Chapter 8: The Mother Who Never Left
Nobody believed him.
Not at first.
Because some truths are too large to enter your mind immediately.
They hit the door.
They shake it.
But they don’t come inside until you’re ready.
My father was the first to speak.
“No.””
His voice was almost a whisper.
“No, that’s impossible.””
Nathan Hayes looked at him.
“I know what you were told.””
“My wife died.””
“I know.””
“I buried her.””
Hayes stayed silent.
That silence made my father angry.
“You don’t get to stand in front of me and say she’s alive.””
“I’m not asking you to believe me.””
“Then why are you here?””
Hayes looked at me.
“Because she wanted her daughter protected.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“My mother.””
“Yes.””
“Where is she?””
Nobody answered.
That was when I knew.
There was more.
“There’s a reason nobody wants to tell me.””
Hayes looked at Evelyn.
She looked terrified.
“Evelyn knows.””
My eyes moved toward her.
“Knows what?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
I stepped forward.
“Tell me.””
“Nia…”
“Tell me!””
The sound of my own voice surprised me.
I had spent years being patient.
Following rules.
Trusting people above me.
But this was different.
This was my family.
My life.
My stolen years.
Evelyn looked at my father.
“I was trying to keep you alive.””
Robert stared.
“By destroying our daughter?””
Her face crumpled.
“I was trying to stop them.””
“Who?””
She looked at Hayes.
Nobody moved.
Then she whispered:
“The people who killed your mother.””
The words changed everything.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Officer Marcus looked toward the street.
And I realized this was no longer just a family secret.
This was something dangerous.
Something that had followed me home.
I looked at Hayes.
“You knew she was alive.””
“Yes.””
“You let me believe she was dead.””
His jaw tightened.
“I was following orders.””
I stared at him.
“Whose orders?””
He didn’t answer.
That was becoming a pattern.
Everyone knew pieces.
Nobody wanted to hand me the whole truth.
I walked toward him.
“Everyone keeps saying they were protecting me.””
My voice became colder.
“But nobody protected me from losing my entire family.””
Hayes looked away.
For the first time, he looked guilty.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
I pointed toward the house.
“You weren’t the one who woke up every day wondering why your father forgot you existed.””
My father looked down.
The pain on his face was unbearable.
“I never forgot you.””
I turned.
“I know.””
And that was the worst part.
Because I believed him.
He had been lied to too.
The person who destroyed my family wasn’t just someone outside.
They had gotten inside.
Hayes reached into his jacket.
My body immediately tensed.
Officer Marcus moved.
But Hayes pulled out a photograph.
He handed it to me.
“This is from six months ago.””
I looked down.
My breath stopped.
A woman stood beside a window.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakable.
My mother.
Alive.
I touched the picture.
My fingers shook.
“That’s her.””
Hayes nodded.
“Yes.””
My father stepped beside me.
When he saw it, he made a sound I had never heard before.
A broken sound.
Like grief and hope fighting inside him.
“My God.””
He touched the photograph.
“She’s alive.””
Nobody corrected him.
Because she was.
The woman he had mourned.
The woman he buried.
The woman he lost.
Was somewhere in the world.
Then I noticed something.
On the back of the photo was handwriting.
My mother’s handwriting.
I turned it over.
Only one sentence.
Do not trust Nathan Hayes.
My blood went cold.
Slowly, I looked up.
Hayes saw the message.
And his face changed.
Not fear.
Recognition.
He knew she had written it.
“You lied.””
The words came quietly.
Hayes looked at me.
“Nia.””
“You said she trusted you.””
“She did.””
“Then why did she warn me not to trust you?””
Nobody spoke.
Evelyn stepped backward.
Like she wanted distance from everyone.
Like she knew something was coming.
Hayes looked toward the photograph.
Then toward the house.
“She wrote that before she knew the full truth.””
“What truth?””
He didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“What truth?””
His eyes met mine.
Then he said:
“The truth about who your mother was hiding from.””
A sound came from behind us.
A phone vibrating.
Everyone looked.
It wasn’t Evelyn’s.
It wasn’t mine.
It was Robert’s.
He pulled it out.
Unknown number.
His hand shook.
“Answer it,” I said.
He did.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice came through.
A voice none of us expected.
My father’s face changed.
Because he recognized it.
He dropped the phone slightly.
“Nora?””
My heart stopped.
Nora.
My mother’s name.
Then the voice spoke.
“Robert…”
My father covered his mouth.
The woman continued:
“I’m sorry it took so long.””
Tears filled his eyes.
“Where are you?””
A pause.
Then:
“I can’t tell you.””
“Why?””
Another pause.
Then my mother whispered:
“Because they’re listening.””
Everyone looked around.
May you like
And then she said the one thing that made my entire body freeze.
“Nia is standing next to the person who betrayed us.””
