Chapter 6: The Truth My Father Buried

For ten years, I had carried the memory of my mother’s death like a scar.

A painful thing.

A permanent thing.

Something I never questioned because everyone around me agreed on the same story.

My mother died in a car accident.

My father survived.

The funeral happened.

Life moved forward.

That was the version of reality I had been given.

And now the man standing in front of me was telling me everything I believed was a lie.

My father.

Thomas Carter.

Alive.

Standing in the same room where I had just discovered my wife had been hiding from him.

I moved in front of Lily without thinking.

My body knew what to do before my mind did.

Protect her.

Thomas noticed.

A small smile appeared on his face.

“You always did that.””

I stared at him.

“Did what?””

“Put yourself between danger and the people you love.””

His voice was calm.

Almost proud.

That made it worse.

“You don’t get to talk about love.””

His expression changed slightly.

Not anger.

Something colder.

Disappointment.

“You really believe I’m the villain.””

I looked at the files around us.

The photographs.

The secrets.

The lies.

“I don’t have to believe it.””

I pointed at him.

“You’re standing here after pretending to be dead for ten years.””

Thomas sighed.

“Your emotions are making this difficult.””

Officer Reed stepped forward.

“Mr. Carter, I’m going to need you to put your hands where I can see them.””

My father looked at him.

Then laughed softly.

“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.””

“I know enough.””

“No.””

Thomas looked around the storage room.

“You know pieces.””

His eyes landed on Emily.

“She showed you what she wanted you to see.””

Emily’s face hardened.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Thomas looked at her.

“You always were good at manipulating people.””

I saw something flash across Emily’s face.

Pain.

Not fear.

Pain.

“After everything you did…”

Thomas interrupted.

“Everything I did?””

He shook his head.

“You still don’t understand why I made those choices.””

I hated how calm he was.

How he stood there like he was explaining a business decision.

Not destroying lives.

“You disappeared,” I said.

“Yes.””

“You let me think you were dead.””

“Yes.””

“You let me bury you.””

His eyes softened.

“I had no choice.””

I almost laughed.

“No choice?””

I stepped closer.

“You had ten years to tell me the truth.””

“I was protecting you.””

“From what?””

Thomas looked at Lily.

And I immediately knew.

The answer involved her.

“No.””

My voice became low.

“Do not look at my daughter.””

Thomas looked back at me.

“Daniel, you need to understand something.””

“I don’t need anything from you.””

“You have spent your entire life thinking you were ordinary.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“You think your mother’s death, my disappearance, Emily’s actions… they were random events.””

He walked closer.

“They weren’t.””

Officer Reed raised his hand.

“Stop moving.””

Thomas ignored him.

“They all connect.””

Emily stepped forward.

“Daniel, he’s trying to confuse you.””

Thomas smiled.

“Am I?””

He looked at her.

“Tell him.””

Emily said nothing.

“Tell him why you really stayed away.””

Her silence was enough.

I looked at my wife.

“Emily?””

She closed her eyes.

“Daniel…”

“Tell me.””

She swallowed.

“I found out about Lily.””

My heart dropped.

“What about Lily?””

Thomas answered for her.

“She isn’t just your daughter.””

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

Emily moved closer.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“No more secrets.””

Lily started crying quietly.

I immediately softened.

I knelt beside her.

“Hey. Hey, sweetheart.””

She looked at me.

“Are you fighting?””

I forced myself to breathe.

“No.””

“Are you mad at Mommy?””

I looked at Emily.

Then at my daughter.

“No.””

Lily touched my face.

“Mommy said people who hide secrets are usually scared.””

That sentence silenced everyone.

Thomas looked at her.

Almost sadly.

“She’s smarter than you think.””

I stood.

“Enough.””

I looked at Emily.

“Tell me the truth.””

She nodded slowly.

“We need to leave first.””

“What?””

“We can’t talk here.””

Thomas smiled.

“You still think you can run.””

Emily turned toward him.

“You don’t scare me anymore.””

His expression changed.

For the first time, I saw anger.

Real anger.

“You should be.””

Before anyone could react, the lights went out.

The room went completely dark.

Lily screamed.

I grabbed her instantly.

“Everyone stay where you are!””

A sound echoed.

A door opening.

Then footsteps.

Fast.

Officer Reed’s flashlight turned on.

“Where is he?””

Nobody answered.

When the emergency lights came back, Thomas was gone.

The back exit door was swinging.

Officer Reed ran after him.

I stayed with Lily.

But Emily was staring at the floor.

“What?””

She didn’t answer.

“What is it?””

She pointed.

A small envelope.

It hadn’t been there before.

My name was written on it.

Again.

*DANIEL*

My hands felt numb as I picked it up.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph from twenty-eight years ago.

My mother.

My father.

And another child.

A little boy.

About five years old.

I looked closer.

The child had my father’s eyes.

But he wasn’t me.

On the back of the photo was one sentence.

*Your brother survived.*

I looked at Emily.

She was crying.

“You knew?””

She nodded.

“Not everything.””

“What did you know?””

She wiped her tears.

“Your father had another family.””

The room felt like it was closing around me.

“No.””

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“My father loved my mother.””

Emily looked away.

“That’s what he wanted you to believe.””

My phone buzzed.

Another message.

I almost didn’t want to open it.

But I did.

A video.

From an unknown number.

I pressed play.

The screen showed a hospital room.

A younger version of my father stood beside a bed.

On the bed was my mother.

Alive.

Talking.

My hands started shaking.

Because I had never seen this footage.

My mother looked terrified.

“Thomas, you can’t do this.””

My father’s younger voice replied:

“I have no choice.””

“You’re destroying our family.””

“I’m saving our family.””

My mother looked toward the camera.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“If anything happens to me, Daniel needs to know the truth.””

The video glitched.

Then my father’s voice came through.

Cold.

“You were never supposed to have another child.””

The screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

I stared at the phone.

Another child.

A brother.

A hidden past.

A mother who knew she was in danger.

And a father who had spent years controlling the story.

I looked at Emily.

“Who is my brother?””

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“His name is Lucas.””

My stomach tightened.

“Where is he?””

Emily looked at the door where my father had disappeared.

“He’s the reason Thomas came back.””

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

“What does that mean?””

Emily looked at Lily.

Then at me.

“Daniel…”

Her voice broke.

“Lucas isn’t missing.””

I waited.

She took a breath.

“He has been with your father this entire time.””

A terrible silence followed.

Then my phone received one final message.

A photo appeared.

It showed a man standing beside Thomas.

A grown man.

Older than me.

Same eyes.

Same face shape.

My brother.

Under the photo was a message.

*Meet your family.*

May you like

And beneath it:

*Or lose them forever.*
