Chapter 4: The Account She Never Told Me About

Vanessa had always been good at knowing when to cry.

I learned that the moment she realized her own words had betrayed her.

Her eyes filled. Her lower lip trembled. She glanced at the rain-soaked porch, then at my mother, as if she expected the two of us to forget everything the second she looked hurt enough.

“Marcus, please,” she whispered.

“I didn't mean it that way.””

I stood in the doorway with my phone in one hand and Gloria's phone in the other.

“What other account, Vanessa?””

She reached for my wrist.

“Can we please talk inside? Just you and me?””

“No. You can talk right here.””

Her gaze flicked toward Andre.

He was still standing in the entryway, wearing the same button shirt I'd seen through the window. He had stopped pretending to look confused. His face had gone tight, and he kept rubbing his palms against his trousers.

Vanessa noticed me watching him.

“Andre has nothing to do with this.””

“Then he won't mind explaining why he's here.””

Andre cleared his throat.

“I came over because Vanessa needed someone to talk to.””

I stared at him.

“That's why you were holding my wife around the waist?””

He looked down.

“It wasn't supposed to happen like this.””

“Like what?””

He said nothing.

Vanessa stepped between us.

“Marcus, you're turning this into something it's not. Andre and I have been close because I was lonely. You were gone for months.””

“I was gone serving my country, not abandoning my family.””

“I know that!””

“Do you?””

My voice remained low, but the question seemed to frighten her more than shouting would have.

She folded her arms across her cream dress.

“I had bills to pay. I had a house to maintain. I had your mother questioning every decision I made. You have no idea what I dealt with.””

Gloria lifted her chin.

“I asked why money was disappearing from the household account.””

Vanessa whipped around.

“You had no right to question my finances!””

“Those were Marcus's finances.””

“They were OUR finances!””

I raised my hand.

“Enough. Tell me about the other account.””

Vanessa pressed her fingertips against her forehead.

“It was a savings account. I opened it because I wanted us to have something separate from the household bills.””

“Whose name is on it?””

“Mine.””

The answer came too quickly.

I opened my banking app again and examined the transaction notification. The bank had flagged activity that required verification, but the message didn't explain the purpose of the transfer.

“Did money from my account go into yours?””

Vanessa stared at me.

“Marcus, you don't understand how banking works when you're managing a household.””

“Then explain it.””

She looked toward the living room.

“I can't do this while everyone is standing here.””

“You managed to make financial decisions while I was away. You can explain them while I'm standing here.””

Andre shifted toward the hallway.

I turned my head.

“Stay where you are.””

He stopped.

For the first time, he seemed to understand that I wasn't going to let either of them control the conversation by moving around my house.

Vanessa's voice became softer.

“I was protecting our future.””

“From what?””

“From uncertainty. From your deployments. From the possibility that something might happen to you.””

I stared at her.

“You opened an account because you were afraid I might not come home?””

She swallowed.

“Yes.””

“And you never mentioned it?””

“I didn't want to upset you.””

“Yet you had time to arrange meetings with Andre.””

Her eyes flashed.

“Don't bring him into this!””

I almost laughed at the absurdity.

“You're standing in front of me with another man in my house, and you're telling me not to bring him into this?””

Andre finally spoke.

“Marcus, I made a mistake.””

I turned toward him.

“You don't get to call it a mistake and walk away.””

He rubbed his face.

“I care about Vanessa.””

“Then you should have cared enough not to help her deceive me.””

He looked at her.

She looked away.

That silence told me more than either of them could have said.

Gloria suddenly coughed behind me. I turned and saw her shivering, her cardigan dripping onto the porch boards.

The anger inside me had been building so quickly that I'd forgotten she was still soaked from the rain.

I stepped aside.

“Mom, come inside.””

Vanessa moved immediately.

“Wait. She can't just come in and start accusing me of things.””

I stared at my wife.

“You put her outside.””

“She was causing problems.””

“She is my mother.””

“And I'm your wife!””

The words echoed through the entryway.

I looked at Vanessa for a long moment.

“Then act like someone who wants to build a family with me.””

Her mouth opened, but nothing came out.

I helped Gloria across the threshold. She moved slowly, carrying her small suitcase herself until I took it from her.

The familiar smell of our home surrounded us: lemon cleaner, fresh laundry, and the coffee Vanessa used to make on Sunday mornings.

It should have felt comforting.

Instead, every ordinary detail looked like evidence of a life I'd misunderstood.

The sofa where Andre had been sitting still held a cushion pushed out of place. Two wineglasses rested on the coffee table. A man's jacket hung over the back of a dining chair.

Gloria stopped near the hallway.

“I don't want to cause more trouble,” she whispered.

“You didn't cause this.””

Vanessa followed us inside and closed the door. She stood beside the console table, gripping its edge.

“Marcus, I need you to understand something.””

I placed the suitcase beside the stairs.

“I'm listening.””

“The account wasn't the only thing I was trying to protect.””

“What else?””

She glanced toward Andre.

He shook his head almost imperceptibly.

I saw it.

So did Vanessa.

For a moment, their secret passed between them without a single word.

Then Vanessa took a breath.

“There was paperwork.””

“What paperwork?””

“Something you signed before you left.””

I frowned.

“I signed dozens of documents.””

“This one was about the house.””

My attention sharpened.

“What about the house?””

She looked at the floor.

“I thought you knew.””

“Knew what?””

Her fingers tightened around the edge of the table.

May you like

Then she lifted her eyes to mine.

“Marcus, your house isn't entirely yours anymore.””
