Chapter 6: The Truth Beneath the Foundation

Leonard disappeared before police could question him.

That was the first sign he knew the walls were closing in.

His attorneys released a statement claiming he was suffering from health complications and needed privacy.

Nobody believed it.

Not anymore.

The same newspapers that once called him a visionary businessman were now calling him something else.

A fraud.

A manipulator.

A man who built an empire on stolen lives.

But I knew Leonard.

He wasn’t hiding because he was scared.

He was planning.

Three days later, I received an envelope.

No return address.

No name.

Just a single sentence written across the front.

You want the truth? Come alone.

Claire begged me not to go.

Ryan told me it was a trap.

Detective Bell told me he would have officers nearby.

But something inside me needed answers.

Because for six years, I had lived someone else’s life.

I needed to know why.

The location was an old Carter property outside the city.

A place I had never seen before.

When I arrived, Leonard was standing beside the abandoned building.

Older.

Tired.

But still arrogant.

“You came.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

“Because you’re a Reed.””

I almost walked away.

But I stopped.

“What does that mean?””

“It means you were always going to come looking.””

The wind moved through the empty building.

“I want the truth.””

Leonard smiled sadly.

“You think truth fixes things.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“But lies destroy them.””

For once, Leonard looked tired.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just tired.

“Your mother was stubborn.””

My jaw tightened.

“Maria?””

He nodded.

“She refused to understand what I was building.””

“What you were building?””

“My legacy.””

There it was.

The word powerful men always used when they wanted to excuse cruelty.

Legacy.

“You destroyed people for a legacy?””

“She was going to take you away.””

“You mean she wanted to protect me.””

Leonard looked at me.

“She wanted to keep you from becoming something.””

“Something like you?””

He didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

“My mother disappeared because of you.””

His face hardened.

“You don’t know what happened.””

“Then tell me.””

Silence.

Finally, he said:

“Maria died because she made choices.””

My fists tightened.

“You’re lying.””

“Everyone lies, Daniel.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone survives. You’re the only one who destroys.””

For a moment, something like regret crossed his face.

Then it vanished.

“I gave you a better life.””

“You gave me a fake one.””

“You had money.””

“I had no identity.””

“You had a family.””

“I had a family built on your lies.””

Leonard looked toward the road.

“You think Ryan would have done better?””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“You and Ryan were always different.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Explain.””

“Ryan had my ambition.””

“And me?””

“You had your mother’s heart.””

The words almost sounded like an insult.

But I knew better.

Coming from Leonard, it was probably the closest thing to admiration he could offer.

A siren sounded in the distance.

Leonard looked toward the road.

His face changed.

He knew.

The police were coming.

“You should know one more thing.””

I didn’t move.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“Ryan wasn’t the only person I hid.””

My heart stopped.

“What are you talking about?””

But before he answered, officers surrounded the property.

Leonard was taken into custody.

And as they led him away, he looked back at me.

Not with anger.

Not with fear.

With a warning.

That night, Detective Bell called.

“We found another room.””

I sat up.

“Where?””

“Under the old Carter estate.””

My blood ran cold.

“What was inside?””

A pause.

Then Marcus spoke.

“Records.””

“What kind of records?””

“Every person Leonard Carter ever erased.””

I closed my eyes.

Because I knew then.

The story wasn’t just about me.

It wasn’t just about Ryan.

Leonard Carter hadn’t stolen one life.

May you like

He had stolen many.

And now we were about to uncover every single one.
