Chapter 8: The Lie Hidden In The Hospital Records
The folder landed on the table with a quiet sound.
Too quiet.
After everything I had learned that night, I expected the truth to arrive like thunder.
Instead, it came as paper.
Ink.
Photographs.
Documents.
Things that looked ordinary but had the power to destroy a lifetime.
The lawyer stood across from us, calm and emotionless.
He looked like someone delivering bad news at a business meeting.
Not someone standing inside a wedding hall where a daughter had just discovered her entire childhood was built on secrets.
“My name is Thomas Reed,” he said.
Nobody responded.
His eyes moved toward Mark.
“Mr. Collins.””
Mark’s face hardened.
“Leave.””
Thomas didn’t move.
“I was instructed to give Ava these documents.””
“You’ve done that.””
“No.””
He opened the folder.
“Not yet.””
I stepped forward.
“Give them to me.””
Mark looked at me.
“Ava—”
“No.””
My voice surprised even myself.
“I need to see.””
Thomas handed me the first page.
It was a hospital record.
My eyes moved quickly.
Patient name.
Daniel Carter.
Admission date.
The same night as the accident.
Then I saw something.
A line highlighted near the bottom.
*Emergency contact: Mark Collins.*
I looked up.
“Why were you his emergency contact?””
Mark didn’t answer.
Thomas did.
“Because Mr. Collins was more involved in your mother’s life than he ever admitted.””
I looked at Mark.
“Is that true?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
He looked away.
“Because it wasn’t about me.””
That answer made me angry.
“Everything keeps being about protecting me.””
I held up the document.
“But everyone keeps forgetting I’m a person.””
Mark closed his eyes.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice cracked.
“You all made choices for me.””
Elena stepped closer.
“Ava…”
I turned toward her.
“And you did too.””
She stopped.
“I know.””
That was the hardest part.
Nobody defended themselves.
Nobody argued.
They all looked guilty.
Thomas watched silently.
Almost enjoying the discomfort.
I hated that.
“What else is in there?””
He opened another document.
“This is a statement.””
“From who?””
He hesitated.
“Your father.””
My heart tightened.
“Richard?””
Thomas nodded.
“Submitted years ago.””
I grabbed it.
The first line made my stomach turn.
*I believe Mark Collins has manipulated my daughter’s identity for personal reasons.*
I kept reading.
Richard claimed Mark had hidden information.
Claimed Mark had interfered.
Claimed Mark had prevented him from being involved in my life.
I looked at Mark.
“Is any of this true?””
He didn’t answer.
That scared me.
“Dad.””
He looked at me.
“Some of it.””
My heart sank.
“What?””
Mark sat down.
“I did keep things from you.””
The room went silent.
“Why?””
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“Of losing you.””
The answer was honest.
But it didn’t make it easier.
I shook my head.
“You should have trusted me.””
“I should have.””
The simplicity hurt.
Thomas crossed his arms.
“This is exactly the problem.””
I turned toward him.
“What problem?””
“The problem where Mr. Collins thinks love gives him the right to decide what someone deserves to know.””
Mark looked at him.
“And Richard thinks money gives him that right.””
Thomas’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I noticed.
A reaction.
A defensive one.
I looked at him.
“You work for Richard.””
“Yes.””
“Why are you here?””
He looked at the documents.
“Because he wants you to understand the truth.””
I almost laughed.
“Richard wants me to understand the truth?””
“Yes.””
“The same man who gave me an invoice for attending my wedding?””
Thomas remained calm.
“That was poorly handled.””
“Poorly handled?””
I stepped closer.
“He charged me for being my father.””
Thomas said nothing.
Because there was no defense.
I looked back at the folder.
The photograph was still there.
The one of Mark holding me outside the hospital.
I picked it up.
“Why is this important?””
Thomas looked at it.
“Because of the date.””
I looked.
The date was printed beneath the image.
The day before Daniel died.
“So?””
Thomas leaned forward.
“Look closely.””
I did.
And then I saw it.
Something I had missed.
