Chapter 5: The Signature on the Paper
I didn't raise my voice.
I didn't throw anything.
I simply stared at Vanessa until she began shifting her weight from one foot to the other.
“What did you say?””
She walked toward the living-room coffee table and picked up a folder that had been partly hidden beneath a stack of magazines.
“I didn't want you finding out this way.””
She placed the folder on the table.
Gloria remained beside the staircase, one hand resting on the railing. Her wet shoes had left small marks on the hardwood floor. She looked exhausted, but when Vanessa opened the folder, she moved closer.
“What is that?”” my mother asked.
Vanessa ignored her.
“Marcus, before you left, you signed some financial documents. You remember? You said you trusted me to handle the paperwork while you were away.””
I remembered signing documents at the kitchen counter several days before deployment. There had been insurance forms, banking authorizations, and routine paperwork related to the household.
Vanessa had organized everything in labeled folders.
I'd thanked her for being so prepared.
I looked at the folder now.
“Show me.””
She hesitated.
“Promise me you'll let me explain before you make any decisions.””
“Show me the document.””
With shaking fingers, she removed several pages and laid them on the table.
The first was a copy of an authorization form. The second appeared to relate to a financial account. The third contained information about the property.
I picked it up.
The address was correct.
My name appeared near the top.
Farther down, a paragraph described an arrangement involving a property-related financial interest. I read it twice, trying to understand exactly what it meant.
“This doesn't look like the paperwork I remember.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You were tired. You were rushing to finish everything before leaving.””
“I know what I signed.””
“You signed it.””
“I signed a stack of documents you gave me. That doesn't mean I understood every page.””
Her eyes filled again.
“Are you accusing me of forging your signature?””
“I'm asking why this document is here.””
Andre moved away from the hallway and approached the table.
“Marcus, maybe you should have a lawyer look at it.””
I turned toward him.
“That's the first sensible thing you've said.””
He flinched.
Vanessa snatched the document from the table.
“You don't need a lawyer. This is a family matter.””
I extended my hand.
“Put it back.””
She stared at me.
“Why are you treating me like a criminal?””
“Because you've lied to me about my mother, you've admitted there is an account you kept secret, and now you're showing me paperwork I don't remember signing.””
“I was trying to help us!””
“Then why hide it?””
She slapped the document onto the table.
“Because you never listen unless something terrible happens!””
Gloria took a step forward.
“Vanessa, stop blaming him for your choices.””
Vanessa rounded on her.
“This is your fault!””
My mother went still.
“You've been poisoning him against me since he came home. You found those messages, and now you've twisted everything.””
Gloria's voice trembled, but she didn't lower her eyes.
“I sat outside in the rain because you threw me out. I didn't make you do that.””
Vanessa grabbed the edge of the folder and swept several loose pages back into it.
“I'm finished being attacked in my own home.””
I stepped between her and my mother.
“This is my home too.””
“And I live here!””
“You do. That doesn't give you the right to deceive everyone in it.””
Her face reddened.
For a moment, she looked as if she might throw the folder at me. Instead, she hugged it against her chest.
“You want to know what I did?”” she demanded.
“I made decisions because someone had to. You were never here. Every time something went wrong, I was the one left to fix it.””
I watched her carefully.
“Did you transfer money from my account?””
She looked away.
“Did you use my signature to authorize something I never agreed to?””
“I did what I thought was necessary.””
“That isn't an answer.””
“It's the only one you're getting right now!””
The words burst out of her.
Andre stepped back.
Vanessa immediately pressed her lips together, as if she wished she could pull the sentence out of the air.
I reached for the folder.
She held on.
“Let go,” I said.
“No.””
“Vanessa.””
“You're not taking these documents.””
I didn't pull harder. I simply waited.
Her hands began to tremble.
Finally, she released the folder.
I closed it and placed it on the table.
“I'm keeping copies of everything. I'll contact the bank and an attorney. Nobody is signing anything else until this is explained.””
Vanessa stared at me in disbelief.
“You'd bring strangers into our marriage?””
“You brought money and property into it without telling me.””
“That's not fair.””
“Neither is making my mother believe she's been abandoned by her own son.””
Gloria covered her mouth.
I looked at her.
“Mom, you don't need to explain yourself anymore.””
She nodded, though tears had begun gathering in her eyes again.
Vanessa walked toward the window. Outside, rain streaked the glass, blurring the bright green lawn.
“I never wanted it to happen like this,” she said quietly.
I almost believed her.
Then she turned around.
“Marcus, you need to understand that the money wasn't just sitting there. It was connected to something bigger.””
“What does that mean?””
She glanced at Andre.
He shook his head again.
This time, she ignored him.
“I made a promise.””
“To whom?””
She swallowed.
“To someone who helped us.””
“Who?””
Her eyes moved toward the front door, as though she were searching for an escape.
“I can't tell you that yet.””
I felt my patience thinning.
“You've had every opportunity to tell me the truth.””
“Because you won't understand!””
“Then explain it.””
She looked at me, breathing rapidly.
“The transfer wasn't supposed to be permanent. I thought I could move the money, settle the arrangement, and put everything back before you came home.””
I stared at her.
“Put everything back?””
She nodded once.
“So you did move the money.””
Vanessa's face crumpled.
“I didn't think you'd find out this way.””
I looked at the folder again.
“What arrangement?””
She opened her mouth, but Andre suddenly spoke from behind her.
“Tell him about the deadline.””
Vanessa spun around.
“Shut up!””
Andre held up both hands.
“No. I'm done covering for you.””
The room fell silent.
Vanessa looked at him with naked fury.
“You said you'd never tell him.””
“I said I wouldn't tell him unless you dragged me into this.””
“You owe me!””
Andre's face hardened.
“I owe you nothing.””
He turned toward me.
“Marcus, there's something you need to know about the person Vanessa promised to pay.””
Before he could continue, Vanessa lunged for the folder on the table and pulled out a single sheet.
She held it against her chest.
“Don't listen to him,” she said.
“He doesn't know everything.””
I looked at the page in her hand.
A name was printed near the bottom beside a signature.
It wasn't mine.
It wasn't Vanessa's.
And the moment Gloria saw it, she gripped the staircase railing so tightly that her knuckles turned white.
“Where did you get that name?”” she whispered.
Vanessa's expression changed.
For the first time since I'd arrived, she looked genuinely frightened.
May you like
Because my mother recognized the person who had helped her arrange the secret.
And apparently, that person had a connection to our family that neither Vanessa nor I had ever discussed.
