Chapter 7: The Signature After Death

The paper shook between my fingers.

I stared at the signature.

Again.

And again.

Trying to force my brain to understand something that made no sense.

Daniel’s name.

Written clearly at the bottom of the document.

A date beside it.

Three days after the accident that supposedly killed him.

My eyes moved up to Mark.

“You knew.””

His face was full of regret.

“I knew something.””

The answer made my stomach twist.

“Something?””

I held up the paper.

“This is not something.””

My voice echoed through the empty wedding hall.

“This is my entire life.””

Mark nodded slowly.

“You’re right.””

“Then explain it.””

He looked at Elena.

She looked away.

That scared me more than anything.

Because my mother had walked into the room after twenty-two years with answers.

But now she looked like she was afraid of the truth too.

“Please,” I whispered.

Mark sat down.

And for the first time, he looked like a man who had been carrying a secret too heavy for his own shoulders.

“The night Daniel died wasn’t the night everyone thinks it was.””

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

“It means the accident happened.””

He paused.

“But Daniel didn’t die immediately.””

My breath caught.

I looked at Elena.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You knew?””

She nodded.

“I knew he survived the accident.””

The words were barely audible.

I stepped back.

“No.””

“Ava—”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“You all knew he was alive?””

Mark shook his head.

“Not for long.””

“Then what happened?””

He looked at the document.

“Daniel was taken to a private hospital.””

“Why?””

“Because Richard was involved.””

The room went cold.

I looked toward the door.

Almost expecting Richard to appear again.

“He was there?””

Mark nodded.

“He arrived before the ambulance.””

Elena covered her face.

“I didn’t understand what was happening.””

My eyes moved between them.

“Tell me.””

Elena wiped her tears.

“Daniel was unconscious. The doctors said he might recover.””

“Then?””

She looked down.

“Richard showed up.””

My hands tightened.

“Why?””

“Because he knew Daniel was your father.””

Silence.

“And?””

Elena’s voice became smaller.

“He offered to pay for everything.””

I frowned.

“That sounds like a good thing.””

“It wasn’t.””

Mark’s jaw tightened.

“He wasn’t helping.””

“Then what was he doing?””

Mark looked at me.

“Creating control.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t understand.””

“He paid the hospital bills. He arranged lawyers. He made himself look like the only person willing to save everyone.””

“But why?””

Mark looked at the document.

“Because he wanted Daniel’s rights.””

My heart stopped.

“Rights?””

“Daniel had filed paperwork before the accident.””

Elena nodded.

“He wanted to officially be recognized as your father.””

I looked at the signature again.

“So this…”

I held up the paper.

“This is from Daniel?””

“Yes.””

“What does it say?””

Mark hesitated.

“It says that if anything happened to him, you would be protected.””

“By who?””

He looked at me.

“Me.””

The answer was quiet.

“But why you?””

Mark swallowed.

“Because Daniel knew me.””

“How?””

Mark looked toward the photograph.

“We were friends.””

My eyes narrowed.

“You were friends?””

“Yes.””

“How did I not know any of this?””

“Because Richard made sure nobody talked about it.””

The anger inside me grew.

“He erased him.””

Mark nodded.

“He erased the truth.””

Elena stepped closer.

“Richard wanted everyone to believe Daniel was just a mistake from my past.””

My chest hurt.

“A mistake?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice became stronger.

“Daniel was the best thing that ever happened to me.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“And losing him almost destroyed me.””

I looked at Mark.

“And you?””

He looked away.

“I made a promise.””

“To Daniel.””

“Yes.””

“What promise?””

Mark’s fingers touched the box.

“He knew he might not survive.””

The room became silent.

“He asked me to protect you.””

My throat tightened.

“And you did.””

Mark looked at me.

“Yes.””

“You raised me because he asked you to.””

His expression broke.

“No.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“I raised you because I loved you.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

Mark continued.

“The promise gave me a reason to stay.””

His voice trembled.

“But you became my reason.””

I looked away.

Because hearing that hurt.

Because it made me remember the aisle.

The moment I removed his arm.

The moment I chose someone else.

“I’m sorry.””

Mark shook his head.

“You don’t have to apologize for wanting answers.””

“But I hurt you.””

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

He looked at me.

“You did.””

My eyes filled.

“But I also knew you were searching for something I couldn’t give you.””

“What?””

“The truth.””

I looked down.

The paper in my hand suddenly felt heavier.

“So Daniel survived.””

“Yes.””

“For how long?””

Mark hesitated.

“Four days.””

Four days.

A person.

A life.

A father I never knew.

Four days.

“What happened?””

Mark looked at Elena.

She closed her eyes.

“I went to see him.””

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“He couldn’t speak much.””

She took a shaky breath.

“But he knew about you.””

My heart broke.

“What did he say?””

Elena looked at me.

“He asked if you were okay.””

I covered my mouth.

“Not about himself?””

She shook her head.

“Never.””

That was the kind of man I wished I had known.

Not Richard.

Not the man who counted flights and meals.

Daniel.

The man who, even dying, asked about me.

“Then how did he die?””

No one answered.

And suddenly I understood.

That was the secret.

Not the accident.

Not the paperwork.

The death.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

Mark stood.

“Ava…”

“No.””

My voice was firm.

“I’m done with half-truths.””

He looked at the floor.

“Daniel died because someone disconnected his life support.””

The room stopped.

I felt like I had been pushed underwater.

“What?””

Elena started crying.

“It was supposed to be temporary.””

My eyes widened.

“What was?””

“The machine.””

Mark continued.

“Daniel was recovering. Slowly.””

“Then why would anyone turn it off?””

Silence.

Then Mark said:

“Because someone wanted him gone.””

My hands went cold.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

But then my phone rang.

Not a message.

A call.

The screen showed the name.

Richard.

I stared at it.

After everything.

After the lies.

After the invoice.

After the secrets.

He was calling me.

Mark looked at the phone.

“Don’t answer.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

His face changed.

Because he knew something.

Something worse.

“Because if he’s calling now…”

The phone kept ringing.

“…it means he knows Elena is here.””

I looked at my mother.

Her face went pale.

“How?””

Mark whispered:

“Because the only person who could have told him…”

He stopped.

My heart sank.

“Who?””

Mark slowly turned.

Toward the entrance of the wedding hall.

A shadow stood outside the glass doors.

Watching us.

A person who had been there the entire time.

A person holding a folder.

A person who had access to my private wedding records.

Mark whispered the name.

“Richard’s lawyer.””

The doors opened.

The stranger walked inside.

And the first words out of his mouth made my blood run cold.

“Miss Ava, your father asked me to deliver something.””

He placed the folder on the table.

“Proof that Mark lied to you.””

He opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Not of Daniel.

Not of my mother.

Of Mark.

Holding me as a baby.

Standing outside a hospital.

And beneath the picture was a date.

The day before Daniel died.

The day before my mother said everything changed.

The lawyer looked at me.

“And you should know…”

He paused.

“Your father didn’t disappear from your life.””

May you like

He looked at Mark.

“Someone made sure he did.””
