she was alive.””

Leonard looked away.

“That woman destroyed everything.””

“My mother?””

“She was never supposed to interfere.””

My stomach turned.

“What did you do to her?””

He didn’t answer.

That scared me more than a confession.

“Where is Ryan?””

The room went quiet.

Leonard walked toward the window.

“You don’t understand what happened that night.””

“Then explain it.””

“You were both supposed to be gone.””

My blood ran cold.

“Both?””

He looked at me.

“Ryan and you.””

I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.

“You tried to kill us?””

“No.””

His answer came too quickly.

“You arranged it.””

“I arranged nothing.””

“Then why was I found alone?””

He stared at me.

Because somewhere inside that silence was the answer.

I had spent six years believing my memory disappeared because of an accident.

Now I wondered if someone had taken it.

“I gave you a chance,” Leonard said.

“A chance?””

“To become something better.””

I shook my head.

“You stole my life.””

“No,” he snapped.

“I saved it.””

“You stole my name.””

“You had no future.””

The words hung there.

Cruel.

Cold.

“You were Daniel Reed. The son of a woman who refused to understand her place. Ryan was the Carter heir.

He had discipline. He had ambition.””

“And I didn’t?””

“You cared too much.””

I stared at him.

For years, I thought my father wanted me to succeed.

Now I realized he wanted me to disappear.

“You hated me because I wasn’t Ryan.””

Leonard didn’t respond.

He didn’t need to.

The truth was already sitting between us.

I walked closer.

“Where is he?””

“Leave this alone.””

“No.””

“Daniel.””

The sound of my real name coming from him felt like a confession.

“You have a family now. A wife. A daughter. Why destroy everything?””

I looked him directly in the eyes.

“You already did.””

I left before he could say anything else.

But I carried one thing with me.

Fear.

Not for myself.

For everyone Leonard Carter had touched.

Because a man like him didn’t surrender when exposed.

May you like

A man like him fought.

And I knew exactly who he would target next.