A hospital bracelet around my wrist.
Not mine.
A baby’s bracelet.
My baby bracelet.
I looked at Elena.
“What is this?””
Her face changed.
“Ava…”
“What happened that day?””
No one answered.
I turned to Mark.
“Why were you at the hospital with me?””
His hands tightened.
“Because you were sick.””
“When?””
“After Daniel’s accident.””
I frowned.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
Mark looked down.
“Daniel wasn’t the only one hurt.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
He took a deep breath.
“You were there.””
The room went silent.
“I was six months old.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Elena covered her mouth.
“Richard.””
The name came out like a whisper.
I looked at her.
“What did he do?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know everything.””
“Then what do you know?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“He came to the hospital after the accident.””
“Why?””
“To see Daniel.””
“And me?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
I stared.
“Why?””
Nobody answered.
Then Mark finally said:
“Because Richard was trying to prove something.””
“What?””
“That Daniel was your father.””
I frowned.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
Mark looked at the photograph.
“Richard knew.””
“Knew what?””
“That you weren’t his daughter.””
The room became silent.
Again.
The same truth.
Coming back.
But this time with a darker meaning.
“He knew.””
“Yes.””
“Then why did he marry my mother?””
Mark looked at Elena.
“Because he believed he could erase Daniel.””
I felt sick.
Thomas interrupted.
“There is more.””
I turned.
“What?””
He pulled out another document.
“This one was found in Richard’s personal files.””
My hands went cold.
“Found?””
Thomas ignored the question.
“It is a medical report.””
I took it.
The top line made my breath stop.
*DNA PATERNITY TEST RESULTS*
My eyes moved down.
I expected to see Richard’s name.
I expected another lie.
But I didn’t.
The report was between:
Daniel Carter.
And me.
My hands started shaking.
“What is this?””
Elena whispered:
“The proof.””
I looked at Mark.
He nodded.
“Your mother wanted to prove Daniel was your father.””
I read the result.
Positive.
The room blurred.
Daniel.
The man I never met.
The man who had loved me before I was born.
The man Richard spent years pretending didn’t matter.
He was my father.
But then I saw something else.
A second signature.
A witness signature.
I froze.
Because I knew the handwriting.
I had seen it my entire life.
The signature belonged to Mark.
I looked up slowly.
“You signed this.””
Mark didn’t deny it.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel asked me to.””
I stepped back.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“You knew Daniel was my father.””
“Yes.””
“You knew Richard wasn’t.””
“Yes.””
The anger came back.
Not because Mark lied.
Because I suddenly realized how much truth he had carried alone.
“You let me call him my father.””
Mark’s eyes filled.
“I let you believe what would hurt you the least.””
“That wasn’t your choice.””
“No.””
He nodded.
“It wasn’t.””
The honesty broke through my anger.
Before I could respond, Thomas’s phone rang.
He answered quickly.
“Yes?””
A pause.
His expression changed.
“What?””
Everyone noticed.
Thomas looked at me.
Then at Mark.
Then at Elena.
“What happened?”” I asked.
He slowly lowered the phone.
“Richard knows Elena is here.””
Elena went pale.
“How?””
Thomas swallowed.
“He said he expected this.””
Mark stood.
“Expected what?””
Thomas looked at him.
“He said the box would be opened tonight.””
My stomach tightened.
“The box?””
Thomas nodded.
Then he said something that made Mark’s face lose all color.
“Richard said the box contains the one thing that can destroy him.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
I looked at the wooden box sitting on the table.
The box that had followed me my entire life.
The box that held my mother’s letters.
My childhood.
My father’s proof.
And maybe the reason Richard had returned.
Slowly, I reached for it.
Mark grabbed my hand.
“Ava.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
His voice shook.
“Whatever is inside…”
He paused.
“…it’s the reason your mother ran.””
I stared at the box.
Then at Elena.
Then at Mark.
The lock was already open.
But before I lifted the lid completely, my phone buzzed one final time.
A message from Richard.

Only six words.
*Ask Mark who really saved you.*
