Chapter 9: The Woman In The Phone
The phone slipped from my father’s hand.
Officer Marcus caught it before it hit the floor.
But nobody cared.
Nobody looked at the phone.
Everyone looked at each other.
Because my mother’s voice had just entered the room.
After all these years.
After every unanswered question.
After every lie.
She was there.
Alive.
Somewhere.
And she had just warned me.
Someone standing beside me had betrayed us.
My eyes moved slowly.
Robert.
Daniel.
Officer Marcus.
Evelyn.
Nathan Hayes.
Everyone became a possibility.
Everyone became a question.
My father reached for the phone.
“Nora?””
The voice returned.
“Robert.””
He closed his eyes.
A tear moved down his face.
“I thought I lost you.””
“I know.””
“Why didn’t you come home?””
Silence.
Then my mother answered:
“Because coming home would have gotten you killed.””
My father looked broken.
“I don’t understand.””
“You weren’t supposed to.””
I grabbed the phone.
“Mom?””
The line went silent.
Then:
“Nia?””
My knees almost gave out.
Hearing my name from her mouth felt impossible.
I had imagined this moment thousands of times.
But never like this.
“Mom.””
My voice cracked.
“I thought you were dead.””
“I know.””
“Why?””
A long silence.
Then she said:
“Because I needed everyone to believe that.””
I froze.
“What?””
“I’m sorry.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“No.””
I looked around the room.
“No more apologies.””
My voice shook.
“I need answers.””
“You deserve them.””
“Then give them to me.””
My mother breathed quietly.
“I discovered something during my final assignment.””
“The investigation?””
“Yes.””
“Was it about money?””
“Partly.””
“What else?””
Silence.
Then:
“People.””
The word chilled me.
“What people?””
“People with power.””
My eyes moved toward Hayes.
He looked away.
My mother continued.
“They weren’t afraid of losing money.””
“What were they afraid of?””
She answered:
“The truth coming out.””
I looked at the envelopes.
The documents.
The secrets.
“Why was I declared dead?””
My mother’s voice softened.
“Because they thought you were the last piece of evidence.””
The room went silent.
I felt my heartbeat in my ears.
“Evidence of what?””
Before she answered, the line crackled.
Then another voice came through.
A man.
Not Hayes.
Someone else.
“End the call.””
My mother gasped.
Everyone reacted.
Hayes stepped forward.
“Who is that?””
The man spoke again.
“You should have stayed buried, Nia.””
The call disconnected.
My father stared at the phone.
“What was that?””
Nobody answered.
Then Officer Marcus looked outside.
His expression changed.
“Everyone inside.””
We all turned.
Another vehicle had stopped near the curb.
Then another.
Two black SUVs.
No markings.
No explanation.
Just people arriving.
Daniel moved toward the window.
“They found us.””
My father looked at him.
“Who?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Because the answer was already walking toward the house.
Three men in dark clothing stepped out.
Not police.
Not military.
Just men who moved like they had authority.
Hayes immediately looked nervous.
That surprised me.
Because until now, he had been the one controlling the room.
“Hayes.””
One of the men called his name.
His face changed.
The man on the porch smiled.
“You were supposed to handle this.””
Hayes said nothing.
The man looked through the window.
And saw me.
His expression changed.
“Well.””
He smiled.
“She really did come back.””
My father stepped in front of me.
“You need to leave.””
The man laughed softly.
“Robert Carter.””
He knew my father’s name.
“I’m glad we finally meet.””
Officer Marcus moved beside us.
“You’re trespassing.””
The man ignored him.
His eyes stayed on me.
“Nia.””
I felt a chill.
“You have no idea how much trouble you’ve caused.””
I stared back.
“You have no idea how much you’ve taken from me.””
The man smiled.
“Your mother said you would be difficult.””
My breath caught.
“You know my mother?””
“Yes.””
“Where is she?””
The smile disappeared.
“That depends.””
“On what?””
He looked at the envelope in my hand.
“On whether you still have the file.””
Nobody moved.
Then Evelyn suddenly spoke.
“Give it to them.””
Everyone turned.
My father looked at her.
“Evelyn?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I’m sorry.””
I stared.
After everything.
After all the lies.
She was still choosing them.
Or was she?
The man outside smiled.
“Good girl.””
Evelyn flinched.
And I noticed something.
She wasn’t looking at me.
She was looking at him.
Like she was afraid.
Not loyal.
Afraid.
I stepped closer.
“Evelyn.””
She looked at me.
For one second, the mask fell.
And I saw the truth.
She wasn’t the person controlling this.
She was trapped too.
Then she whispered something only I could hear.
“Don’t give them the file.””
My eyes widened.
Because her mouth had said one thing.
But her eyes said another.
Run.
And before anyone could react, Evelyn grabbed the envelope from the table.
The entire room froze.
The man outside smiled.
“Finally.””
But Evelyn didn’t hand it over.
She turned toward me.
And tore open the hidden final page.
The page everyone was afraid of.
The page that could reveal everything.
Her voice shook.
“Nia…”
She looked at the document.
Then at me.
May you like
And whispered:
“You need to see what your mother was protecting you from.””
